Modernist beach scene; signed lower right; image size is 11.5 x 8.5 inches, framed it measures Ruth Gikow (January 6, 1915 Ukraine - 1982 New York City) was an Important American Jewish woman visual artist known primarily for her work as a genre painter. Her paintings often depict human figures interacting with an urban environment. Ruth Gikow was born in 1915 in the Ukraine. Her father, Boris, was a photographer and her mother was named Lena. In 1920 she emigrated to New York City due to civil war and pogroms against the Jewish community. The pilgrimage took around two years. Once in New York City, the Gikow family found themselves in poverty, rather than the middle-class comfort they enjoyed in Ukraine. Ruth Gikow's skill was prominent even in youth, as she excelled in drawing in elementary school and entered Washington Irving High School at age thirteen in which she furthered her art prowess. Later, she studied at the Cooper Union Art School, where she studied under school director Austin Purvis, Jr. and regional artist John Steuart Curry. In her second year of Art School, she was awarded a scholarship which she used to work with fellow painter Raphael Soyer. She joined the New York City WPA Federal Art Project in 1935, where she was allowed to dedicate herself to her artwork full-time. In 1939, inspired by the muralists Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, she applied and later won a commission to paint murals for Bronx Hospital, Rockefeller Center and the New York World's Fair. After the events of Pearl Harbor and once the Federal Arts Project was abandoned, Gikow's murals were sought after by New York department stores wishing to commission wall paintings. Gikow became disillusioned with mural painting due to the commercial aspect of these commissions. Roberto Lauro is a British-Swiss Post War & Contemporary artist who was born in 1932. Roberto Lauro was born in 1932 in Gorey Harbor on the island of Jersey (Great Britain) the son of a Swiss mother, Rosa Ramseier, from Oberdiessbach / Emmental, Switzerland, and and Italian father Innocenzo Roberto Lauro, born in Mondovi, Italy. In 1941 he moved to Switzerland with his mother. 1949-1953 he lived in Gunten (Switzerland) where he did an Apprenticeship as a lithograph and offset printer and graphic designer in Thun. There he was introduced to the color theory of Johannes Itten by Hermann Oberli at the Bern School of Applied Arts. From 1953 to 1955 he worked as a fine art printer in Norway where he was influenced by the color theory of Edvard Munch. These works bears the influence of Russian artist Andre Lanskoy, Tachisme and the Cobra artists Karel Appel, Constant, Corneille, Christian Dotremont, Asger Jorn, and Joseph Noiret. In 1955-1956 he worked as an offset printer in Amsterdam (Netherlands). Visit to the Instituut voor Kunstnijverheidsonderwijs. In 1957 he returned to Gunten, Switzerland. Where he started working in printmaking and and oil painting. He resumed his studies at the Bern School of Applied Arts. He was greatly impacted and influenced by abstract art on the occasion of a large Paul KIee exhibition. In 1958 he moved to Zurich where he worked part-time work as an offset copyist; fulfilling graphic orders for advertising agencies. In 1962 he took his final examination as graphic designer at the Zurich School of Applied Arts. In 1980 he begins his development of three-dimensional picture objects, Sculpture, detachment from the canvas, using metal as a support and play space for light and color. By 1981 he has turned full time to fine art. He spends the next years growing and developing his considerable talent. Inspired by classical music, the rhythm, mood and lightness of which form the basis for the large swings and loops of his colorfully lacquered metal and blown glass sculptures. These are "pensieri", thought sketches that capture the emotions in countless versions. There is something dance-like about his rotating sculptures. Everything becomes music and the rhythm of colors. In 1988, after exhibitions in Europe, he has his first exhibitions in Atlanta and San Francisco (USA), In 1989 he does his first glass and metal sculptures at the Roberto Niederer glassworks, Hergiswil (Switzerland). In 1992 has a retrospective exhibition in the Tan Gallery, Zurich, and the Eleonore Austerer Gallery, San Francisco. They Publish a catalogue raisonne, Eine Retrospektive, covering a 45 year career. In 1993 he creates A Retrospective, a unique sculpture in a table top form that contains his catalogue raisonne and an original lithograph. 1993–1995 he begins work on a number of large scale public outdoor commissions, including Light Columns for a Bank building, and a commission of a sculpture-fountain in Oetwil am See. In 2001 he creates a wall sculpture entitled "Color Poems of the Yearly Cycle. A linen bound book enclosed in a unique plexi display with a one - of a - kind metal and glass sculpture,containing 12 linocuts each printed in colors and signed. Roberto Lauro's sculptural work work is spontaneous and loaded with energy. The furrows, rifts, cracks and scars in the metal allow light to enter; it is then reflected back by the glass. His work is a clear statement of our times, uniting the intellect and the heart in search of the spiritual. Like the interplay of light and shadow, his sculpture combines fragile, transparent glass with solid, heavy iron. These colorful and luminous sculptures convey a powerful presence and emit vibrant positive energy. With their jagged exteriors and translucent cores, the spectacular sculptures created by the synergy of metal and glass are powerful - yet fragile. Lauro has created and mastered his own idiom and proven that through the artist sheer will and vision, seemingly incompatible materials such as iron and glass can indeed be combined. A beautiful and important painting by the great artist Enzo Benedetto, an absolute protagonist of the so-called ‘Second Futurism’. It depicts a seascape captured in its essence of natural energy with the waves of the sea crashing powerfully on the coast, probably a glimpse of his homeland, Calabria. This artwork, never before on the market, comes from an important Italian private collection. Enzo Benedetto (Reggio Calabria 1905 - Rome 1993) Benedetto, called Record by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, approached the Second Futurism in 1924 after meeting Mino Somenzi and was active as a Futurist until his death, becoming a tenacious continuer of the movement's principles, revisited in 1967 with the Futurism Today manifesto. Benedetto theorised and practised the union of colour with the word and coined the term chrome-paroise to define the synthesis of painting and writing. In 1926 he promoted the futurist hall for the 4th Calabrian Art Biennial in Reggio Calabria where Depero, Dottori, Tato, Fillia, Pozzo, Benedetto Marinetti and himself, amongst others, exhibited. In 1927 he participated in the National Futurist Exhibition in Palermo. He moved permanently to Rome in 1927 and joined the Manifesto in 1931. In a short time he took part in the ‘great Futurist exhibition’ in Imola, the ‘first exhibition of Calabrian art’ in Rome, the ‘33 Futurists’ exhibition at the Pesaro gallery in Milan, and above all the ‘great Futurist exhibition’ at the ‘international artistic circle’ in Via Margutta in Rome. Benedetto had begun flying in 1926, as a photo of the time documents. That same year, inspired by the exploits of the aviator of the same name, he had executed the painting De Pinedo. He adhered to the Manifesto already signed by Balla, Marinetti, Depero, Dottori, Tato, Prampolini and Fillia, which advocated the triumph of a spatiality enhanced by flight in its dynamic effects and freed from the fixity of the horizon. In World War II he was imprisoned in Africa by British troops until the end of the conflict. Benedetto continued his Futurist activities in the second half of the 20th century. From 1939 to 1946 he volunteered for the African campaign and was sent to Libya, after which he was imprisoned for six years in the concentration camps in Alexandria, Ismailia, and in India in Bangalore and Yol in Kashmir. During this imprisonment he was able to paint and some canvases from this period were brought back to Italy, rolled up as personal luggage, In January 1943, he painted Yol, a new psychological oil portrait of Francesco Tommaso Marinetti. In 1946, he returned to Italy and in April 1947 presented his first solo exhibition in Rome. The exhibition dedicated to the great Italian poet and founder of Futurism was opened by Benedetta Marinetti. In World War II he was imprisoned in Africa by British troops until the end of the conflict. Benedetto continued his Futurist activities in the second half of the 20th century. In 1946, he returned to Italy and in April 1947 presented his first solo exhibition in Rome. In 1948 he had a personal exhibition in Capri at the gallery, ‘l'oblò’, and in Reggio Calabria in the Hall of the ‘Francesco Cilea’ Municipal Theatre. In 1949 he took part in the Calabrian Biennial in Reggio Calabria. In 1950 quanta took part with ceramics in the Selective Exhibition of Artistic Craftsmanship in the Angelicum in Milan, and with paintings in the Historical Review of Futurism in the Palazzo di Re Enzo in Bologna. He then held an important solo exhibition in Milan, at the ‘Centro d'Arte San Babila’ and participated in the sixth Quadrennial in Rome. He had a solo exhibition in Fano and another exhibition in Rome in the Galleria del Palazzo delle Esposizioni and in the Galleria del Teatro ‘il Millimetro’. In 1951 he took part in the collective exhibition ‘Mostra Nazionale della Pittura e della Scultura futurista’ (National Exhibition of Futurist Painting and Sculpture) in Bologna, Palazzo del Podestà, with Acquaviva, Giacomo Balla, Primo Conti, Tullio Crali, Fortunato Depero and Gerardo Dottori. In 1953 he took part in the exhibition ‘l'arte nella vita del mezzogiorno’ (art in the life of southern Italy) in Rome and was included in the jury for the awarding of prizes. He also took part in the third exhibition ‘il maggio di Bari’ and in the ‘biennale del mare’ in Rimini. From 1954 to 1960 he took part in many collective exhibitions such as the ‘Sesto Maggio di Bari’, the ‘Villa San Giovanni’ award, the ‘Terni award’, the ‘Avezzano award’, the fifth exhibition of the ‘Triglia d'Oro’, the Michetti award, a personal exhibition in Varese, at the ‘piccola permanente’ In 1961, he stayed in Munich in Germany and exhibited at the Schoeninger Gallery and in the city's ‘Kuntz-Cabnier-Klimt’ studio. Encouraged by his long-standing friendship with Emilio Pettoruti, he also stayed in Paris, where he painted syntheses of the city that were very successful. In 1962, he held a personal exhibition in Venice at the San Vidal gallery and another in Munich at the Wolfgang Gurlit gallery.
