About the Item

This elegant antique tapestry was created in Aubusson France circa 1780, and was probably part of a wall boiseries. Set in the original carved oak frame with decorative recessed corners, the large handwoven tapestry features King Louis XIII of France discussing with his Prime minister, Cardinal Richelieu. The tapestry is in excellent condition with rich colors and wonderful details including the colorful floral border. Decorate a wall or a mantel with this wonderful and impressive piece of art. A true one of a kind! Louis XIII (1601-1643) was King of France from 1610-1643 and King of Navarre (as Louis II) from 1610-1620, when the crown of Navarre was merged with the French crown. Shortly before his ninth birthday, Louis became king of France and Navarre after his father Henry IV was assassinated. His mother, Marie de Medicis, acted as Regent during his minority. Mismanagement of the kingdom and ceaseless political intrigues by Marie and her Italian favorites led the young king to take power in 1617 by exiling his mother and executing her followers, including Concino Concini, the most influential Italian at the French court. Cardinal Armand Jean du Plessis, Duke of Richelieu (1585-1642), commonly referred to as Cardinal Richelieu, was a French clergyman and statesman. He was consecrated as a bishop in 1607 and was appointed Foreign Secretary in 1616. Richelieu soon rose in both the Catholic Church and the French government, becoming a cardinal in 1622, and King Louis XIII's chief minister in 1624. He remained in office until his death in 1642; he was succeeded by Cardinal Mazarin, whose career he had fostered. Measures: 58.5" W x 79.5" H.

18th Century French Aubusson Pastoral Scene Tapestry Titled "Le Repas Champetre"
By David Teniers the Younger
Located in Dallas, TX
This elegant, antique tapestry was handwoven in the city of Aubusson, France, circa 1750. The iconic tapestry, "The Pastoral Meal" with foliage decor on both sides, features a joyous pastoral scene in the manner of David Teniers, with people eating and chatting around a wooden table and benches. There is also two people dancing with a flute player, and a dog asking for leftover food. The wall hanging tapestry with its original border, is in excellent condition and has a rich colors in the soft blue, beige and green palette. A new canvas backing was added for protection. The Aubusson tapestry manufacture of the 17th and 18th century managed to compete with the royal manufacture of Gobelins tapestry and the privileged position of Beauvais tapestry. Tapestry manufacture at Aubusson, in the upper valley of the Creuse in central France, may have developed from looms in isolated family workshops established by Flemings that are noted in documents from the 16th century. Typically, Aubusson tapestries depended on engravings as a design source or the full-scale cartoons from which the low-warp tapestry-weavers worked. As with Flemish and Parisian tapestries...
