The technique of veneered marquetry had its inspiration in 16th century Florence. Marquetry elaborated upon Florentine techniques of inlaying solid marble slabs with designs formed of fitted marbles, jaspers and semi-precious stones. This work, called opere di commessi, has medieval parallels in Central Italian "Cosmati"-work of inlaid marble floors, altars and columns. The technique is known in English as pietra dura, for the "hardstones" used: onyx, jasper, cornelian, lapis lazuli and colored marbles. In Florence, the Chapel of the Medici at San Lorenzo is completely covered in a colored marble facing using this demanding jig-sawn technique. Techniques of wood marquetry were developed in Antwerp and other Flemish centers of luxury cabinet-making during the early 16th century. The craft was imported full-blown to France after the mid-seventeenth century, to create furniture of unprecedented luxury being made at the royal manufactory of the Gobelins, charged with providing furnishings to decorate Versailles and the other royal residences of Louis XIV. Early masters of French marquetry were the Fleming Pierre Golle and his son-in-law, André-Charles Boulle, who founded a dynasty of royal and Parisian cabinet-makers (ébénistes) and gave his name to a technique of marquetry employing brass with pewter in arabesque or intricately foliate designs. Edwards & Roberts The firm Edwards & Roberts was one of the best English antique furniture cabinet makers of the second half of the eighteenth century. The company was founded in 1845 and by 1854 was trading as ‘Edwards & Roberts’, 21 Wardour Street, Antique and Modern Cabinet...

Card Table in the Rococo Taste
By Charles A. Baudoine
Located in New York, NY
RECORDED: cf. Anna Tobin D’Ambrosio, ed., Masterpieces of American Furniture from the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute (Syracuse University Press, Utica, New York, 1999), pp. 85, 86, 87 illus. the Munson-Williams-Proctor tables // cf. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 19th Century America–Furniture and Other Decorative Arts (1970), exhib. cat., [n.p.] no.133 This table is identical to a pair of card tables bearing the stenciled label of Charles A. Baudouine of 335 Broadway, New York, which were acquired by James and Helen Munson Williams of Utica, New York, in May 1852 for their home, Fountain Elms, which is where they remain today as part of the Munson-Williams-Proctor Art Institute collection. The Williams tables were billed as “1 Rosewood Multiform Table” at $160 for the pair, and they were indeed “multiform” in that they could be used separately and folded as a pair of console tables, opened as a pair of card tables, or joined together as a center table. The present table varies essentially in the fact that it does not include the mechanism that would have allowed it to be attached to another to form a center table. Of French descent, Baudouine was born in New York in 1808. He made his debut as a cabinetmaker in the New York directory of 1829/30, where he is listed at 508 Pearl Street. By 1839/40 he relocated to Broadway, where he remained in business at various addresses until about 1854. A sense of the scale of Baudouine’s operation is given by German immigrant cabinetmaker Ernest Hagen...

Antique and Vintage Card Tables and Tea Tables

Today, the phrase “card tables” might evoke the image of common plastic tables covered in felt, but historically these tables were statement pieces that invited merriment and were made of mahogany, walnut or other fine woods. Today, antique and vintage card tables and tea tables can enliven a space and encourage spirited competition in your home.

Card tables originated in England in the late 17th century, and during this time, as well as the 18th century, game tables in general became quite popular. We refer to early versions of card tables as antique Regency card tables because the Prince of Wales ruled England during the period and his official title was Regent. Back then, these furnishings were typically small, rectangular tables outfitted with hinged tops so that they could be opened to reveal a playing surface. Ornamental flourishes of the era might have included an integration of fine velvet or needlepoint as lining for the table’s surface. For furniture makers, wide adoption of a dense woven green material called baize for table covering — similar to felt but stronger — occurred during the early 1700s.

Tea became widely affordable during the early 1800s in England, and tea time exploded in popularity and involved large tea sets — especially during the Victorian era — as well as small, well-crafted tea tables. Your beverage was paired with petite baked goods, and the tea table would be home to teacups, saucers, a milk pot and other items. While tea tables are similar in design to card tables, the focus is more on presentation. Georgian card tables and tea tablesfurniture made during the reign of England’s three Georges — were especially ornate. Some featured intricately carved design elements on each side and stood on elegantly curved legs. After all, tea time became a sacred ritual that society women dressed up for. It was a time to pause, reflect and sip a comforting beverage.

When no guests were visiting to enjoy tea or play games, owners could fold down both card tables and tea tables to their smaller size and tuck them away into a corner of the room.

Antique and vintage card tables and tea tables can make a lovely addition to any living room, entertainment room or game room. Find yours on 1stDibs.
