Early Franco Albini for Knoll Model '80' Desk

About the Item

Franco Albini for Knoll, model 80, glass, lacquered wood, lacquered steel, Italy, 1949 Franco Albini’s model 80 desk combines glass, steel and wood which resulted in a minimalistic balance. The desk features Albini’s design philosophy and minimalist aesthetic, the design derives its appeal through simplicity of form and celebration of material, without extraneous ornamentation. This model is an early edition of the model 80 design. Franco Albini (1905-1977) was an Italian architect and designer. He went to study architecture at the Politecnico in Milan and later worked under Gio Ponti. In his work, he combined modern Italian aesthetics with traditional craftsmanship. He started about to use materials that were readily available. Albini designed many iconic pieces including a radio, rocking chair and modular bookcases and over the course of his career worked with many manufacturers such as Knoll, Cassina, Arteluce and Poggi. Knoll International was founded in New York by the 26 year old German Hans Knoll (1914-1955) in 1938. Hans' father, Walter Knoll was a true modernist and furniture manufacturer who had a reputation for quality. When Hans Knoll died at a young age his wife Florence Knoll took over and under her influence the company flourished and created its best designs. She designed and led the company where she cooperated with talented designers such as Eero Saarinen, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Richard Schultz and Harry Bertoia. Please note that this item is in good, used condition. The frame and lacquered wood show some small losses of lacquer on several places. Restoration can be done before shipping by our experienced craftspeople in our own in-house restoration atelier. Ernest H. Igl for Bayer AG 'Hadi' Desk
By Ernest Igl
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Ernest Igl for Bayer AG, 'Hadi' desk, polyurethane, Germany, 1970s This design by Ernest Igl truly resembles the ethos of the seventies, featuring the commonly used material of that time: polyurethane. Ernest Igl strived for the creation of a desk that focused on functionality combined with an aesthetically pleasing design for daily use. This is discernible in the playful composition of curved lines and round shapes executed in the whole construction. On the left side, three drawers are situated hidden perfectly in the column of the design. At the right side there is a storage compartment placed. Taking every stylistic realization into account, this writing desk feels retro, without clashing with contemporary interiors. Ernest Hofmann...
