Jean Jacques Marie Castin
Portrait d'un Commandeur de la marine combat - Portrait of a Fighting Commander

Portrait d'un Commandeur de la marine combat ("Portrait of a Fighting Sea Commander ") Jean Jacques Marie Castin (1797-1869) Oil on canvas, signed and dated, 1848 Jean Jacques Marie Castin (1797-1869) was born in Roussillon,in the Luberon of France and died in Lyon, having spent the bulk of his life in the land of his birth. Castin chose his career as a painter very early in life.  He enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Artes in Lyon in 1823, where he studied under Bonnefond.  Jean Jacques Castin exhibited portraits as well as watercolor miniatures at the Salon de Lyon between 1833 and 1856. Jean Jacques Marie Castin's professional work, especially in the field of portraiture, was well received, and led to numerous commissions, particularly in the field of marine studies, ship portraiture, renditions of seagoing vessels, mariners and the like.  Portrait d'un Commandeur de la marine combat is a perfect example of the genre.  We see the Captain portrayed here in all his burnished finery, displaying proudly the medal his grateful nation of France has bestowed to him. The fighting Marine Commander depicted in the painting proudly displays his "Légion d'Honneur" -- This order, the highest French distinction, is awarded to all persons which distinguished themselves through civilian or military valour. The order was instituted early in the 19th century (1802) by the then First Consul, Napoleon Bonaparte, in 4 classes.  The Commandeur  alone was entitled to display the gold badge worn at neck on a scarlet ribbon. The French navy was vigorously revived under the Restoration and the government of Louis Philippe (the periods from 1815 to 1830 and 1830 to 1848). After Napoleon, the Restoration period (1814-15), very nearly lost everything and was on the verge of "liquidating" the entire navy, being unable to understand the importance - for France - of a fleet. The conquest of Algiers (1830) proved, however, that what remained of the French fleet could still be usefully and gloriously employed.   The field of marine portraiture was a most popular and profitable endeavor in the early to mid 1800's. The 1800's saw marine painting rejoin the mainstream of art, although many specialized painters continued to develop the "ship portrait" genre. Antoine Roux and his sons dominated maritime art in Marseille throughout the 1800s with detailed portraits of ships and maritime life. Arguably the greatest icon of Romanticism in art is Théodore Géricault's "The Raft of the Medusa." For the great J.M.W. Turner, painting the sea was a lifelong obsession. The paintings of Jean Jacques Marie Castin have been offered at the leading auction houses of the world, such as Sotheby's and Christie's.   "Portrait d'un Commandeur de la marine combat is a large painting."  The painting is in bright and superb condition.  It measures 32 inches x 27 1/2 framed, and 25 1/2 inches x 21 3/8 inches unframed. Gilt frame is custom made, in excellent condition, and very beautiful in its own right. Portrait d'un Commandeur de la marine combat is clearly and boldly signed and dated 1848 by the artist on in the lower left foreground, as shown. "Portrait d'un Commandeur de la marine combat" is truly a striking and impeccable work by Jean Jacques Marie Castin .
