19th Century French Oil on Canvas Painting, "In the Sheepfold", Signed Lecler

About the Item

Signed by the artist in the lower left corner (“Lecler”), this oil on canvas painting is entitled In the Sheepfold. A typical day in the life of a farmer dressed in blue with a gold hat, the agriculteur can be seen tending to a hay feeder. Behind the man is a flock of 15 sheep, mostly depicted with tan wool and white faces and ears, with the exception of a small all-white lamb. Some of the livestock is grazing from the feeders, while four of them (including the lamb) are gathered near a large water trough. A pair of chickens can be spotted amongst the herd, including a brown rooster with red comb standing on the ground that is covered with golden straw that have been displaced from the feeders. Interestingly, Lecler used a brush stroke technique known as impasto on the straw lining the ground and to a lesser extent, some of the sheep wool. Impasto is a painting technique where the paint is applied thicker than usual, making the paint appear as if it is coming out of the canvas. The rest of the painting has lighter brush strokes, which provides a nice juxtaposition from the areas textured by the impasto.

Repaired: Old repairs to both the frame and canvas. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Strong antique condition with a small repair to the canvas and some old restoration to the giltwood frame. Minor age separations, losses, and craquelure to the frame as well. The frame is rigged for hanging. Signed in the lower left “Lecler”.

Large 18th Century French Oil on Canvas Painting Depicting a Hunt Scene

This large (110 inches high) oil on canvas painting depicts a successful hunter, with his felled game displayed near his retriever dogs. Our hunter is leaning against a stone pedestal, clad in blue coat and pants with his rifle beneath his right hand. The man is wearing a gold cap with red fabric attached to it and has a sword on his left hip. Three retriever dogs stand to the hunter’s left, while a fourth sits in front of him (the man appears to be motioning to this dog with his left hand). An orange terra cotta vase adorned with spiral fluting sits on top of a molded plinth at the top of the pedestal. Ivy has begun to wrap around the vase, which also is festooned with green drapery. On a ledge at the base of the pedestal is the felled game: a rabbit and three birds. The hunting display is surrounded by numerous trees and shrubbery. Mountains and a lake can be seen in the background, beneath a blue sky with pink and orange clouds and birds flying. This 19th century impressionist painting was crafted in France, circa 1890. Set in a carved giltwood frame, the artwork painted on canvas, illustrates a picturesque, countryside landscape scene with a forest, barn, chickens, ducks, and a pond in the foreground. The oil on canvas is signed on the back in the lower left corner by the artist, Eugene Galien-Laloue (see last picture). The artwork is in excellent condition with rich, realistic colors; it would make a lovely addition to a study, den, or living room. We thank Mr. Noé Willer for confirming the authenticity of this work, which appears in his archives of the artist. Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854-1941) was a French artist of French-Italian parents. He was a popularizer of landscape and street scenes, usually those illustrating autumn or winter settings. His paintings of the early 1900s accurately represent the era in which he lived: a happy, bustling Paris during la Belle Époque. His paintings regularly include horse-drawn carriages, trolley cars and its first omnibuses. Galien-Laloue's works are valued not only for their contribution to 20th century art, but for the actual historical content which they document.
