Born and raised in Bucharest Romania, I am a self-taught dreamer and artist. To dream is my path and to paint is my dream.
Lack of control is not my strong suit, but in the painting process things are different. The resin (also known as liquid glass) has a mind of its own and I learn to mindfully let go every time I paint. I allow those liquid color induced emotions I feel to drive me and take lead of my hands and at the end of the process, it’s just music and bliss. My inspiration is always nature's force, balance, perfection in purpose and beauty. It can be a place I travelled or sailed to or just a feeling floating on our boat docked in a Turkish marina or just on anchor nearby a Greek taverna on a remote tiny island in the Mediterranean or Aegean Sea. In the past tradition of painting, only the frontal parts of paintings were always the carriers of the content. I broke this millennial tradition and focused my attention on applying colour onto the edges and the back of the painting. These parts of my painting compositions are hidden from the viewer's eye and are visible only indirectly – as reflections of the paint reflecting onto the wall area, addressing the viewer with their immaterial presence. This creates coloured light and coloured shadows, which change in the intensity of the coloured radiation in daylight. A single painting composition, however, does not show just one static image, but addresses the viewer with a multitude of images generated by the changing daylight throughout the day. The attentive observer experiences such kinetic pictorial images personally and as a complete mental (spiritual) experience.
In the paintings of past periods, light is depicted only indirectly – as an “illuminator” of the materiality of the pictorial motif. For me, light itself is the central motif of painting exploration. In my luminous painting objects, however, I do not depict light, but create it. It is an actual, present light that communicates with the viewer as a living, moving part of the artistic message.

Ray Kass is an internationally recognized artist whose work is represented by Garvey/Simon: ART ACCESS in NYC and the Reynolds Gallery in Richmond, Virginia.
His paintings have been widely exhibited and have been represented in solo exhibitions in New York City by the Allan Stone Gallery, A.V.C. Contemporary Arts Gallery, ZONE: Chelsea Center for the Arts, Baumgartner Gallery, and ir77 Contemporary Art. He has received numerous grants and awards, including individual artists grants from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. His paintings reside in many public and private collections.
Ray Kass is Professor Emeritus of Art at Virginia Tech, and founder and director of The Mountain Lake Workshop; an ongoing series of collaborative and inter-related workshops centered in the environmental, cultural, and community resources of the Appalachian region of southwestern Virginia. The workshops have resulted in many unique, collaborative works of art that have been widely exhibited. Artists who have completed several workshops at Mountain Lake (or are currently engaged in ongoing projects) include folk-artist Howard Finster, Japanese artist & sculptor Jiro Okura, the late avant-garde composer, writer composer and artist John Cage, waste management installation-artist Mierle Laderman Ukeles (official artist in residence of the New York Sanitation Dept.), ceramic artist, poet and author M.C.
