He was invited in 1889 to join the Group of Twenty ( Cercle des XX) which had been launched in 1884 by Oscar Maus and had in the interim emerged as an influential force in Belgian artistic circles, not least by bringing to public and critical attention the work of such artists as Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. The Cercle des XX would be reborn in 1894 as La Libre Esthétique. In the early days of the Cercle des XX, Lemmen espoused a pointilliste technique. His earlier painting was clearly influenced by the Neo-Impressionists; over time, however, his style became more subtle and nuanced - recalling, perhaps, that of his compatriot Van Rysselberghe, another Cercle des XX member. With the group's rebirth as the Libre Esthétique, Lemmen's work became more intimiste in character, most notably in his portraits, nudes and still-lifes, where the influence of Bonnard and Vuillard is unmistakable, as is that of Renoir, particularly after Lemmen's travels in the Midi in 1911. From this point onwards, he would go on to make a major contribution to the renewal of the graphic and decorative arts in terms of his input to the new 'free' aesthetic and to Art Nouveau. Although his draughtsmanship retained its essential purity and elegance of line, his painting became more fleshy, imprecise and sensual, his compositions governed less by technical considerations than by the urgent need to express his emotions. Between 1889 and 1893, Lemmen exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris, aligning himself with the Neo-Impressionists. In 1893, Henry van de Velde invited him to participate in the Pour l'Art association that had been created in Antwerp. He travelled to the south of France in 1911. By this juncture, he had already exhibited solo on two occasions (in 1906 and 1908) at the Galerie Druet in Paris. A further solo exhibition in 1913, his first in Brussels, cemented Lemmen's reputation. - Madame Henri Van Kemmel Maurice Prendergast came with his family to Boston in 1861. Working in a textile store, Maurice Prendergast was at first self-taught in painting, making souvenir cards and shop signs. He went to Britain in 1886, then to Paris in 1891 and registered at the Académie Julian with Jean-Paul Laurens, Benjamin-Constant, and Charles Blanc as teachers, working also with Gustave Courtois at the Académie Colarossi. More importantly he saw the Impressionists’ paintings and the Nabis at the Galerie Durand-Ruel. He returned to the United States in 1895, settling in Winchester (Massachusetts) and went frequently to New York. In 1898 he again went to Europe where he stayed until 1900, visiting Paris, Florence, Siena, Rome, Capri, and Venice, where he spent six months. Between 1907 and the beginning of World War I he went again four times to Europe but never returned there after the war. In New York where he finally settled, with William Glackens, Robert Henri, and John Sloan among others, Prendergast was one of the members ofThe Eight, gathered by Robert Henri to counter the pervading academicism. The group exhibited in 1908 at the Macbeth Galleries and took part in the Armory Show of 1913. After that Prendergast did not exhibit again with the group. In 1914 he left Boston definitively for New York. Prendergast was in his thirties before he began to devote himself to painting. In his late beginnings he painted in the open air as the Impressionists did, mainly in watercolours with clear brushstrokes and an elegant virtuosity recalling his then admiration for James Whistler and Claude Monet. Between 1892 and 1905 he carried out two hundred monotypes, a technique of which he was the undisputed master in America at that time and which expressed the influence of Japanisme. During his stays in France he painted views of Paris, but also Brittany and Normandy. In this period, in 1896, he was chosen to illustrate My Lady Nicotine by Matthew Barrie. During his third stay in Europe, from 1898 to 1900, he painted in Paris, at Saint-Malo, and mainly in Venice, where, influenced by Vittore Carpaccio he introduced brightly coloured banners into his animated compositions. In oils he painted slowly, touching up his paintings by superimposed brushstrokes, sometimes over several years. He chose to use the divided stroke in an early period, a technique which had similarities with Post-Impressionism. After his travels in Europe and his discovery of Paul Cézanne, he evolved in the direction of the neo-Impressionism of Georges Seurat, placing little dots of colours with a knife, then of the Nabis and even later Fauvism, painting large brushed surfaces in bright colours. After 1899, his Ponte della Paglia in Venice freed itself from strict divisionism, adopting the dense composition in vertically superimposed planes of the Nabis. Like the members of the group of eight, he took his subjects from the daily life of ordinary people, in scenes in the parks or on the beaches of New England, picnics or sometimes circuses. Nevertheless the happy vision that he had of the world separated him strongly from the evolution that led his companions to paint the most miserable and populous milieus, which gave them the name of The Ashcan School. His compositions are arranged in surfaces superimposed vertically, without depth; while the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists were influenced by the layout of Japanese prints, Prendergast was inspired more by Persian miniatures. The decorative elements and the build-up of characters in crowds are placed frontally, like garlands on a tapestry, particularly as he seeks a texture effect, covered entirely by the subject without any empty spaces. His attraction to colours caused him to research all the motifs that he introduced into these compositions: umbrellas, parasols, balloons, draperies. In 1911–1912, he experimented with pastel and treated new subjects, nudes and still-lifes. After 1913, in sympathy with the Symbolists, he put nude figures and everyday characters side by side in the same composition. In his last years, and above all in the watercolours, he discarded the divided stroke and applied larger brushstrokes, similar to the technique of Henri Matisse. Fidelity to the leisurely settings and elegant grooming of the period gave his works, apart from their artistic value, a charming sociological aspect. Singular, almost marginal in his time, his paintings stand out by the density of their composition, in form and colouring, characterised by the accumulation of detail, minutiae of scenery, the serried ranks of people that animate them, the chromatic polyphony of elegance, umbrellas, parasols, and flags. He is a complete painter, particularly generous, who would never be happy to provide only samples of his art. Following Whistler and Mary Cassatt, Maurice Prendergast is one of the most interesting and original Post-Impressionist American painters, and perhaps marks exactly the boundary between the 19th and the 20th centuries. He was considered to be an ‘old master’ from 1920 on, and his works appeared in very many exhibitions of modern American painting. He had his first solo exhibition in 1897 at the Chase Gallery of Boston, where his works were noticed by Madame Montgomery Sears, who made a collection, taking the advice of Mary Cassatt. In 1915 six paintings and watercolours exhibited at the Carroll Gallery of New York established his success and drew the great collectors to him, among whom were Albert Barnes and John Quinn. Sánchez-Barbudo specialised in elaborate 'costume pictures', delighting the viewer with impressive details finely rendered with dazzling technical virtuosity. Here, Sánchez-Barbudo depicts a well-to-do bourgeois family receiving a cardinal in their home. The interior, sumptuously furnished in the rococo style, along with the rich costumes and fabrics, are beautifully observed. Yet beyond the high technique lavished upon the composition, the treatment is comic and full of character and suffused with a gently satirising anti-clericalism. The cardinal, far from getting the attention he expects, is, literally, sidelined, his expression and body language showing his pique. There is no doubt that contemporary collectors and spectators took pleasure in the sight of noble self-respecting figureheads of the church being brought back down to earth. The comedy was appealing, and the message suited the prevailing political mood of an increasingly secular middle-class buying public. Salvador Sánchez Barbudo was born on March 14, 1857 in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz). He was one of the most important Spanish artists of the "casacón" genre, who followed the Fortuny tradition in Rome. Here is a painting that will lift you - one feels happy every time one looks at it. It is such a lovely, unusual twist to the theme of the floral still life: here we have flowers, not in a vase, but attached to a wooden front door. I wonder if the artist did this with actual flowers, perhaps for a sweetheart, and then decided to paint the scene? At any rate: who wouldn't want to come home to find a large bunch of glorious lilac as they come home? The artist is Emile Baudoux (1850 -1929), who studied with Humbert and Cabanel. Paris-born, he liked to work in Normandy, where he had his studio. He exhibited his work at the "Salon des Artistes Français" until 1927, where he obtained a gold medal in 1910. The important oil on canvas presented here, dating from 1901, may have been shown at the Salon, as it bears an exhibition number "30" at the upper right of the canvas. Like his mentor the great American Impressionist William Merritt Chase, Charles Webster Hawthorne was equally admired in his own day as both a talented painter and a highly influential instructor. Hawthorne first studied with Chase at his Shinnecock Summer School of Art, which was specifically dedicated to open-air landscape painting. Not only did Hawthorne quickly absorb all the principles of Chase’s instruction, but he also became determined to found his own school based on the same model. In 1899 Hawthorne discovered the small fishing village of Provincetown on the furthermost tip of Cape Cod, and after purchasing a large house on Miller Hill, he opened the Cape Cod School of Art, which proved to be an immediate success. While Hawthorne’s own approach as a teacher owed much to Chase, he developed a distinctly unique painting style and teaching method that defies easy categorization. He was greatly impressed with the work of Franz Hals, which he was exposed to during his trip to Holland in the summer of 1898. Hawthorne was particularly struck by Hals’ Regentesses of the Old Men’s Almhouse, and from this work he absorbed a deep appreciation for the power of human expression and an economy of technique. Hawthorne applied these lessons to his own realistic portraits of Provincetown fishermen and their families; these works have a somber, almost melancholy quality to them, and they reveal a sense of the vulnerability of the human condition. Stylistically, Hawthorne maintained a life-long commitment to the importance of color. “Beauty in art,” he said, “is the delicious notes of color one against the other.” Of equal importance to him was capturing the effects of light. He told his students: “Everything in painting is a matter of silhouettes. Hold light against shadow, not light against light.” He developed a particular technique of layering glazes and texturing the surface of his paintings, which heightens the relationship between the colors and creates a light effect that seems to emanate from within the painting. These stylistic techniques in combination with his straightforward compositions of one or more figures shown at close range create the hallmarks of Hawthorne’s best paintings. Hawthorne and his wife Ethel’s 1905-1907 trip to Italy did not result in a drastic impact on his artistic style. Nonetheless, it proved to be a transformative and enlightening voyage. The extensive trip was financed by collectors who paid in advance for a painting to be produced abroad. On the trip, Hawthorne explored the work of old masters and was struck particularly by the paintings of Titian, which to Hawthorne, demonstrated the master’s true adoration for the act of painting itself through his handling of paint and color.
