Original oil on canvas painting in very heavy impasto of a cityscape by the Serbian/French artist, Nicolas Markovitch. Signed Philippe lower left, one of the pseudonyms used by the artist. Dated to the right of signature 1960. Condition is very good. Bourg-la-Reine is the likely subject matter of the painting and was where the artist had made his home until his death in 1964. The painting is housed in its original frame in fine condition. Overall framed measurements are 28.75 by 25.25 inches. Provenance: A Ellenton, Florida collector.
Bourg-la-Reine is a commune in the southern suburbs of Paris, France. It is located 9.1 km (5.7 mi) from the center of Paris.
Nicolas Markovitch (Serbian-French, 1894-1964), artist, watercolorist, architect and block printer.
Markovitch used more than a few pseudonyms over the course of his career, such as; A. Marc or just Marc, and J. Philippe or Jean Philippe. Alternate sources state other pseudonyms with the full name listed as Andre Marc or Andre Marc Rothenburg, which are both still incorrect for the artist.
Markovitch was an architect who worked and lived in France, and is primarily known for his architectural paintings of city buildings, cathedrals and monuments, along with Swiss, Italian, German, English and Belgian landscapes, cityscapes, mountainscapes and seascapes, lake and marine scenes, and many scenes in the U.S. especially cityscapes of New York City and other places such as Gloucester, MA.
Markovitch painted watercolor illustrations for several books (Paris, Editions, Alpina) from the late 1920's-early 40's, and is credited for the watercolors in the Editions with his real name Nicolas Markovitch or N. Markovitch. He was one of the best watercolorists of the time and went on to do a lot of work with the Stehli Brothers company Stehli Frères, Editeurs, Zurich, Switzerland throughout the 1930's and 40's.
Stehli Frères published many different watercolor series of his works, and they were printed in various sizes, typically from about 9" x 12" to 12" x 16", and others as large as 18" x 24".??

Doris Lyons Hoover (American, 1927-2014) was born in Fort Payne, Alabama, on Oct. 8, 1927, on her grandparents' farm. She was raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and attended college at the University of Chattanooga, (now UTC) where she received honors in ar. At U.C. she met her husband Jack Hoover, and the couple moved to Palo Alto in 1954.

The original piece is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. It was exhibited at the Met's "26th Annual National Exhibition of Advertising and Editorial Art" in 1947, and then again at the 1950 exhibition titled "20th Century Painters: A Special Exhibition of Oils, Water Colors and Drawings Selected from the Collections of American Art in the Metropolitan Museum". Pluie a Venice is painted in Hambourg's preferred palette of muted blue-green, grey, and gold with splashes of ruby red, deep blue, and emerald green. The soft colors work well for beach scenes and rainy days such as the ones portrayed in this painting. The impressionistic scene shows multiple pedestrians strolling down the boardwalk, shielding themselves from the rain with colorful umbrellas that provide pops of color and balance the overcast sky.
The background contains a three-masted ship and Piazza San Marco's famous bell tower and Basilica. Hambourg uses the minimum number of brushstrokes necessary to portray ships, seagulls, buildings and people as well as reflections on the glistening sidewalk. The brushstrokes in the sky have an interesting texture that is controlled yet carefree and there is heavy impasto throughout. His portrayal is both realistic and romanticized.
Hambourg was clearly influenced by the great Impressionist artists of earlier generations, perhaps none more than the one with a direct connection to his family. Hambourg's wife, Nicole Rachet, was born into a family with a large collection of works by Impressionist master Eugene Boudin. Rachet's grandfather was a contemporary and friend of Boudin's, and a collector of his work. In their later years, Hambourg and Rachet donated over 300 canvases by Boudin and other artists to the Eugene Boudin Museum in Honfleur, France. Yoakum began drawing in the early 1960s. Most of his work consists of radiantly colored landscapes with mountains, water, trees, and winding roads in abstract and complex configurations. his period of greatest activity — 1965 to 1970 — when he usually made one drawing a day.
Yoakum maintained he had seen all the places represented in his drawings, a statement that may not be true in some instances. He traveled a great deal, beginning in his early teens when he ran away from home and became a circus handyman. Yoakum’s drawings can be considered memory images growing out of either actual or imagined experiences. All of his drawings have titles that grew longer and more specific over the years. He dated his works with a rubber stamp — an oddly impersonal, labor-saving device.
Although Joseph Yoakum gave vastly different accounts of his background, he was, throughout his life, classified as an African American. Sometimes Yoakum claimed that he was a full-blooded “Nava-joe” Indian, one of twelve or thirteen children born to a farmer on an Indian reservation in Window Rock, Arizona. At other times he insisted that he was of African-American descent. He described his mother as a strong woman who was a doctor and knowledgeable in the use of herbal medicines. Yoakum’s family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, during his early childhood. His father was employed briefly in the railroad yards prior to settling permanently on a farm in nearby Walnut Grove...

'Quay by the Bridge in Paris', watercolour on art paper, by Roland Dubuc (circa 1970s-80s). The broad Parisian river Seine divides the city into the left and right banks. The Left Bank, or Rive Gauche is famous for the Latin Quarter while the Right Bank is better known for attractions like Arc de Triomphe, Montmartre, and the Louvre. A trip here simply isn’t complete without a stroll along this romantic river. And a cruise on the Seine or drinks aboard an anchored boat along the quay is a wonderful experience as well. The artist Dubuc created many artworks with the Seine as backdrop. You can have this one right in your living room. In good overall condition, the piece is newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. Upon request a video of the painting may be provided.
About the Artist: Roland DuBuc (1924-1998), French artist, the sixth of 13 children and son of a construction worker. The very precariousness of the family's financial situation forced him to go to work at the age of 14. In extreme poverty, he moved to Rouen where he was lodged by the Salvation Army. During that time he struck up friendships with several artists who gave him advice and taught him techniques of drawing. A substantial oil painting showing two lovers reclining in a barge on a stream before a Persian palace crowned with domes and minarets; the pair elegantly dressed, with the young woman bejeweled and the young man playing a lute.
Born in Los Angeles, Leon D'Usseau began training under the guidance of his father, who was among the earliest fine art film directors in Hollywood. At the age of twelve, he was drawing seriously and, at fifteen, he received a working scholarship at Chouinard School of Art where he studied under Merrill Gage and Alexander Archipenko and also taught a line-drawing class.
