Post-Impressionist Prints and Multiples

POSTIMPRESSIONIST STYLE

In the revolutionary wake of Impressionism, artists like Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin advanced the style further while firmly rejecting its limitations. Although the artists now associated with Postimpressionist art did not work as part of a group, they collectively employed an approach to expressing moments in time that was even more abstract than that of the Impressionists, and they shared an interest in moving away from naturalistic depictions to more subjective uses of vivid colors and light in their paintings.

The eighth and final Impressionist exhibition was held in Paris in 1886, and Postimpressionism — also spelled Post-Impressionism — is usually dated between then and 1905. The term “Postimpressionism” was coined by British curator and art critic Roger Fry in 1910 at the “Manet and the Postimpressionists” exhibition in London that connected their practices to the pioneering modernist art of Édouard Manet. Many Postimpressionist artists — most of whom lived in France — utilized thickly applied, vibrant pigments that emphasized the brushstrokes on the canvas.

The Postimpressionist movement’s iconic works of art include van Gogh’s The Starry Night (1889) and Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884). Seurat’s approach reflected the experimental spirit of Postimpressionism, as he used Pointillist dots of color that were mixed by the eye of the viewer rather than the hand of the artist. Van Gogh, meanwhile, often based his paintings on observation, yet instilled them with an emotional and personal perspective in which colors and forms did not mirror reality. Alongside Mary Cassatt, Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Gauguin, the Dutch painter was a pupil of Camille Pissarro, the groundbreaking Impressionist artist who boldly organized the first independent painting exhibitions in late-19th-century Paris.

The boundary-expanding work of the Postimpressionist painters, which focused on real-life subject matter and featured a prioritization of geometric forms, would inspire the Nabis, German Expressionism, Cubism and other modern art movements to continue to explore abstraction and challenge expectations for art.

She was raised, however, in the loving care of her grandparents Paulémile Pissarro, Camille’s youngest son, and his wife Yvonne, in Clécy, Normandy. From a young age, Lélia’s interest in drawing and painting was nurtured by her grandfather while she sat beside him at his easel, captivated. He taught her the fundamental Impressionist and Post-Impressionist techniques he had learnt from his father and brothers before him and watched as her skills blossomed rapidly. Standing readily on the shoulders of giants, Lélia sold her first painting to New York art dealer Wally Findlay, when she was only four years of age. When Lélia turned 11 she moved to Paris to live with her parents where, with the guiding support of her father’s teachings she began to broaden her skill sets. Under the watchful eye of her father Hughes Claude Pissarro, she became exposed to new environments and learnt to experiment with abstract styles and subjects. At age 14 Lélia submitted some of these works to the exhibition ‘Salon de la Jeune Peinture’ at the Luxembourg Museum in Paris. Being underage, however, she had to submit these works secretly under the pseudonym Rachel Manzana Pomié. With her parents dividing their time between France and California, Lélia found herself moving between Tours, Paris and San Francisco, all the while studying fine art and psychology at the University des Beaux Arts. She eventually settled in Paris to teach art at the Moria School and study oil painting conservation under the guidance of a teacher from the Louvre museum. During this time she began to present her work in solo exhibitions in Paris, Lyon, Mulhouse and Rennes. In 1988 Lélia married English art dealer David Stern and moved to London. Their three children Kalia, Lyora and Dotahn, all paved their own way in the art world. From 1995 Lélia participated in a series of exhibitions entitled Pissarro – The Four Generations, which were held in galleries in London, Tel Aviv, Boston, Austin, San Francisco, Cleveland, Milwaukee and Los Angeles as well as a number of museums in Japan in 1998 and the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 2000. In 1999 Lélia also became one of the founders of the Sorteval Press, a group of artists dedicated to developing techniques in etching and printmaking. Their first exhibition took place at the Mall Gallery in London. In 2005 following a long break in painting because of cancer, Lélia started a journey into modern art creating a number of different series: Circles, Shoes, Animals, exploring these until she reached the point of abstraction and minimalism. Excerpted from the folio, Paul Gauguin and Emil Bernard at Pont-Aven, Brittany, in 1888, each made a bas-relief, wooden panel to decorate a piece of furniture for a friend. In order to keep a record of their designs, a few inked impressions were made on paper. The illustration at left is a reproduction of a print which is possibly one of the above mentioned. It is further possible that this experiment later gave Gauguin the idea of making woodcuts. Just as his work in painting expressed a revolt against the overemphasis on factual representation of the nineteenth century in favor of decorative pattern and color, so also his woodcuts leaned strongly to the same side of the balance. Ten of the cuts reproduced (all excepting Soyez Amoureuses and Changement de Residence), which constitute the whole of his best known series, were made at Pont-Aven beginning in the fall of 1894, after Gauguin's return from his first trip to Tahiti and after he broke his ankle. They were at first roughly cut with a common carpenter's gouge, and the flat surfaces sandpapered and engraved with a sharp in-strument, perhaps an engraver's burin. A few trial proofs were printed in black ink only. Then the hollows were deepened with a woodcutter's gouge and highlights were added. Sheet size 57" x 38", image size 49" x 32" Signed Bottom right in pencil, editioned in pencil bottom left With a full sheet authenticity certificate, dated 1964 This is a fabulous original Limited Edition Lithograph, completely of its time when artists in Paris were pushing boundaries and trying to bring about new styles. The influence of artists like Matisse can be seen and Minaux was working alongside artists such as Picasso and with Bernard Buffet to reject ideas of Abstract painting. The text that accompanies the lithograph can be seen in the image of the certificate and is in French. The translation that follows on the certificate of Provenance gives an in depth description of this compelling still life: 'It is a singularly balanced art that that of André MINAUX, a typically French painting, made of power of clarity and nobility, in the tradition of our great modern masters as well as those of past centuries. And yet this painting under the hieratic appearance of the attitudes is not a wise painting, but on the contrary terribly dynamic, in which the passion and the virulence of the feelings are contained only by the simplicity and the purity of the forms. Each work of André Minaux is a miracle of balance between bubbling joy; joy of painting, joy of living; which animates the artist, and the voluntary serenity of the colors and volumes by which he translates his vision of beauty and grandeur. André Minaux's painting, full of a life in perpetual becoming, is the great and worthy expression of an art continually in evolution which moves without aggressiveness, but not without struggles, towards its final ends. And this painting, painting of an artist in full possession of all his means, of an extremely solid technique, and of a perfect trade is however that of a young person. Forty-one years is youth for a painter and at this age André Minaux, already recognized as one of the masters of the young French figurative school, has a future as brilliant and promising as behind him a long history of hard work and success. André Minaux is Parisian, born September 5, 1923. Very young he feels attracted to the graphic arts, he prepares and enters the School of Decorative Arts, but pure painting attracts him irresistibly and it is to her that he soon devotes himself exclusively. His young and great talent makes him quickly noticed. He first exhibited at the Salon des Sous de Trente Ans and later at other salons: des Indépendants, d'Automne, then at the Salon de Mai and at the Tuileries. In 1948 first private exhibition in Paris, others will follow in 1951, 1956 and 1957. In the meantime two exhibitions equal ment were devoted to him in London in 1953 and 1957. His last was a very important exhibition in 1963 at the David and Garnier Gallery in Paris. In 1949 at the 'Ecole de Paris', Galerie Charpentier, he had already won the Critics' Prize. Its reputation extends abroad thanks to numerous demonstrations of groups in England, Germany, Australia, Canada, Japon, U.S. A., etc... The Museum of Modern Art in Paris, several museums in the provinces, the Tate Gallery in London, have works by André Minaux, and his paintings can be found in major collections in Paris, London, New York, Tokyo, Stockholm, etc. ...
