Israeli Contemporary Abstract Geometric Painted Pierced Sculpture Zigi Ben Haim
Located in Surfside, FL
Zigi Ben-Haim, Metal sculpture Hand signed and dated Zigi Ben-Haim, 1998 Untitled, patinated aluminum or steel, Dimensions: 6"h x 2"w x 2"d This listing is for 1. I have 2 similar ones available. Zigi Ben-Haim (born 1945 in Baghdad, Iraq) is an Iraqi-American-Israeli painter, collage artist and sculptor who lives and works in New York City and Israel. Ben-Haim unveiled his sculpture, Treasure the Green, in SoHo on Broadway. The project was sponsored by the SoHo Broadway Initiative and the New York Department of Transportation's Art Program. The sculpture is considered to be the first sculpture to receive permission to be installed on a bus bulb on Broadway. The sculpture was made to "emphasize the importance of nature in our lives," and stands as a reminder of "the importance of reconnecting with the pure nature of the green." The sculpture uses the symbol of the leaf, which has been a major icon of Ben-Haim's work for the past 30 years. It symbolizes nature and it is a metaphoric way of emphasizing nature and the surrounding environment. He is of the first generation of Israeli artists to develop large international followings like Yaacov Agam, Menashe Kadishman and Avigdor Arikha. Ben-Haim has received numerous grants and awards, including from Pollock-Krasner Foundation, National Endowments for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Emily Harvey Foundation Venice, Muestra Int. de Obra Grafica (Spain), and the Ministry of Culture in Israel. His works are included and exhibited in numerous public and private collections around the world, including the Guggenheim Museum in N.Y.C., the Jewish Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Israel Museum, and the Tel-Aviv Museum. Abstract Mixed Media Painting. Oil on Silver Lame Screen Fabric
By Izhar Patkin
Located in Surfside, FL
Internationally celebrated, Israel-born artist Izhar Patkin has lived in the United States since 1977, first coming to prominence in the mid-1980s with his iconic Black Paintings, an inventive visual adaptation of Jean Genet's play The Blacks: A Clown Show. As a painter and sculptor, Patkin works in a narrative form, often drawing upon historical and cultural material to make complex visual metaphors. He imaginatively uses materials to achieve novel effects. For an exhibition in 1994 at Holly Solomon Gallery in New York City Patkin included six paintings depicting man’s expulsion from the primal garden. In his works on paper exploring the history of the Mendelssohn family, a Jewish family in Berlin around 1769 well-known for their cultural and artistic contributions, Patkin developed a trademark technique of stenciling, cutting, weaving, folding, and bending the paper. Patkin's major mid-career museum survey "The Wandering Veil," was shown at MASS MoCA in North Adams, the Tel Aviv Museum, and The Open Museum in Tefen, Ireland. His work has been included in exhibitions at Centre Pompidou, The Stedelijk Museum, MoMA PS1, Kustverein Stuttgart, among others. His work was also featured in the 1990 Venice Biennale and the 1987 Whitney Biennial. "Concatenation No #3" Blue, Pink, and Pink Striped Contemporary Abstract
Located in Houston, TX
Contemporary abstract geometric painting by artist Mark Byckowski. The piece features horizontal lines with a variety of vivid colors of blue, pink and purple painted against a bright white background. Each of Byckowski's work features a bright red line at the bottom right corner. Signed, titled, and dated on reverse. Currently unframed, but options are available. Artist Biography: Mark Byckowski was born March 18, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois. He remained in and out of the Chicago area until moving to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1990. In 2016 moved to Livingston, Texas where he currently resides. At an early age, he began drawing, studying, and creating art which has continued throughout his life. His artwork has changed and evolved through different periods and styles that span for decades. In the early years, he was influenced by traditional representational artists and illustrators, then impressionism, surrealism, and avant-garde of modernism captured his imagination. His artistic talent eventually led him to Northern Illinois University where he received Dean List Honors in Fine Art with an emphasis in the studio painting. As a studio artist he has produced a body of work in various media painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, and computer art also known as digital art. While in college the artist began searching for an original idea and style of his own. In 1979 when the first apple personal computers became available in the art department. He immediately knew the technology would eventually influence the direction of fine art in the future. It took time to learn how to program and explore the possibilities of computers as a new tool in the creation of art. Personal computers back then did not have the capabilities they have today and were not user-friendly. There were only two fine artists Mark Pinson and I working with computer technology back then. We worked on our own ideas and after completing the programs and turning them into paintings and drawings we collaborated and mounted a two-man exhibition. My first program was a series of interconnected images entitled “Concatenation” paintings and drawings created from the program were exhibited with Mark Pinson’s work entitled “Random” in a two- man show at The Holmes Center Gallery, Northern Illinois University on November 30, 1980. The second program entitled “Visual Music” the paintings and drawings exhibited in a one man show at The Recital Hall Music Building Gallery, Northern Illinois University on April 26, 1981. Followed by an exhibit sponsored by Illinois Bell, works on paper selected a drawing from the Visual Music series for “A New Generation of Artists” at The Lobby Gallery, 225 West Randolph Street, Chicago, Illinois, May 14 through June 12, 1981. The artist has participated in exhibitions dating back to 1974. The above exhibitions were selected because they marked a new beginning and direction in the artist’s work that continues to the present day. Other positions held in the Fine Art field include: 1984-1985- Austin Galleries, Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois (Main Gallery) and other locations Fine Art Consultant / Gallery Director 1982-1984- Atlas Galleries, Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois (Main Gallery) and other locations Fine Art Consultant / Assistant Gallery Director Artist Statement: Subject matter for computer art, painting, and drawing Mark S. Byckowski In 1979 searching for a for an original idea and style of my own I began looking for abstract ideas that I could program with a computer for a new a paintings series. I decided on an idea called “Concatenation” a series beginning from the original image undergoing a transformational change from the previous image connected in a linked series. Example: Image 1 is the original, image 2 changes image 1 by adding a new line, and image 3 changes image 2 by adding an additional new line. Continually changing the previous image by adding an additional line etc. In 1980 I began working on a new abstract idea that I could again program with a computer for a new painting and drawing series. The similarities between music and art intrigued me and began thinking about how I could create a visual representation of musical sound. In music notes are arrangements turned into compositions. In art color is also, arranged into compositions and both seek aesthetic rhythms and harmony. Depending on what notes or colors used can also, affect different emotions and moods. The Artists painting process Step one: Create the computer drawing. For years I have used Microsoft classic paint to create drawings. It allows me to arrange an aesthetic composition and select a color scheme in advance. I can make changes easily until I am satisfied. Step two: I build a custom stretcher frame with support bars and corner braces. Step three: Measure and Stretch the canvas onto the frame pulling the canvas and using a staple gun...

"1940 - A Study of Apples" Original Acrylic on Canvas by Tom Perkinson, Framed
Located in Encino, CA
"1940 - A Study of Apples" is an original acrylic painting on canvas by Tom Perkinson. His use of saturated violets, vivid yellows, and resplendent oranges pushes color to almost-otherworldly realms. Perkinson describes his style of painting as "Romantic Realism," a technique that incorporates two iconic art movements. This style, in combination with the imagination of the artist, produces remarkable results, showcasing Perkinson's keen ability to capture emotion, nature, and life - all in a brushstroke. Both his technical talent and choice of subject matter pair perfectly with its original carved, custom, gilt frame. This masterful work would make a great addition to an art collection and enhance most any home, perfect for those who have an affinity for still lifes, fruit-themed art, impressionism, romanticism, realism, plein-air painting, apples, and nature. In the artist’s own words: “My color combinations aren’t in the realm of the natural world, because I don’t paint reality; I’m a painter of fiction. I try to paint a sense of place, as though this scene really does exist. I have had my collectors ask me where this scene is, and I just have to point to my head and say I made it up. Thus, I think of my work as romantic realism. I’m painting a certain reality that I’ve invented, inspired by the fascinatingly rich Southwestern landscape.” “Color gets all the credit, but it’s the values that do all the work. I don’t begin with sketches, because I want to be free to follow the painting in any direction. I start with washes of different values and tints. Then, I begin to look for a landscape. Several directions will appear to me at this time, and then I have to decide on one of them. During these first few moments, I must establish my distance from the scene. Am I a mile away or just across the river? This is one of the first steps, and I have to decide before I can continue. It’s important for working out the perspective and how things are going to relate to one another in the picture. Then, as the landscape evolves, I look for more images to add to the composition.” Artist: TOM PERKINSON (1940-) Title: 1940 - A STUDY OF APPLES Medium & Surface: ORIGINAL ACRYLIC PAINTING ON CANVAS (framed) Signed: HAND SIGNED AND DATED BY ARTIST LOWER RIGHT Year Created: 1987 Country of Creation: UNITED STATES Image Area Dimensions: 21 x 28 INCHES Frame Dimensions:* 31.125 x 37.125 x 2.25 INCHES *This work of art is being sold framed. Artist Info/Bio: ARTIST BIOGRAPHY DOCUMENT IS INCLUDED Documentation: CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY IS INCLUDED About the Artist: Tom Perkinson, born in Indiana in 1940, has become distinguished as a regional painter, known for his work grounded in the visually dramatic landscape of the Southwest. As a child, Perkinson discovered he had a love for the natural landscape, and a talent for art. He fostered that talent through classes at the John Herron Institute of Art in Indianapolis, and then at the Chicago Art Academy upon graduating from high school. He received a degree in art from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1964, before moving on to graduate school at the University of New Mexico. Here, among noted works of a larger scale, he continued to paint the landscape, and it was this work that began to reflect a new fascination with the Southwest. He had found what would become an infinite source of inspiration. Influenced by early painters of the southern Indiana landscape...

"3 Pears Still Life with illusions" 40x50" soft focus oil on canvas
Located in Southampton, NY
This oil painting from 1985 is priced at a fraction of the original price. It was in our storage area and we just decided to put it on sale at a price which is a fraction of the original price. These still life with illusion paintings were originally sold in New York City at the D&D building on 59th street. It was a building that only interior designers were allowed to shop at. the general public could only go in with their interior designer to select an item. This came from the Haller Gallery in that space. It was originally priced at $3500 when at the gallery in the D&D building in NYC. It is oil on canvas and in very subtle colors. The top right area of the canvas show slight lines of cracking to the paint. You can see that on one of the close up images. The pale thick colors (The illusions) give a 3d floating look. We have another Still Life with 4 Pears also on sale this week.

He was known for his association with the surrealist movement of the 1940's, but his artwork continued to transform itself through the many trends that have occurred during his long career. In Italy he attended the Universita degli Studi in Pavia where he studied economics. In 1934, he moved to the United States settling in New York where he studied at the New School for Social Research and the Art Students' League. Considered the surviving dean of the Surrealist Movement and a member of the New York School, Donati painted with Ernst, Matta and Tanguy in the thirties and forties, and in particular with Andre Breton, regarded by many to be the grand master of Surrealism. He helped organize the Exposition Internationale du Surrealisme in Paris in 1947 where he exhibited three of his pieces. The Surrealists were known to avoid presenting or representing reality, and put the emphasis on invention and creativity by uncovering the poetic aspect of life with its kaleidoscopic multidimensional images, using reality only to enhance imagination. Donati survived the decline of Surrealism in the late 1940's by adapting his style to current art trends as he worked with new materials and textures throughout the 1950's. One trend with which he became involved was Abstract Expressionism, which originated in the 1940s, and became popular in the 1950s. It was a movement in which artists typically applied paint, rapidly and with force, to large canvases, in an effort to show feelings and emotions. Paint might be applied with large brushes, sometimes dripping or even throwing it onto canvas. Abstract Expressionist work is characterized by a strong dependence on what appears to be accident and chance, although it is actually highly planned. Donati held a retrospective at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1961 and went on to exhibit at the Betty Parsons Gallery with other forerunners of American Abstract Expressionism: Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, and Jackson Pollock. It was at this time that Donati created some of his most inventive and extraordinary work, some of which was featured in a survey exhibition at the Alter & Gil Gallery, Beverly Hills, California, in January 2000. He has held many teaching positions and has been an active lecturer, while continuing to add to his artistic repertoire. From 1960 to 1962 he was a Visiting Lecturer at Yale University, and from 1962 to 1972 a Member of the Yale University Council for the Arts and Architecture. He has had seventy-five one-man shows, among them an exhibit of new paintings at the Maxwell Davidson Gallery (57th St., New York) in the fall of 1997. Donati's work is held in collections throughout the world, and his work has appeared in over 300 articles and publications, two hard cover books...

Tectonic Tension / - Archetypes of Painting -
Located in Berlin, DE
Jürgen Möbius (*1939 Großenhain), Tectonic Tension. Oil on hardboard, 47.5 x 60 cm, 49 x 61.5 cm (frame), signed lower right "Möbius" and dated "[19]81". - Upper left corner with a small chip, light scratches and a little rubbed in places. Provisional gallery frame with traces of use. - Archetypes of Painting - About the artwork The form structure in front of the eye is overlapped by the frame. Thus, the frame does not open up a space in which something is presented, but rather shows the seemingly arbitrary section of a comprehensive context that cannot be framed as such. We see forms that stand in a structure of tension with each other, whereby the individual black and brown forms, which continue almost endlessly beyond the frame, already show a tension in themselves, since they are not only forms, but also surfaces - form surfaces, while the light blue surface ground is at the same time forms that appear as surface forms. The formed surfaces and surface forms are nested within each other and form a structure that encompasses all elements. The angular arrangement of the black and brown shaped surfaces gives the structure a tectonic character. The tension is thus heightened to the point of paradox, since the black shape at the front is overlapped by the brown shape at the bottom in the center of the picture, which would be impossible in real space. It is precisely through this "paradox" that Möbius demonstrates that the paradoxical is reality within painting. It is, so to speak, the most original possibility of painting, which distinguishes it from the other arts. In combination with the tectonic formations, Jürgen Möbius creates an archaic primordial painting, which, however, should not be confused with the autonomous color and form cosmos of Suprematism à la Kasimir Malevich. Instead of homogeneous, perfectly colored forms, here the colors are deliberately applied unevenly, and the light blue is mixed with the brown in a manner determined by the brushstroke. At the edges of the surface forms, the uneven application of paint allows the wood of the unprimed hardboard to show through. In this way, Möbius illustrates that we are dealing with a painting that has been created by an act of painting - an act, however, that takes hold of the original principles of painting and thus realizes painting as such. About the artist From 1959 to 1965 Jürgen Möbius studied painting at the University Institute for Art and Work Education in Mainz. He also studied philosophy and art history at the University of Mainz. Afterwards he worked as a freelance artist in Mainz. At first, Möbius created material reliefs and installations, then, around 1974, he turned increasingly to conceptual art and added cinematic means. During this phase he wrote the manifesto-like essay "Principles of Supranatural Landscape" (1979). From 1981 on, Möbius concentrated on painting and searched for artistic ways to "treat intellectual and sensual perception equally in the fusion of representational and abstract pictorial elements" (Wolfgang Zemter). He found inspiration on his study trips to Thailand and Sri Lanka. "The pure painting of Jürgen Möbius flows through us as a timeless expression of memory and energy, ploughing our perception and bringing us the happiness of seeing authentic, immovable form. - Philippe Büttner Selection of solo exhibitions 1969 Galerie Würzner, Düsseldorf / Galerie Gurlitt, Mainz 1972 Städtische Galerie, Mainz 1973 Galerie Schloss Ringenberg Rathaus, Kleve 1974 Röderhausmuseum, Wuppertal 1976 Galerie Glasing, Osnabrück / Städtische Galerie, Herne 1977, 1997, 2004 Märkisches Museum, Witten 1979 Studio M, Bamberg / Staatstheater, Darmstadt 1980 Galerie Stolànovà, Wiesbaden / Mittelrheinmuseum, Koblenz 1982 Galerie Dornhöfer, Mainz 1984 Galerie Neumühle, Schlangenbad 1985 Landesmuseum, Mainz / Kunstverein, Ludwigshafen / Nassauischer Kunstverein, Wiesbaden 1986 Museum, Bochum / Galerie der Stadt Iserlohn 1987, 1990 Galerie Klaus Kiefer, Essen 1987, 2000 Galerie Ulrike Buschlinger, Wiesbaden 1988 Kunsthalle Darmstadt 1988, 1992, 1996, 1999 Galerie Leonhard, Basel 1992, 2002 Galerie Zulauf, Freisheim 1994 Galerie Remy, Vallendar 1995 Sendezentrum des Zweiten Deutschen Fernsehens, Mainz 2001 Collegium oecumenicum, Bamberg / MVB Forum für Kultur und Wirtschaft, Mainz 2006 Adam Gallery, London Selection of group exhibitions 1969 ‘International Graphic Arts’, Galerie Dalléas Bordeaux, Paris 1975 ‘Deutscher Künstler-Bund’, Dortmund 1979 ‘Man and man’s Images’, Märkisches Museum Witten 1980 ‘Love-Dokuments of our Time’, Art Hall Darmstadt and Art Association Hannover 1982 ‘Work - Progress – Position’, Nassau Art Association Wiesbaden 1983 ‘Principle Hope – Utopic Aspects in Art and Culture of the 20th Century’, Museum Bochum 1986 ‘Selfportraits’, Gallery Klaus Kiefer Essen 1987 ‘The Dying and Death’, Gallery Klaus Kiefer Essen 1989 ‘Where are You, Revolution – Freedom, Liberty, Egality, Fraternity to-day’, Museum Bochum 1990 ‘Flight – a Problem within the Memory of Man’, Kunsthalle Darmstadt ‘Art and War 1939 – 89’, House of Cultures Berlin 1991 ‘Material and Form’, Pillnitz Castle Dresden and Pfalz Gallery Kaiserslautern 1995 20 Years Exhibitions, Chrämerhuus Langenthal, Schweiz 1998 ‘Works on Paper’, Klaus Kiefer Gallery Essen 2000 ‘Acquisitions 1900 – 2000’, Mittelrhein-Museum Koblenz 2001 ‘Strange Pictures’, Klaus Kiefer Gallery Essen 2002 ‘10 Years Buschlinger Gallery’, Buschlinger Gallery Wiesbaden 2004 ‘Eternal Space – Pictures and Sculptures’, Dome of Bamberg 2005 Art Fair Chicago, Adam Gallery, London Selected Bibliography Mittelrheinisches Landesmuseum (Hrsg.): Jürgen Möbius - Neue Bilder, Mainz 1985.
