The painting is by the very well listed John Wilson Ewbank (1799-1847). John Wilson Ewbank (English, 4 May 1799–28 November 1847), was an English-born landscape and marine painter who was renowned for his naturalistic landscapes and seascapes of the Scottish borders and the North East coast of England. Ewbank was born at Darlington on 4 May 1799, the son of Michael Ewbank, an innkeeper. He was adopted as a child by a wealthy uncle who lived at Wycliffe, on the banks of the River Tees, in the North Riding of Yorkshire. Intended for the Roman Catholic priesthood, he was sent to Ushaw College, from which he absconded. In 1813 Ewbank was apprenticed to Thomas Coulson, an ornamental painter in Newcastle. In around 1816 he moved with Coulson to Edinburgh, where he was also taught by Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840), a popular painter amongst the Scottish and English nobility. Ewbank found work both as a painter and a teacher. He was nominated in 1830 one of the foundation members of the Royal Scottish Academy. In 1833 he is listed as living at 7 Union Street on the eastern fringe of the New Town in Edinburgh. Sadly after the death of his wife he descended into depression and was stripped of his status as an academician in 1838 and died in poverty of typhus in Sunderland in 1847. Ewbank’s calm seascapes were strongly influenced by 17th Century Dutch artists, particularly Willem and Adriaen Van de Velde. Although his best work dates from his early years, Ewbank became a popular and wealthy art teacher in the capital where made a reputation with cabinet pictures of banks of rivers, coast scenes, and marine subjects. Ewbank’s sketches from nature were especially admired, and a series of 51 drawings of Edinburgh by him were engraved by W. H. Lizars for James Browne's Picturesque Views of Edinburgh (1825). He was also noted as a painter of landscapes and seascapes as exemplified in this painting. The busy port of South Shields is located on the south side of the mouth of the River Tyne, Northumberland. The settlement was founded by the Romans in AD80 when Agricola built a fort on the Lawe Top. The Romans used it as a supply base for Hadrian’s Wall and by the 5th Century, South Shields was a major Roman military stronghold and commercial centre. By 1500, South Shields had become an important seaport, trading primarily in timber, lead, coal and salt. The first shipbuilding yard was established by Robert Wallis in about 1720, he was soon followed by others, including Thomas Marshall...

Per Wickenberg was a Swedish artist active in the early 19th century. He was only 34 when he died of tuberculosis; thankfully for the art history - at that point, he had practised the art of painting for more than 20 years. After his art studies at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm, he left Stockholm and travelled to Paris in 1837. In Paris, he finally received the well-deserved success for his landscapes; he won golden medals at the Salon de Paris both in 1838 for his painting "Nordiskt vinterlandskap" and in 1839 for a painting called "Vinterfiske". Per received a travel scholarship from Sweden and used that money for trips to Belgium and the Netherlands. Our painting is from that time, the time after his success in Paris, and in this magnificent painting, we see his talent in capturing the cold winter mood with meticulous care of details. Notice how nicely painted the children are on the ice, the sledge filled with hay to provide comfort and insulation against the cold. In the background, we can see an ice skater, a detail that gives the painting depth and three-dimensionality. This idyllic late 19th-century oil painting by English artist Edward William Cooke RA (1811-1880) depicts a west-country cove with two cottages, donkeys, figures, and fishing boats. Cooke was a highly renowned painter of marine scenes and landscapes who exhibited extensively at London’s Royal Academy. From our elevated vantage point, the view extends between two quaint cottages and across the beach before sweeping around the sandy coastline. Crystalline waters lap the shore, where moored craft rest. It’s an accomplished rendering of a challenging composition. It’s enhanced by trees, which essentially ‘frame’ the right side, while a wooded track provides interest on the left. Cooke was a keen admirer of the Dutch old masters, and the spirit of the Golden Age underpins this splendid work. In diaries, he recorded how he travelled by donkey to access elevated spots in the southwest, so it’s conceivable that he did so here. In his catalogue raisonné, it lists a work from the same year titled ‘Bay with Donkeys’. Born in Pentonville, London, Cooke was raised in the company of accomplished artists as both his father, George Cooke (1781-1834), and his uncle, William Bernard Cooke (1778-1855), were engravers. As such, they were associated with a circle of Victorian painters who aided Cooke’s early development. These included the highly regarded marine painter Clarkson Frederick Stanfield RA RBA (1793-1867), who provided frequent advice and inspiration. Indeed, as a teenager, Cooke produced numerous drawings after Stanfield’s works. A precocious talent, by the age of nine, he was already displaying an advanced understanding of engraving, particularly for ships, coupled with a natural, seemingly in-built skill as a draughtsman. Many of his early drawings depict pastoral landscapes after the masters, such as Nicolaes Berchem (1620-1683), Paulus Potter (1625-1654), and Karel Dujardin (1626-1678). In an extraordinary turn of events, in 1820, his advanced abilities led to his first commission when he provided botanical illustrations for John Loudon's 'Encyclopaedia of Plants’. These were followed by drawings published in the 'Botanical Cabinet...
