She was a world traveller, journeying to South America in the 1950s and to Central America, Japan, India, and the USSR in the 1960s.In the invitation to an exhibition of her works in 2003, one reads: "Hanna Seidel, observing the world through her camera lens, could capture everyday situtations in a unique manner."A touring exhibition containing 100 selected photographs entitled "From Rio Grande to Cape Horn" was organised by the Commerzbank and Lufthansa in 1965 and had its opening in the Cologne branch of the bank, Unter Sachsenhausen. At the time, the press described the works as being of "enchanting beauty and dignity."The exhibition of 1965 was curated by Hanna Seidel. These were from a show of her work. Influenced by Surrealism and Dada Photographs these are images of old children's dolls in various states of decay. These bear the influence of Hans Bellmer, Dora Maar and Man Ray. Jo Ann Krivin born in Reasnor, Iowa in 1933, daughter to Earl Guthrie and Lillie Cramer. She graduated from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, with a bachelor of music degree in voice. She became a copywriter for the CBS Television affiliate in Des Moines, and then a public relations writer for Columbia Records in New York. She later owned and directed The Cramer Gallery in Glen Rock, N.J. Krivin photographed many jazz musicians during the 1980s and 1990s, and published two books of her jazz photos, "25 Years of the Jazz Room at William Paterson University" and "Jazz Studies." Her jazz and doll portraits have been exhibited in group and solo shows, museums, university galleries, and jazz festivals. She was married for over 50 years to painter, musician, and educator Martin Krivin. One of the few women in the field of jazz photography, JoAnn Krivin documented the professional jazz scene from the late 1970's until the late 1990's photographing close to 700 musicians. Her works have been exhibited frequently in solo shows at festivals, museums and galleries across the country. She has served as a still photographer for New Jersey Public Television and has contributed to a variety of national jazz publications. Her book, Twenty Five Years of the Jazz Room at William Paterson University, was published in 2003. Woman artist with a feminist tinge to these photographs. For the past three decades, Stewart has served as senior staff photographer at Jazz at Lincoln Center, where Marsalis leads the orchestra and serves as artistic director. His jazz photographs highlight an intimate association with their subjects, that enables him to portray situations off-stage that otherwise would remain unknown to most of us. He works with film and digitally, using no artificial illumination other than stage lighting, and the prints employ subtle tones of black, grey, and white. Viewers are able to connect with the emotional range of the musicians and vocalists depicted and to grasp the deeply understood parallels between Stewart's vivid photographic forms and spaces, and the dramatic sounds and silences of jazz music. Frank Stewart initiated his career in jazz photography traveling with Ahmad Jamal and his group shortly after receiving a degree in photography from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art (1975). Stewart's focus on jazz was solidified from 1989-92 when he accompanied the Wynton Marsalis Septet. In the intervening years, Stewart had worked independently in clubs and at jazz events primarily in New York and Chicago. In 1992, he became the lead photographer for Jazz at Lincoln Center, traveling the globe with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Large and wonderful B & W photograph by American photographer Andreas Feininger (1906-1999). Photograph is of a gorilla rib cage. Printed in 1951, it measures 8ft. 10 in. x 10ft. Photograph is attached to linen and can be rolled for easy storage and shipping. Feininger was born in Paris, France, the eldest son of Julia Berg, a German Jew, and the American painter and art educator Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956). His paternal grandparents were the German violinist Karl Feininger (1844–1922) and the American singer Elizabeth Feininger, (née Lutz), who was also of German descent. His younger brother was the painter and photographer T. Lux Feininger (1910–2011) In 1908 the Feininger family moved to Berlin, and in 1919 to Weimar, where Lyonel Feininger took up the post of Master of the Printing Workshop at the newly formed Bauhaus art school.[2] Andreas left school at 16, in 1922, to study at the Bauhaus; he graduated as a cabinetmaker in April 1925. Afterwards he studied architecture, initially at the Staatliche Bauschule Weimar (State Architectural College, Weimar) and later at the Staatliche Bauschule Zerbst. (Zerbst is a city in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, about 20 km from Dessau, where the Bauhaus moved to in 1926.) The Feininger family moved to Dessau with the Bauhaus. In addition to continuing his architectural studies in Zerbst, Andreas developed an interest in photography and was given guidance by neighbour and Bauhaus teacher László Moholy-Nagy.[3] In 1936, he gave up architecture and moved to Sweden, where he focused on photography. At the age of 7 he began learning to play the violin, and after several years of study his teacher admitted that he had nothing more to teach him. Clergue was from a family of shopkeepers and could not afford to pursue further studies in a college or university school of music, such as a conservatory. In 1949, he learned the basics of photography. Four years later, at a corrida in Arles, he showed his photographs to Spanish painter Pablo Picasso who, though subdued, asked to see more of his work. Within a year and a half, young Clergue worked on his photography with the goal of sending more images to Picasso. During this period, he worked on a series of photographs of travelling entertainers, acrobats and harlequins, the Saltimbanques. He also worked on a series whose subject was carrion. On 4 November 1955 Lucien Clergue visited Picasso in Cannes, France. Their friendship lasted nearly 30 years until Picasso's death. Clergue's autobiographical book, Picasso My Friend, looks back on important moments of their relationship. In 1968, and with his friend Michel Tournier, Clergue founded the Rencontres d’Arles photography festival which is held annually in July in Arles. He exhibited his work at the festival during the years 1971–1973, 1975, 1979, 1982–1986, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1994, 2000, 2003 and 2007. Clergue also illustrated books, among them a book by writer Yves Navarre. Clergue took many photographs of the gypsies of southern France, and was instrumental in propelling the guitarist Manitas de Plata to fame. Clergue is perhaps most remembered and respected for his black-and-white studies of light, shadow, and form, featuring sinuous nude female bodies, zebra stripes of light, dynamic sand dunes, and seascapes extracted from the coast of the Camargue. Clergue's photographs are in the collections of numerous well-known museums and private collectors. His vintage photographs have been exhibited in over 100 solo exhibitions worldwide, with noted exhibitions such as in 1961, at the Museum of Modern Art New York, the last exhibition organized by Edward Steichen with Lucien Clergue, Bill Brandt and Yasuhiro Ishimoto. Museums with large collections of his work include The Fogg Museum at Harvard University and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. His work, Fontaines du Grand Palais (Fountains of the Grand Palais), is in Museo cantonale d'arte [de] of Lugano. His vintage photographs of Jean Cocteau are on permanent display at the Jean Cocteau Museum in Menton, France. In the U.S., an exhibition of the Cocteau photographs was premiered at Westwood Gallery, New York City. In 2007, the city of Arles honored Lucien Clergue and dedicated a retrospective collection of 360 of his photographs dating from 1953 to 2007. He also received the 2007 Lucie Award. Pablo Picasso (1881 –1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramic artist and theatre designer who spent most of his adult life in France. Regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, he is known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore. Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), and Guernica (1937), a dramatic portrayal of the bombing of Guernica by German and Italian air forces during the Spanish Civil War. Pablo Picasso (1881 –1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramic artist and theatre designer who spent most of his adult life in France. Regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, he is known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore. Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), and Guernica (1937), a dramatic portrayal of the bombing of Guernica by German and Italian air forces during the Spanish Civil War. After 1906, the Fauvist work of the slightly older artist Henri Matisse motivated Picasso to explore more radical styles, beginning a fruitful rivalry between the two artists, who subsequently were often paired by critics as the leaders of modern art.
