JOHN LEOPARD EAST TEXAS 1850-1883 RUSK COUNTY POTTERY STONEWARE HENDERSON TEXAS
Located in San Antonio, TX
John Leopard (1800-1883) Pottery Rusk County Henderson Texas Pottery (1850-1883) 5 or 6 Gallon Ovoid East Texas Churn 18 inches tall 11 inches at widest point Utilitarian John Leopard (1800-1883) Pottery Rusk County Henderson Texas Pottery (1850-1883) One natural resource found in Rusk County provided an abundance of raw material for the development of industry in the county. When pioneers arrived in Rusk County in the early 1800's, they found a variety of clays suitable for brick making, tiles, statuary and pottery. Pottery making is one of the world's oldest crafts, with examples of pottery traced back as far as the 7th century BC. Amongst the earliest finds are artistic figures, images of people and animals, and household implements including breakers and dishes. Anthropologists often use the techniques and patterns found in ancient burial sites to form an accurate picture of society through the ages. Earthenware (jugs, churns, and vessels of all kinds) made in Rusk County found a ready market. Some of the early potters were Brown, Leopard, Rushton, Prothro and Russell. Many of Henderson's downtown buildings were made from bricks baked in the kiln of the Howard Brothers...

Industry and Idleness Plate 1: The Fellow 'Prentices at their Looms
Located in Bournemouth, Dorset
William Hogarth was an English painter and engraver, the outstanding British artist of his period. During his childhood, his father, a schoolteacher, was imprisoned for debt, and this early experience of the seamy side of life left a deep mark on Hogarth (much of his output is concerned with the contrast between success and failure, and he depicted prisons in several works). He trained as an engraver of silver plate and by 1720 had set up his own business in London, doing various kinds of commercial work. In his spare time he studied painting, first at the St Martin's Lane Academy and later under Sir James Thornhill, whose daughter he married in 1729. By the early 1730s he had achieved some success as a painter of conversation pieces and at about the same time he invented the idea of using a sequence of anecdotal pictures ‘similar to representations on the stage’ to point a moral and satirize social abuses. A set of 12 original engravings illustrating Industry and Idleness, after the drawings by William Hogarth, printed in 1833. The engravers are F Jordan, E Smith, C Armstrong, S Davenport, H Adlard, W H Worthington, H Fernell, A Duncan and F F Walker. The engravings, which are in excellent condition, would be mounted (matted) and ready to frame Edward Smith (fl. 1823-49) The landscape, figure, and portrait engraver Edward Smith may have been a native of Edinburgh but appears to have worked mostly in London. His earliest recorded plates...

Pair of Framed Chinese Ancestor Portraits, Ink and Pigment on Paper
Located in Chicago, IL
Believing that the departed continue to hold influence over the lives of the living, many Chinese households honor their ancestors in private family rituals, invoking their spirits for long life, health, and prosperity. Commemorative portraits, which came into vogue in the late Ming and Qing dynasties, were commissioned specifically for ancestor worship and were believed to house the spirits of the deceased. When properly cared for, one's ancestors were believed to be a powerful source of honor, protection, and good luck. This pair of ancestor portraits was hand-painted in the mid-19th century and beautifully depicts a Qing-dynasty couple. While some ancestral portraits offer a more stylized representation of one's ancestors, this particular pair is painted with incredible realism and life-like expressions. Rather than depict the pair in a regal hall wearing elaborate finery, the couple is shown in a quiet home environment, seated at either end of a square tea table. Their surroundings are minimal, practically undecorated, and they wear simple, matching blue silk robes...

Chinese Erotic Album Leaf, c. 1850
Located in Chicago, IL
Despite its explicit content, this intimate scene conveys a sense of tenderness and romantic love characteristic of Chinese erotic art. Known as “spring palace paintings,” these ink and watercolor illustrations imagined the sensual delights of courtly life. Taken from an album of erotic paintings, this framed leaf departs from a tradition of depicting lovers in risqué outdoor settings by picturing an amorous coupling in a distinctly Qing-dynasty interior. The uniquely detailed surroundings shed light on the prevailing aesthetic tastes in decor and furniture of 19th-century China. Note the carved wooden headrest, blue and white censer...

Tan Barbara la Seguridad Como el Delito - Etching by Francisco Goya - 1867
Located in Roma, IT
The custody is as barbarous as the crime (Tan barbara la seguridad como el delito) is an artwork realied by Francisco Goya y Lucientes, 1867. Paris: Delâtre, 1867. Etching and burin. cm. 10.5x8.4.Sheet 21x16.2. Excellent proof of III state and first edition after the appearance of the letter and the bevel of the plate, published in the Gazette des Beau-Arts, vol. XXII, p. 196. Ref. Harris 26 Intact sheet with wide margins. Slight exposure yellowing around image. Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (Fuendetodos, March 30, 1746 - Bordeaux, April 16, 1828) was a Spanish painter and engraver. Considered the pioneer of modern art, he was one of the greatest Spanish painters who lived between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His paintings, drawings and etchings of him reflected the ongoing historical upheavals and influenced the most important contemporary and following century painters. Goya is often referred to as the last of the old masters and the first of the moderns. Born into a middle-class family in 1746 in Aragon, he was a pupil of painting from the age of 14 to José Luzán y Martínez, later moving to Madrid to study with Anton Raphael Mengs. In 1786 he became court painter to the Spanish crown and this first part of his career was characterized by numerous portraits of members of the Spanish aristocracy and royal family, as well as by the production of rococo tapestries for the royal palace. In 1793 he suffered from an undiagnosed serious illness which left him deaf, after which his work became progressively darker and more pessimistic. His subsequent paintings seem to reflect a bleak vision of existence, which contrasts with his resounding social ascent: in 1799, in fact, he became Primer Pintor de Cámara (First Court Painter), the highest rank for a Spanish court painter . In late 1799, commissioned by Godoy, he completed his Maja desnuda, a remarkably bold nude for the time and clearly inspired by the style of Diego Velázquez. In the early 19th century he painted The Family of Charles IV, again influenced by Velázquez. In 1807, Napoleon led the Grand Army in the Peninsular War against Spain. During the conflict Goya remained in Madrid and, although he never expressed his thoughts in public, it seems that these facts affected him deeply, as can be seen from some of his works such as The Disasters of War, The 2nd of May 1808, The 3rd May 1808. Other works of his maturity include a wide variety of paintings concerning madness, asylums, witches, fantastic creatures, and religious and political corruption, which suggest that he feared for his mental and physical health. His later period culminates with the Black Paintings of 1819-1823, made in the Quinta del Sordo, his home on the outskirts of Madrid where he lived, disillusioned by political and social developments in Spain, in a situation of almost isolation. Finally, in 1824, Goya decided to abandon Spain to retire to the French city of Bordeaux...
