Nara Serving Table, by Shiro Kuramata for Memphis Milano Collection

About the Item

Shiro Kuramata 1983 Service table made with the traditional technique of terrazzo in concrete conglomerate and coloured glass. Nara perfectly combines the Japanese aesthetic tradition with the principles of western design. There is no separation between construction, form, inner essence and materials. A low serving table created in 1983 by Shiro Kuramata, one of the most important Japanese designers, with its essential form Nara reformulates the archetypal idea of the “table.” The simplicity of the structure is ironically contrasted by the texture of colored patches typical of terrazzo, a composite of cement and colored glass chosen for the cladding of the surfaces. In its materials, Nara recoups and references a very old traditional technique: “terrazzo.” Created in ancient Greece as a type of flooring composed of marble, granite or glass mixed with cement, terrazzo reached its apex of splendor in Venice in the 1500s. In our time, Shiro Kuramata has reinterpreted this material for Memphis.
