NICOLAS DE STAEL (1914-1955) was a French painter of Russian origin known for his use of a thick impasto and his highly abstract landscape painting. He also worked with collage, illustration and textiles. Known for his abstract landscapes and still lifes that uniquely blend colour, form and texture, Nicolas de Staël was fascinated by the world’s many spectacles and documented them through his art. De Staël was born in 1914 into an aristocratic family in Saint Petersburg, Russia. His father served as a cavalry general under Tsar Nicholas II and the family was forced to flee after the Russian Revolution. Both Nicolas’s parents died in the early 1920s, meaning he and his siblings were raised by a foster family in Brussels where he would begin his formal art education at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts. De Staël’s early work was influenced by the European avant-garde movements of the early 20th century, including Cubism and Fauvism. However, he soon developed his own distinctive style with thick impasto and a bold use of colour. His early paintings, often sombre in tone, gradually evolved into more vibrant and dynamic compositions, reflecting his growing interest in the emotional and expressive potential of colour and form. In 1938 de Staël had moved to France, where he became an integral part of the post-war Parisian art scene. Having worked initially in the atelier of Fernand Léger, de Staël’s circle of friends came to include Sonia Delaunay, Le Corbusier and Jean Arp, who encouraged his tendencies towards abstract work. His work during this period marked a significant departure from traditional representation, moving towards abstraction while maintaining a strong sense of structure and form. De Staël's paintings from this era showcase his ability to balance abstraction with figuration, using broad, gestural strokes and a vibrant palette to convey movement and energy. Sonia Delaunay was known for her vivid use of color and her bold, abstract patterns, breaking down traditional distinctions between the fine and applied arts as an artist, designer and printmaker. Born Sarah Stern on November 14, 1885 in Gradizhsk, Ukraine, she was adopted in 1890 by her maternal uncle, Henri Terk, a lawyer in St. Petersburg, where she grew up, exposed to music and art, and learning several foreign languages. In 1903, she moved to Germany to study drawing with Ludwig Schmidt-Reutler (1863–1909) at the Karlsruhe academy of fine arts; Arnold Schoenberg (1874–1951), composer-to-be, was among her classmates there. In 1905, she traveled to Paris where she attended art classes at the Académie de la Palette, learned printmaking from Rudolf Grossman (1889–1941), and met Amédée Ozenfant (1886–1966), André Dunoyer de Segonzac (1884–1974), and Jean-Louis Boussingault (1883–1943). Sonia spent much of her time at exhibitions and galleries in Paris, which showed works by Paul Cézanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Pierre Bonnard, and Edouard Vuillard, as well as Les Fauves, Henri Matisse and André Derain. She did, however, maintain contact with Germany, exhibiting at the Galerie Der Sturm, Berlin, in 1913, 1920 and 1921. During her first year in Paris, Sonia met the German collector and art-dealer, Wilhelm Uhde (1874–1947), whom she married on December 5, 1908, and whose Montparnasse gallery, the Galerie Notre-Dame des Champs, showed her first solo exhibition. Through Uhde, Sonia encountered many painters, including Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Maurice de Vlaminck, and Robert Delaunay (1885–1941). In 1910, Sonia divorced Uhde by mutual agreement, married Delaunay that same year, and gave birth to their son, Charles, in January 1911. Together Sonia and Robert Delaunay pursued the study of color, influenced by theories of Michel-Eugène Chevreul (1786–1889). The gallery acquired this historic 1963 invitation and then Jim Dine graciously signed it years later in black marker - as he was/is the only artist of the entire group who was still alive. We know of no other one in the entire world with any hand signature by any of the artists exhibited. This very rare invitation/poster was published on the occasion of this important 1963 exhibition of American painting at the Galleria Ariete, Mostra n. 94, in Milan, Italy. The roster of artists represented is literally a Who's Who of American Abstract Expressionists of the era. The Galleria dell'Ariete in Milan, Italy, opened in 1955, and ran an active exhibition until its closing in the mid-1980s. It was among the most important galleries in Italy for contemporary art, and had extensive connections with dealers, collectors, artists, and critics in Europe, the United States, and Japan. Sheet size 57" x 38", image size 49" x 32" Signed Bottom right in pencil, editioned in pencil bottom left With a full sheet authenticity certificate, dated 1964 This is a fabulous original Limited Edition Lithograph, completely of its time when artists in Paris were pushing boundaries and trying to bring about new styles. The influence of artists like Matisse can be seen and Minaux was working alongside artists such as Picasso and with Bernard Buffet to reject ideas of Abstract painting. The text that accompanies the lithograph can be seen in the image of the certificate and is in French. The translation that follows on the certificate of Provenance gives an in depth description of this compelling still life: 'It is a singularly balanced art that that of André MINAUX, a typically French painting, made of power of clarity and nobility, in the tradition of our great modern masters as well as those of past centuries. And yet this painting under the hieratic appearance of the attitudes is not a wise painting, but on the contrary terribly dynamic, in which the passion and the virulence of the feelings are contained only by the simplicity and the purity of the forms. Each work of André Minaux is a miracle of balance between bubbling joy; joy of painting, joy of living; which animates the artist, and the voluntary serenity of the colors and volumes by which he translates his vision of beauty and grandeur. André Minaux's painting, full of a life in perpetual becoming, is the great and worthy expression of an art continually in evolution which moves without aggressiveness, but not without struggles, towards its final ends. And this painting, painting of an artist in full possession of all his means, of an extremely solid technique, and of a perfect trade is however that of a young person. Forty-one years is youth for a painter and at this age André Minaux, already recognized as one of the masters of the young French figurative school, has a future as brilliant and promising as behind him a long history of hard work and success. André Minaux is Parisian, born September 5, 1923. Very young he feels attracted to the graphic arts, he prepares and enters the School of Decorative Arts, but pure painting attracts him irresistibly and it is to her that he soon devotes himself exclusively. His young and great talent makes him quickly noticed. He first exhibited at the Salon des Sous de Trente Ans and later at other salons: des Indépendants, d'Automne, then at the Salon de Mai and at the Tuileries. In 1948 first private exhibition in Paris, others will follow in 1951, 1956 and 1957. In the meantime two exhibitions equal ment were devoted to him in London in 1953 and 1957. His last was a very important exhibition in 1963 at the David and Garnier Gallery in Paris. In 1949 at the 'Ecole de Paris', Galerie Charpentier, he had already won the Critics' Prize. Its reputation extends abroad thanks to numerous demonstrations of groups in England, Germany, Australia, Canada, Japon, U.S. A., etc... The Museum of Modern Art in Paris, several museums in the provinces, the Tate Gallery in London, have works by André Minaux, and his paintings can be found in major collections in Paris, London, New York, Tokyo, Stockholm, etc. ... Its title, "Rrose Sélavy in the Wilson-Lincoln System", refers to Duchamp's Green Box note describing a two-way, changeable portrait of presidents Abraham Lincoln and Woodrow Wilson. Rrose Selavy is, famously, Marcel Duchamp's pseudonym and alter ego. Duchamp died before Takiguchi's book was completed, so this print is one of the very last graphic works that has been hand signed by Marcel Duchamp. It was published in Japan, and is a very elusive work stateside. Another edition of this work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. In 1904, he joined his artist brothers, Jacques Villon and Raymond Duchamp-Villon, in Paris, where he studied painting at the Académie Julian until 1905. Duchamp’s early works were Post-Impressionist in style. He exhibited for the first time in 1909 at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne in Paris. His paintings of 1911 were directly related to Cubism but emphasized successive images of a single body in motion. In 1912, he painted the definitive version of Nude Descending a Staircase; this was shown at the Salon de la Section d’Or of that same year and subsequently created great controversy at the Armory Show in New York in 1913. Duchamp’s radical and iconoclastic ideas predated the founding of the Dada movement in Zurich in 1916. By 1913, he had abandoned traditional painting and drawing for various experimental forms, including mechanical drawings, studies, and notations that would be incorporated in a major work, The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (1915–23; also known as The Large Glass). In 1914, Duchamp introduced his readymades—common objects, sometimes altered, presented as works of art—which had a revolutionary impact upon many painters and sculptors. In 1915, Duchamp traveled to New York, where his circle included Katherine Dreier and Man Ray, with whom he founded the Société Anonyme in 1920, as well as Louise and Walter Arensberg, Francis Picabia, and other avant-garde figures. After playing chess avidly for nine months in Buenos Aires, Duchamp returned to France in the summer of 1919 and associated with the Dada group in Paris.
