Michel Fingesten. of an Austrian weaver father and a Jewish mother originally from Trieste. At the age of 16 he studied at the Vienna Academy together with Oskar Kokoschka From 1902 to 1906 he wandered around America, and then Australia, to then arrive
in Palermo in 1907. He traveled up the peninsula passing through Trieste and returning to Germany, settling first in Munich in Franz von Stuck's studio, practicing caricature and small format graphics and then in Berlin.
In 1913 he began to engrave. He returned to Italy in 1935 to visit his maternal relatives from Trieste and remained there due to the racial persecutions to which the Jews in Silesia were subjected, settling in Milan. In this period he engraved about 500 exlibris

Pioneering female illustrator Gwenda Morgan creates an exuberantly complex image of a squad of broom-riding - pointed-hatted witches with black cats in tow. They fly through an inky black moonlit sky and are witnessed by only a rooftop owl. With the simple means of black and white, Morgan has rendered a highly charged composition that pluses with electricity. The whole image is on the cusp of being abstract while being representational. It is brilliantly designed with great attention to detail and is evocative of a sorcerer's malignant powers. Unframed. not signed
Printed from the original block as part of the suite of 8 prints that accompanied the limited edition book Diary of a Land Girl, Whittington Press, 2000. The suite of prints was included with the first 50 copies of the book, and a further 8 suites were printed, from which this print comes.
Gwenda Morgan (1 February 1908 – 1991) was a British wood engraver. She lived in the town of Petworth in West Sussex.
Early life
Morgan was born in Petworth, her father having moved there to work at the ironmongers, Austen & Co, of which he later became proprietor. He was the son of a Welsh-born military farrier.
Education
Following school in Petworth and at Brighton and Hove High School, Morgan, studied at Goldsmiths' College of Art in London from 1926. From 1930 she attended the Grosvenor School of Modern Art in Pimlico where she was taught and strongly influenced by the principal, Iain Macnab. The Grosvenor School was a progressive art school and the championing of wood engraving and linocuts fitted with its democratic approach to the arts.

Woodcut is a type of relief print that is made by carving a block of wood with a knife or gouge. The surface is then inked with a roller and pressed onto paper. Unlike with intaglio techniques, the section of the surface that has not been incised is what appears in the print.
Woodcut printmaking is one of the oldest printing techniques, first used in 9th-century China, mastered by Albrecht Dürer during the Northern Renaissance and famously associated with the ukiyo-e artists of 17th- and 18th-century Japan. (For concision, power and delight, it’s hard to beat a Japanese woodblock print, the product of an artistic tradition that is aging very well indeed.)
Elsewhere, German Expressionists like Emil Nolde and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner embraced the medium for its bold, graphic power in the 1920s, and artists continue to use it today.
OK, so what is the difference between a woodcut print and an intaglio print?
“[Intaglio] is the opposite of relief printing — woodcut, linoleum cut, letterpress, and rubber or metal stamping,” says Rhea Fontaine of Paulson Fontaine Press. “With relief printing, the raised areas of the printing surface are inked and printed, while the areas that have been cut away do not pick up the ink. Often these prints are made by hand.”
