This luxurious antique Edwardian pin brooch circa 1880-1917 makes an exquisite addition to your collection. Boasting three prong-set oval opals cabochons with a gorgeous blue, violet, and peach play-of-color and a green flash, and two sparking diamonds set in milgrain-topped bezels, this timeless piece exudes elegance and sophistication. The brooch presented in its original antique box, making it the perfect gift for that special someone.
The brooch measures 1.25" long and weighs a total of 3.4 grams. The center opal measures approximately 11mm long by 8mm wide. The two side opals measure approximately 8mm long by 6mm wide. The Old European cut diamonds are approx. 2.5mm in diameter. The C clasp is handmade.
About the maker:
Highly prestigious maker Charles Packer was first in a partnership with William Brady, but their partnership was dissolved in 1839 and Packer carried on as a jeweler, pearl bead and coral dealer at the same address at 78 Regent Street, London W. until 1880. From 1880 until 1917 the business traded as Charles Packer & Co and then as Charles Packer & Co Ltd until c. 1932. Charles Packer was the major London supplier of mourning costume and accessories in the second half of the 19th century (Queen Victoria's reign) and a Charles Packer jewelry set is on display at the British Museum in London. From at least the 1920s Charles Packer & Co was known to have been the official distributor for Rolex watches in London...

An early 20th century, Luckenbooth double witch's heart brooch, with one heart set with Burma rubies and the other set with old-cut diamonds, in grain settings, surmounted with a coronet, set with three, natural seed pearls, above a row of old-cut diamonds, in grain settings, with a knife edge circular surround, set with alternating rubies and old-cut diamonds, in claw settings, mounted in 14ct gold, with the grain set diamonds in silver-upon-gold. American, circa 1910.
Luckenbooth brooches are traditional Scottish love tokens. They are usually a heart shaped brooch, often with a crown or coronet above one heart, or two intertwined hearts, with similar motifs to the Claddagh ring. European Heart-shaped brooches date back to late medieval period but this design probably did not appear in Scotland before the 17th century. It became very popular in the 19th century, featuring in the ranges of Scottish manufacturing jewellers, for the Highland outfitter and tourist trades. They are typically made of silver, although gold heart brooches were made for wealthy people and may be engraved or set with stones.
The name comes from the Luckenbooths of Edinburgh. Luckenbooth is a Scots word for a lockable stall or workshop. Originating in the 15th century, they were the city's first permanent shops, situated on the Royal Mile near St. Giles Cathedral. Initially housing mainly silversmiths and goldsmiths. They were demolished in 1817.
The brooches were often given as a betrothal or wedding gift. It might have been worn as a charm, by a nursing mother to help her milk flow or be pinned to a baby’s clothing. It was also known as a witch-brooch to protect children from evil.

Pin a dazzling brooch to the lapel of your blazer-and-tee combo or add a cluster of smaller pins to your overcoat. And while brooches have their place in “mourning jewelry,” in that a mourning brooch is representative of your connection to a lost loved one, they’re widely seen as romantic and symbolic of love, so much so that a hardcore brooch enthusiast might advocate for brooches to be worn over the heart.
