Random Stone of Oblivion
Located in Montreal, Quebec
I made these paintings in response to a prediction for a change in the colour of the sky and oceans as a consequence of man-made climate change. This idea described by Peter Ward in his book Under a Pale Green Sky is based on his study of the great mass extinction events of the past. For many of these extinction events the earth’s chemistry changed the sky to green and the oceans purple. My personal memories are often tied to colour – my first recollection is of an orange cup being handed to me, and I can vividly remember the very first time I was able to wield colour with a red crayon. As a painter, I acutely feel the significance of this change in colour of the world’s landscapes...

"MacMahan's Maine, " Howard Everett Giles, Figurative Landscape, Impressionism
Located in New York, NY
Howard Everett Giles (1876 - 1955) MacMahan's Maine Oil on canvas backed with board 30 x 30 inches Signed lower right Provenance: Art Institute of Chicago Christie's New York, December 8, 2011, Lot 2 Howard Giles spent most of his career in New York City, where he was an educator, magazine illustrator, and painter who espoused the theory of Dynamic Symmetry. He was born in Brooklyn, and as a young man worked in a New York railroad office. Financial support of a family friend allowed him to study at the Art Students League with H. Siddons Mowbray. In early 1910, he became an illustrator for Scribner's Magazine, and in 1912, on sketching assignment for Scribner's went to England. During World War I, he did illustration for Harper's Monthly Magazine, and many of his images were 'roaring twenties' genre and figure paintings. In 1912, he began teaching life classes at the New York School of Fine and Applied Arts (later Parsons School of Design), and remained there until the late 1920s. During that time, he was also a part-time instructor at the Childs-Walker School in Boston, and accepted numerous invitations to lecture including at Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Detroit Institute of Arts and Wellesley College. His initial painting style was Impressionism, but he grew increasingly interested in other scientific, aesthetic theories. He worked with Jay Hambridge from 1916 to 1919, applying Hambridge's theory of Dynamic Symmetry to his painting and his lecture topics. From 1922 to 1926, Giles also worked with and was influenced in his own painting by colorist theorist Denman Ross, who espoused a limited and related color palette. For many of his paintings, Giles used watercolor although he also painted in oil and pastels. During the last years before his retirement when he moved to Woodstock...

Portrait of Jesus and Sacred Heart by John Paul Chase (Dillinger Associate)
Located in Soquel, CA
Delicate and detailed portrait of Jesus by notable outlaw John Paul Chase (American, 1901-1973). Jesus is looking directly at the viewer with a piercing gaze, holding a glowing sacred heart in his left hand. The other hand is gesturing toward the viewer, palm up, and the stigmata can be seen on his palm. Jesus is wearing a red garment with a blue cloak, the traditional symbolic colors for humanity and the heavens. It appears that this piece was painted over a previous composition. Signed "John Paul Chase" in the lower right. Presented in a mahogany frame with an oval opening. Board size: 31"H x 24"W Oval opening is 28.75" x 22" at widest points John Paul Chase (December 26, 1901 – October 5, 1973) was an American bank robber and Depression-era outlaw, who also became an artist. John Paul Chase was born in San Francisco, California. He left grade school to work on a ranch and later became an assistant machinist in a railroad yard. In 1926, Chase was fired from the railroad and was hired as a chauffeur for a professional gambler in Reno, Nevada. He spent the next few years as a bootlegger in Sausalito, San Rafael and San Francisco but was not involved in major crime until his association with Baby Face Nelson in the early 1930s, possibly in March 1932. It is generally agreed among crime historians that Reno was the most likely place where the two first became partners, Nelson having connections in the local underworld and frequently hid out there while in Chicago and the general Midwest. On October 23, 1933, he and Nelson robbed their first bank together in Brainerd, Minnesota escaping with $32,000. Along the way, they picked up a number of other outlaws including Charles Fisher...

GOUACHE NAPLES MARINE - Italian landscape gouache
Located in Napoli, IT
Gouache Nealopitane Marine, Italy, 2011, cm.22x33. Lacquered wooden frame. Delicious gouache made in 2011 by an unknown artist, using the method of the ancient masters of the landscape. Gouache paint is a non-permanent, water-based, opaque and opaque paint made opaque with the addition of a chalky white pigment. Invented in Europe in 500, it was initially used to carry out preliminary sketches of large oil works. It is characterized by a great ease of drafting and a lively color rendering, but it requires great skill, certainty in drawing and an extreme speed of execution, as it dries quickly and cannot be retouched. Precisely these characteristics give a particular liveliness and freshness to the works, characterized by light and opaque tones, very different from the glossy compactness of egg tempera and the transparency of the oil. Widely used in canvas paintings and miniatures. The technique was often used by landscape painters, such as Xavier Della Gatta, Pietro Fabris, Alessandro d'Anna...

High Plains Drifter
Located in Denver, CO
This is an unframed original painting on wood panel. Micheal Ousley is a native of Appalachia, originally from the coalfields of Southeastern Kentucky. Having traveled all around the Western coal towns of Virginia, West Virginia and the Blue Ridge as well, he has formed a deep connection to the mountains. “My father was a coal miner and many of my uncles and cousins worked in mining or farming. I tend to view my paintings as ballads for the rough living and hardscrabble existence found in the Central Appalachian Coal region. The Media has always jumped at the opportunity to show poverty and decay in the coalfields of Kentucky. I view my work as being built around a pathos and understanding of the downtrodden and discarded; a poetry for the underdog." Mike says, "I decided I wanted to take my painting back to the way I created images as a child, based on memory and simplified. My biggest inspiration is the visionary and Folk art of Kentucky and other Southern Folk artists. I spent a good deal of time in the Kentucky Folk...

Ocean Echo - Illuminated Paper Lanterns Adrift On Ocean Waves, Acrylic On Panel
Located in Chicago, IL
The fragility of the environment has always played an important role in Christina Haglid's work. As a child growing up on the East Coast, the ever changing seaside landscapes intrigued her. This fragile balance between nature and her subject matter is as delicate as a paper lantern set adrift upon the sea. "Ocean Echo" captures this delicate balance in a an exquisitely executed painting . Two paper lanterns emanate a warm glow, as they cast rays of gold upon the water's surface. This acrylic painting is on a cradled panel which is beautiful on its own or can be floated in a frame. Contact the gallery for framing options. Christina Haglid Ocean Current acrylic on panel 6h x 6w in 15.24h x 15.24w cm CMH043 Artist's Statement Tiny Sanctuaries There has always been an intersection between the process of writing and the act of painting in my work. It has somehow been my guide. In the last four years, during the making of this work, that connection intensified as I started writing short stories and flash fiction while taking online classes. I find the process of writing and painting so different in almost every way, but there is something freeing and generative in writing which helps my painting process. Or perhaps it's a reminder of what painting is for me - something intuitive that needs to be trusted. And what they do have in common is a desire to encapsulate and distill a single moment, a story, about the complexity of our emotions and experiences. At the heart of my work is the recurring depiction of perseverance, strength of will, and a subtle optimism. Symbolically through the objects, precarious situations depict a moment of possible difficulty, often involving the influence of nature. A paper crane left in the snow. A boat nearly filled to the brim, but not submerged and able to drain its own contents carefully. A slide alone at night...
