Andy Warhol
Electric Chair

1972

About the Item

"Electric Chair" F. & S. 81, is a screenprint in colors on wove paper by Andy Warhol. The work is signed verso. This piece is number 43 from an edition of 250 + 50 AP, and is one from a portfolio of 10 screenprints on paper. The framed size is 41 x 53 3/8 x 1 1/4 inches. The publisher is Bruno Bischofberger, Zurich, Switzerland. The original image that Warhol used to make his "Electric Chair" works came from a press photo from Sing Sing prison in New York from 1953. The work is part of Warhol's "Death and Disaster" series which he began in 1962. He depicted terrible things such as car crashes and suicides, with the belief that reproducing a horrible image over and over removes the gruesomeness and reduces the image to something from the everyday. In this series, death is a part of life that we encounter daily. "Electric Chair" is a fascinating work within the "Death and Disaster" series as the chair sits alone and unoccupied which ‘represents death as absence and silence’.
