Cesar Baldaccini, Compression in the Night, from XXe Siecle, 1963
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph by Cesar Baldaccini (1921–1998), titled Compression dans la nuit (Compression in the Night), from the album XXe Siecle, Nouvelle serie, XXVe Annee N°22, Noel 1963, originates from the 1963 edition published by Societe Internationale d'Art XXe siecle, Paris, under the direction of Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1963. Compression dans la nuit reflects Cesar’s fascination with transformation, matter, and the poetic potential of industrial materials, encapsulating his lifelong dialogue between creation and destruction. Executed as a lithograph on velin paper, this work measures 12.5 x 9.75 inches. Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of Mourlot Freres, Paris. Artwork Details: Artist: Cesar Baldaccini (1921–1998) Title: Compression dans la nuit (Compression in the Night), from the album XXe Siecle, Nouvelle serie, XXVe Annee N°22, Noel 1963 Medium: Lithograph on velin paper Dimensions: 12.5 x 9.75 inches (31.75 x 24.77 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1963 Publisher: Societe Internationale d'Art XXe siecle, Paris, under the direction of Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, editeur, Paris Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the album XXe Siecle, Nouvelle serie, XXVe Annee N°22, Noel 1963, published by Societe Internationale d'Art XXe siecle, Paris, under the direction of Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, editeur, Paris; printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1963 About the Publication: Gualtieri di San Lazzaro's XXe Siecle (Twentieth Century) was one of the most influential art journals of the modern era, founded in Paris in 1938 as a platform for the greatest painters, sculptors, and writers of the 20th century. San Lazzaro, a visionary editor, critic, and champion of modernism, believed that art and literature should coexist as expressions of a shared human imagination. Under his direction, XXe Siecle became a cultural bridge between Europe and the wider world, publishing special issues devoted to leading figures such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, Calder, Miro, Kandinsky, and Leger. Each edition combined essays by renowned critics and poets with original lithographs and woodcuts printed by the foremost ateliers of Paris, Milan, and New York, including Mourlot, Curwen, and Amilcare Pizzi, creating a uniquely rich dialogue between text and image. Through XXe Siecle, San Lazzaro preserved the creative spirit of the avant-garde during and after World War II, championing freedom of expression and the evolution of abstraction, surrealism, and modern thought. Over nearly four decades, the journal shaped international taste and defined the intellectual landscape of postwar art publishing. Today, XXe Siecle remains celebrated for its extraordinary synthesis of art, literature, and design, an enduring testament to Gualtieri di San Lazzaro's belief that the visual arts are the soul of the modern age. About the Artist: Cesar Baldaccini (1921–1998), known simply as Cesar, was a groundbreaking French sculptor whose radical manipulation of industrial materials redefined the language of modern sculpture and secured his place among the most influential artists of the 20th century. Born in Marseille to Italian immigrant parents, he rose from modest beginnings to international acclaim through his inventive transformation of metal, scrap, and synthetic matter into dynamic works that fused poetry with power. After studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Marseille and Paris, he absorbed the innovations of modern masters such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. Like Picasso, Cesar sought to reinvent form through fragmentation; like Calder, he drew inspiration from the mechanics of movement; and like Duchamp, he challenged conventional definitions of art by transforming discarded materials into conceptual masterpieces. His early Fers soudes (welded iron sculptures) of the 1950s revealed his fascination with industrial detritus and the sculptural possibilities of found objects, while his Compressions of the 1960s—created by compacting automobiles and metal waste using hydraulic presses—became iconic symbols of modern industrial society’s power and fragility. These works embodied both destruction and creation, reflecting the aesthetic philosophy of the Nouveau Realisme movement, founded by Pierre Restany, of which Cesar was a central figure alongside Yves Klein, Arman, Jean Tinguely, and Niki de Saint Phalle. His Expansions of the late 1960s and 1970s, made by pouring and allowing liquid polyurethane to expand freely, introduced a radical new sculptural language of chance, energy, and transformation, blurring the boundary between control and spontaneity. With works such as Pouce (Thumb)—a monumental cast of his own thumb—Cesar turned the human form into a symbol of identity, individuality, and creative authorship, while his Human Imprints and Portraits Empreintes captured the immediacy of human presence in enduring bronze. His bold explorations of material and process anticipated later conceptual and environmental art, influencing generations of artists including John Chamberlain, Richard Serra, Anselm Kiefer, Jeff Koons, and Tony Cragg. Both a sculptural innovator and a cultural icon, Cesar designed the Cesar Award—France’s equivalent of the Academy Award—bridging avant-garde experimentation with popular recognition. His works are held in major institutions such as the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Tate Modern (London), the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection (Venice), reflecting his enduring global impact. Standing alongside Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, Cesar Baldaccini remains a towering figure of postwar modernism—a sculptor who turned compression, expansion, and transformation into metaphors of contemporary existence. His highest auction record was achieved by Compression "Ricard" (Compression Ricard) (1962), which sold for $2.41 million USD at Sotheby’s, Paris, on December 5, 2018, affirming his legacy as one of the most visionary, provocative, and collectible artists of the modern era. Futura: Futura 2000 is a contemporary American graffiti artist. Over the course of his career, he transitioned from making New York-based subway graffiti in the early 1970s, to exhibiting at Fun Gallery in the 1980s alongside major artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Kenny Scharf. He went on to collaborate with the punk band The Clash, designing their album art and performing live graffiti during their concerts. Today, McGurr’s work can be found in the collections of the Museo de Arte Moderna di Bologna, the Musée de Vire in France, and the Museum of the City of New York. Lee Quinones: Lee Quinones is an American-Puerto Rican artist known for the graffiti he made on New York subway cars during the 1970s and 1980s. 'European Landscape' —Mid-century American Surrealism
Located in Myrtle Beach, SC
Lawrence Kupferman, 'European Landscape', drypoint, edition 50, 1942. Signed, dated, titled, and numbered '7/50' in pencil. A superb, finely nuanced impression, on cream wove paper; the full sheet with margins (1 to 1 3/4 inches); in excellent condition. Image size 10 7/8 x 13 3/8 inches; sheet size 13 1/8 x 16 1/2 inches. Archivally matted to museum standards, unframed. An impression of this work is included in the permanent collection of the Syracuse University Art Museum. ABOUT THE ARTIST Lawrence Kupferman (1909 - 1982) was born in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston and grew up in a working-class family. He attended the Boston Latin School and participated in the high school art program at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In the late 1920s, he studied drawing under Philip Leslie Hale at the Museum School—an experience he called 'stultifying and repressive'. In 1932 he transferred to the Massachusetts College of Art, where he first met his wife, the artist Ruth Cobb. He returned briefly to the Museum School in 1946 to study with the influential expressionist German-American painter Karl Zerbe. Kupferman held various jobs while pursuing his artistic career, including two years as a security guard at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. During the 1930s he worked as a drypoint etcher for the Federal Art Project, creating architectural drawings in a formally realistic style—these works are held in the collections of the Fogg Museum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. In the 1940s he began incorporating more expressionistic forms into his paintings as he became progressively more concerned with abstraction. In 1946 he began spending summers in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he met and was influenced by Mark Rothko, Hans Hofmann, Jackson Pollock, and other abstract painters. At about the same time he began exhibiting his work at the Boris Mirski Gallery in Boston. In 1948, Kupferman was at the center of a controversy involving hundreds of Boston-area artists. In February of that year, the Boston Institute of Modern Art issued a manifesto titled 'Modern Art and the American Public' decrying 'the excesses of modern art,' and announced that it was changing its name to the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA). The poorly conceived statement, intended to distinguish Boston's art scene from that of New York, was widely perceived as an attack on modernism. In protest, Boston artists such as Karl Zerbe, Jack Levine, and David Aronson formed the 'Modern Artists Group' and organized a mass meeting. On March 21, 300 artists, students, and other supporters met at the Old South Meeting House and demanded that the ICA retract its statement. Kupferman chaired the meeting and read this statement to the press: “The recent manifesto of the Institute is a fatuous declaration which misinforms and misleads the public concerning the integrity and intention of the modern artist. By arrogating to itself the privilege of telling the artists what art should be, the Institute runs counter to the original purposes of this organization whose function was to encourage and to assimilate contemporary innovation.” The other speakers were Karl Knaths...

Pablo Picasso, Two Heads of Women, from Ovid's Metamorphoses, 1970 (after)
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph after Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), titled Deux tetes de femme (Two Heads of Women), originates from the rare 1970 folio Suite des reproductions des Eaux-fortes de Pablo Picasso pour illustrer les Metamorphoses d'Ovide. Published and printed by Production Edito-Service S.A., Le Grand-Saconnex, Canton of Geneve, in collaboration with Albert Skira, Geneve, this edition presents faithful reproductions of the original etchings created by Picasso in 1930–31 for the landmark illustrated book Les Metamorphoses d'Ovide. The composition exemplifies Picasso’s neoclassical grace and psychological depth, depicting two female profiles rendered with refined linework and sculptural simplicity inspired by antiquity. Executed on velin papier Verge fin blanc des papeteries de Bellerive, this lithograph measures 11.02 x 8.66 inches (28 x 22 cm) with an image size of 4.3 x 5.5 inches (10.9 x 14 cm). As issued, it is unsigned and unnumbered, consistent with the authorized 1970 publication format. This edition, produced under Albert Skira’s supervision, preserves the tonal clarity and linear precision of the original copper etchings created by Picasso for the 1931 deluxe edition of Les Metamorphoses d'Ovide, one of the most celebrated artist’s books of the 20th century. Artwork Details: Artist: After Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) Title: Deux tetes de femme (Two Heads of Women), from Suite des reproductions des Eaux-fortes de Pablo Picasso pour illustrer les Metamorphoses d'Ovide, 1970 Medium: Lithograph on velin papier Verge fin blanc des papeteries de Bellerive Dimensions: Paper size 11.02 x 8.66 inches (28 x 22 cm); Image size 4.3 x 5.5 inches (10.9 x 14 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued Date: 1970 (after the 1931 etchings) Publisher: Production Edito-Service S.A., Le Grand-Saconnex, Canton of Geneve Printer: Production Edito-Service S.A., in collaboration with Albert Skira, Geneve Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the 1970 folio Suite des reproductions des Eaux-fortes de Pablo Picasso pour illustrer les Metamorphoses d'Ovide, authorized by Albert Skira, Geneve Notes: Excerpted from the 1970 folio (translated from French): "The original edition of Les Metamorphoses d'Ovide, full text of the association, Guillaume Bude, established and translated by Georges Lafaye, is illustrated with XXX original etchings by Picasso. The draw, completed on October 25, 1931, in Paris, on the presses of Leon Pichon for typography, and by Louis Fort for the engravings, was limited to CXLV examples, all numbered in the press and signed by the artist. The edition included XXX examples on Japon blanc a la forme fabrique specialement par la manufacture imperiale, including V examples, numbered from I to V, each containing a sequel on Japon with remarks in bistre, a suite on Chine with remarks in black and an original drawing by the artist; XXV examples, numbered from VI to XXX, each containing a sequel on Japon with remarks in black; XCV examples, numbered from XXXI to CXXV, on verge de pur chiffon fabrique specialement a la main par les papeteries d'Arches; and CX non-commerce examples, numbered in Roman numerals from I to XX, reserved for the artist and collaborators. The coppers used to draw the illustrations were scratched by the artist in the presence of the publisher. This album has been presented to collectors and bibliophiles of the United States of America by Marie Harriman. This lithograph edition, 22 x 28 cm, was printed with Albert Skira's authorization on papier Verge fin blanc des papeteries de Bellerive." About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose extraordinary vision and restless creativity reshaped the trajectory of modern art. Born in Málaga, Spain, Picasso demonstrated exceptional talent from an early age, studying at the Royal Academy of San Fernando before settling in Paris, the artistic epicenter of the early 20th century. There, his pioneering spirit gave rise to groundbreaking movements, most notably Cubism, developed alongside Georges Braque, which revolutionized visual representation by deconstructing form and perspective. Over his prolific seven-decade career, Picasso’s work evolved through distinct stylistic periods—the Blue, Rose, African, and Classical phases—culminating in a body of art that embraced experimentation, emotional depth, and innovation. His influence and dialogue with fellow visionaries Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray shaped the foundation of modernism, while his legacy continues to resonate through the work of post-war and contemporary artists such as Banksy, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and Jasper Johns. Together, these artists collectively expanded the boundaries of art in the 20th and 21st centuries. Picasso’s staggering output of more than 20,000 works—spanning painting, sculpture, ceramics, drawing, and printmaking—embodies his belief that “art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” His creations are housed in the world’s foremost museums, including the Musée Picasso in Paris, MoMA in New York, the Guggenheim, and the Tate in London. The highest price ever paid for a Picasso artwork is approximately $179.4 million USD at Christie’s New York in 2015 for Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O) (1955). About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose extraordinary vision and restless creativity reshaped the trajectory of modern art.
