Hammer, Stick, Same thang, 2017 is an edition that is based off an original painting. In this work, Awol has appropriated the iconic arm & hammer image and logo which is both localized and ubiquitous and appears across the country in interchangeable locales, signifying a variety of ethnicities and communities. Stripping the logo of its relationship to the ancient mythologies and products and the surrounding urban landscapes, it becomes both a meditation on post-Warholian production, and a response to color theory recalling Joseph Albers' pedagogical exercises that influenced Erizku when he was a student at Cooper Union. The original artwork was painted on sheets of OSB instead of canvas and teeters on the divide between the studio and the street responding to different moments in art history, as well as the constantly evolving surface of the city.
Awol Erizku (b. 1988, Addis Ababa) is a conceptual artist who received his B.A. from Cooper Union in 2010 and his M.F.A from Yale in 2014. He has exhibited recently at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York. He has lectured in conjunction with Carrie Mae Weems at The Guggenheim, New York. Recent solo exhibitions include Menace II Society at Night Gallery, Los Angeles, Make America Great Again at Ben Brown Fine Arts, London, New Flower Images of the reclining Venus at The FLAG Art Foundation, New York and Bad II the Bone presented at nomadic exhibition venue, Duchamp Detox Clinic, by Night Gallery. Erizku lives and works in Los Angeles.

David Byrne, legendary frontman of American band The Talking Heads and author of How Music Works, was born in Dumbarton, Scotland in 1952. Byrne is a multi-intrumentalist most known for his high-energy performances and distinctive, wide-ranging voice. He formed The Talking Heads with fellow RISD student, Chris Frantz, and Frantz's girlfriend, Tina Weymouth, in 1975 while living in New York City. In 1990 he founded the world music record label Luaka Bop, which released music from artists including Os Mutantes, Tom Ze, and Zap Mama.
Byrne's solo career has been broad and multi-disciplinary. Since the 1990s, Byrne has exhibited his visual artwork at numerous galleries including Pace/MacGill Gallery in New York City. In 2006 he released Arboretum, a collection of his philosophical drawings, published by McSweeney's. Byrne's drawings are what he calls "mental maps of imaginary territory." Says Byrne, "if you can draw a relationship, it can exist... the world keeps opening up, unfolding, and just when we expect it to be closed—to be a sealed sensible box—it shows us something completely surprising." In 2010, Byrne exhibited his piece "Guitar Pedals...

This work is part of the Vera List Anniversary Print Portfolio, created in recognition of the exceptional legacy of philanthropist Vera List. It was the generosity of Vera and her husband Albert that enabled the founding of the Vera List Art Project at Lincoln Center in 1962, MIT's List Arts Center in 1982, and the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School in 1992, among others. These institutions joined forces with Artspace and six internationally renowned artists to produce this print portfolio.
This print by Fred Wilson is comprised of a mashup of flags of Caribbean nations, presenting an idea about the relationships among the people of these cultures.
Fred Wilson is a conceptual artist of African-American and Caribbean descent who's primarily known for rearranging art and artifacts in museum collections to reveal the inherent racism and gender politics that are often overlooked. First gaining notoriety in the early '90s with the exhibition Mining the Museum, in which he placed a whipping post from pre-Civil War America in a gallery and surrounded it with four ornate chairs...

Passion Over Reason
By General Idea
Located in Toronto, Ontario
In 1967, General Idea was founded in Toronto by AA Bronson (b. 1946), Felix Partz (1945-1994), and Jorge Zontal (1944-1994). Over 25 years, they made a significant contribution to postmodern and conceptual art in Canada and beyond.
The group was both prolific and multi-disciplinary long before it became de rigueur. They use photography, sculpture, painting, mail art, video, installation, multiples, and performance.
With their subversive approach and interest in parody and appropriation, General Idea addressed a broad range of social (and art-world) issues such as the cult of the artist, mass media, queer identity, and consumerism.
Thematic continuity was a key element in General Idea's work. Early on they introduced talismans or logos that they would revisit and re-envision, including skulls, ziggurats, and poodles.
