This is a portrait of a German airman that was done by the artist at the start of 1919. The artwork has been created on the reverse of a document from Adlershof, a German Air Park. This exact document is from the 'Airman Replacement Department' and is a request form for replacement parts for aircrafts - it asks the writer to specify the type and number of aircrafts, the type of engine and details of its propellers.
Adlershof is a place with a long and famous history. Germany's first motorised aircraft took off from here at the beginning of the 20th century and the Wright brothers moved their company to the airfield in 1909 shortly after it was opened. In 1912 German Experimental Institute for Aviation was established and made the location it's headquarters. Indeed, pre-war it was often known as 'The cradle of German Aviation'.
During the war the War ministry used the site for extensive military production and it is particularly well known for a series of competitions between various aviation firms' fighter aircraft designs that were held in 1918 and 1919. Even after the War had ended, work continued at Adlershof with the final flight competition being held between February and May 1919 (when this portrait was created). Eventually, the signing of the Versailles Treaty ended all military aircraft work for Germany and led to the dissolution of the Luffstreikrafte in May 1920.

With a career spanning more than three decades, Robbie Cornelissen has established himself among the leading contemporary draughtsmen in Europe. His vast and irresolute creative universe demonstrates the complexity of a world dealing with new spatial concepts. Every corner of the planet may have been explored, but digital technologies have opened up an endless universe to discover, a virtual labyrinth without an exit in which one can easily get lost. His drawings often serve vertiginous perspectives out of which emerge distressing voids that refer more to metaphorical states of mind than physical spaces. Cornelissen’s works offer an exploration of these fields and are therefore often viewed as places of anxiety. They could easily be interpreted as portraits of a technophobic mind, alarmed by the speeds and heights of our advanced neoliberal societies. But for some, the volatility of these spaces is also incredibly exciting – liberating even. Cornelissen represents a world in which things are freed from the pragmatism of their usage to exist simply for the interest of their geometry. This is particularly true of architecture, the prime subject of his artistic research.
In many ways, Cornelissen’s technique is very classical. His expertise of linear perspective takes root in the heritage of Quattrocento Masters of the likes of Pietro Perugino...

Always working with graphite and charcoal, Robbie Cornelissen’s limited palette emphasises the stark sombre nature of his metaphysical drawings, The Undertow is his sixth solo exhibition at Art Mûr. At the centre of the exhibition hovers Terra Nova, a dark and desolate world parallel to our own. Robbie Cornelissen’s drawings, such as The Space of Absence and Thriller, seem to pull from the stop motion’s frames. Other images, made especially for The Undertow isolate key fragments; the cloud, mounds and timeless dwellings, Cornelissen’s signature technical interest.
In addition to his methodical approach, Cornelissen uses the written word, scrawling and erasing terms repeatedly, in English, French, and German, these fastidious markings and exact translations leave a trace and a glitch on paper and screen. Much of his existing work includes words and phrases like “tribunal,” “myself when I am real” and “the need to disappear.” Do they identify what forms, systems and sentiments that are, or could be present? Or do they warn of what is to come?
Suspended in the atmosphere of a planetary body, Cornelissen’s clouds extend down to the surface, looming over Earth and Terra Nova. But are they harmless clouds, or associated with nuclear explosions? And is that the ash, dust, pollution and detritus of these invented places, the remnants of an unsustainable society, a dream factory? Or the promise of life anew? In weather forecasting, or aeromancy, the presence of clouds can promise darkness and gloom, but they can also bring cleansing.
The ominous aura of the grid, an applied system and structure used by many, including draughtsmen, architects, urban planners, designers and artists to organise and sometimes classify information, is a recurring element in his work. The sitter for this portrait, Alfred Hardiman, was an English sculptor. Hardiman and Lyon were friends and met when they both attended the British School at Rome in the early 1920s.
Hardiman won a London County Council Scholarship to the Royal College of Art in 1912, and three years later joined the Royal Academy School. After a period as an engineer's draughtsman in the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War, Hardiman resumed his studies and in 1920 was awarded the British Prix de Rome scholarship, spending two years at the British School at Rome. There he developed his style, a blend of naturalism and classicism influenced by Roman and Etruscan art and early fifth century Greek sculpture.
Hardiman's best-known (but also most controversial) work is the Earl Haig Memorial on Whitehall in London. More universally admired are the heraldic lions flanking the main entrance to the City Hall, Norwich, a work which fully epitomises his style. He was appointed consultant sculptor to the building, having worked with one of the architects, Stephen Rowland Pierce, on the Haig Memorial. Hardiman also carved three large stone figures for the outside of the council chamber, and worked with other sculptors on the project including James Woodford and Eric Aumonier.
Hardiman was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1936 and a full Academician in 1944. He became a fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1938 and the following year received their silver medal for his statue of Haig. In 1946 he won a gold medal for his bronze fountain figure for the New Council House, College Green, Bristol, which however was never erected.
In 1918 he married Violet, daughter of Herbert Clifton White, of London, and had two daughters. He died at Stoke Poges on 17th April 1949.

James Stroudley was born in London on 17 June 1906, the son of James Stroudley, showcard and ticket writer. He studied at Clapham School of Art (1923-27) and then at the Royal College of Art (1927-30), where his teachers included Alan Gwynne-Jones and William Rothenstein. As a recipient of the first Abbey Scholarship he was able to spend three years in Italy from 1930, where he absorbed the influences of Giotto and Piero della Francesca, and produced one of the last wholly satisfying decorative cycles by a Rome Scholar of the period. From 1934, he exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, and was elected to its membership in the following year.
From the Second World War – in which he worked with the Camouflage Unit – Stroudley taught at St Martin’s School of Art and was a visiting lecturer at the Royal Academy Schools. Though he continued to live in London, his later work, exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1955, indicated regular painting trips to Kent and Sussex coasts. Every corner of the planet may have been explored, but digital technologies have opened up an endless universe to discover, a virtual labyrinth without an exit in which one can easily get lost. His drawings often serve vertiginous perspectives out of which emerge distressing voids that refer more to metaphorical states of mind than physical spaces. Cornelissen’s works offer an exploration of these fields and are therefore often viewed as places of anxiety. They could easily be interpreted as portraits of a technophobic mind, alarmed by the speeds and heights of our advanced neoliberal societies. But for some, the volatility of these spaces is also incredibly exciting – liberating even. Cornelissen represents a world in which things are freed from the pragmatism of their usage to exist simply for the interest of their geometry. This is particularly true of architecture, the prime subject of his artistic research.
