40 luminous and translucent deep forest green nephrite jade beads are simply —perfectly— presented in this stunning 18" necklace. The beads measure approximately 10mm in diameter each and were individually hand-carved and hand-polished prior to the mid-1950s when China became largely industrialized. The polish on these exquisite nephrite jade beads is an older polish but not a nineteenth-century polish. The beads most likely date to the 1930s, which happens to be when the silver clasp was created as well. The clasp features gentle waves in raised relief above a hand-textured background. The tongue of the clasp has an ingenious 90-degree bend at the tip: should the clasp ever fail, this lip of metal will catch on the clasp and prevent the necklace from falling. I have here a stunning, vivid and fresh spring green 18" jade necklace composed of 58 GIA certified natural and untreated Burmese jadeite jade beads that graduate in size from 3.79mm to 8.62 mm. A gilt silver closure is bezel-set with an 8.54mm cabochon of jade that is the perfect match to the beads. The necklace dates to the Art deco era, circa 1938-1940, and the original safety chain is still attached and in perfect working order. How rare and wonderful is that little detail? These highly translucent beads are absolutely gorgeous. Nephrite jade has been woven into the weft and weave of Chinese culture for thousands of years. 2,000 years ago, when the Han Dynasty princess Dou Wan died, she was buried in a suit made of nephrite jade. Knives and axes for battle and daily work were made from it and chains were carved from single nephrite boulders; chains that would be attached to horses to pull carts. Nephrite is the toughest gemstone due to its fibrous interlocking mineralogical structure. But it's not merely tough and durable; nephrite is beautiful. Indeed, the original "imperial jade" was nephrite jade, not the jadeite we think of today. This 28" necklace was hand-carved in or around 1935 from one piece of nephrite jade. Each link was carved by hand, prior to China's industrial revolution in the 1950s so these links were painstakingly hand-carved using foot-powered grinding wheels and garnet dust. To create a necklace of such uniform links without cracking or damaging a single one in the process would have taken months if not a year or more of relentless grinding and polishing.
