18th C. English Architect's Table w/Unique Legs, Expanding Top, & Candle Shelves

An English expandable architect's table with candle stands from the 18th century. This antique table from England would have originally been used as an architects work desk, complete with a pair of small shelves that pull out from either side of that table, that would have supported candles for lighting. The rectangular-shaped top rests atop an apron that houses a faux-drawer with single brass handle, that when pulled, reveals an extension to the table. This slide out wood top is lined with leather, creating an additional writing pad surface. The leather top an also be slid back under the main top, keep legs out, granting access to storage within (see images for more details on this). Carved bracket accents adorn the underside of the skirt against each of the squared outer legs, which partially wrap the outer edges of the nicely-turned inner legs (which are slightly longer and terminate into petite caster feet). Needless to say, this piece has very interesting legs! A curvy x-style stretcher bar braces the legs under the bottom center for additional support. Note that the pull out leather top adds an additional 28" x 13" table top work space, with a floor clearance underneath of 24". Where to begin, this desk has been on a journey, when I first received the piece it looked like it had been French polished and waxed around 20 times, it had a very clumpy sticky finish, my restorers have stripped back all that horrible guck, they have then lightly stained and French polished it the correct way which has kept all the period patina and simply made it golden, The leather top and writing slope top has been replaced with fully aniline natural cattle hide leather that was plain, I’ve then had my leather polishers dye it this gorgeous whisky brown colour. Made by the renowned English furniture maker Donald Ross, this desk is a demonstration of some of his finest work.
The desk is decorated with the iconic dotted parquetry trellis, and the centre is inset with a brown leather panel. Gold, debossed detailing adorns the border of the leather panel, its soft texture providing a smooth surface on which to write. An ormolu border frames the desk table top, the four edges mounted with motifs of male bearded masks among acanthus leaves.
Below are two lockable drawers, each one decorated in a similar manner to the desk table top. The pair of storage compartments are separated by a central ormolu mount cast in the form of flowing acanthus leaves and foliage garlands.
Four tapering legs support the desk, each one terminating in socket castors marked ‘JC’. Ross’ masterpiece is also labelled with a brass label ‘KG 8913’.
In the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London is a bedside table by Donald Ross of a very similar design to the desk in Mayfair Gallery...

Baldock's business seems to have largely involved trading in foreign items and between 1832-7 he was the purveyor of earthenware and glass to William IV and later purveyor of china to Queen Victoria from 1838 until his death.
