About the Item

The model was designed in 1931–32 for the Paimio Sanatorium, Finland. Originally created for the Paimio Sanatorium in Finland, the table reflects Aalto's commitment to human-centered design and his pioneering work with bentwood techniques. The upturned edges of the shelves not only contribute to the table's distinctive aesthetic but also serve a practical purpose by keeping items securely in place. This design showcases Aalto's signature fluid curves and his mastery in manipulating wood to achieve both strength and visual lightness. Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) was a Finnish architect and designer renowned for his pioneering contributions to modern architecture and furniture design. Blending functionality with organic forms, he championed human-centred design and natural materials, particularly wood. Aalto’s work includes iconic buildings, furniture, and lighting, many produced by Artek, the company he co-founded in 1935. His designs remain influential for their warmth, innovation, and timeless appeal.
