About the Item

Pair of Rocchetto side tables, designed by Ettore Sottsass and manufactured by Poltronova in 1964. Made of lacquered walnut wood. Excellent vintage condition. Ettore Sottsass Jr., a highly talented architect and designer, was born into a family of architects and honed his skills at Turin's Polytechnic Institute. He embarked on his career in Milan, where he became captivated by industrial design and interior design. A meticulous study of color, expressive ceramics, and jewelry characterizes Sottsass's work. Breaking away from the prevailing Rationalist movement, Sottsass forged his unique design path, creating diverse and emotionally charged objects. Sottsass achieved great acclaim and influence through his collaborations with institutions such as Triennale di Milano and Olivetti. Notably, his designs for Olivetti, including iconic typewriters like Praxis 48, Lettera 36, and Valentine, have become legendary in the annals of design. He even designed Elea 9003, the first Italian computer, which earned him a prestigious Compasso d'Oro award in 1959. Sottsass's profound research, exploration of avant-garde movements, and experimentation with conceptual art made him a trailblazing figure in '60s design in Italy and Europe. Additionally, Sottsass made a mark with his experimental furniture, including unique pieces, and his participation in the groundbreaking 1972 exhibition at MoMA in New York called Italy—the New Domestic Landscape. In the early 1980s, he founded the influential Memphis group, which focused on producing innovative objects and furniture. He also established his practice, Sottsass Associati, which delved into architecture and design. Throughout his illustrious career, Sottsass valued his partnerships and friendships with artists and critics, as they played a vital role in his success. In the 1990s, Sottsass shifted his focus to architecture, mainly designing homes and urban spaces. His remarkable accomplishments have garnered him numerous accolades and awards, such as the prestigious Chevalier de l'ordre des arts et des lettres title in France (1992) and honorary degrees from esteemed institutions like Rhode Island School of Design (1993) and the Royal College of Art in London (1996). Sottsass's enduring legacy lives on in his groundbreaking designs that inspire and captivate.
