Alexander McQueen for sale on 1stDibs

British fashion designer Lee Alexander McQueen, the original creative engine behind the Alexander McQueen label, was beloved for his expert tailoring and theatrical runway shows. After his suicide in 2010, fans left tributes to the man and his talents outside Alexander McQueen boutiques worldwide. Record-breaking crowds visited the posthumous retrospective of the designer’s work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Victoria and Albert in London.

The inspirations for vintage Alexander McQueen bags, dresses, jackets and other items came from many quarters — film, music, current events, history, his heritage and fashions of the past. The designer's runway presentations were not just displays of clothing but were personal expressions of the zeitgeist, often touching on our cultural anxieties and concerns. McQueen’s own thoughts and feelings about love, death, gender, genocide, colonialism, global warming and the extinction of species all appear in his pieces.

McQueen certainly shook up fashion; he was a born Rottweiler. His upbringing on a council estate in north London played a part, but his family was close and supportive, not dysfunctional. He was proud of his Scottish heritage: He was a defiant fashion warrior. His historical themes and shows — such as “Highland Rape,” 2002, which was inspired by England’s “rape of Scotland,” as McQueen called it — always invoked powerful reactions from his audience of fashion pros.

“What you see in the work is the person himself. And my heart is in my work,” McQueen told Harper’s Bazaar in 2007.

It is perhaps this heart, and the heart’s exposure, that drew the crowds and made McQueen's creations both popular and emotionally resonant. Because the work was personal and thus layered with feeling, the motifs — decorative embellishments and fabric choices — have meaning. In other words, in McQueen’s oeuvre, plaid is more than simply a pattern.

Find vintage Alexander McQueen fashion and accessories — including the designer's coveted bags and comfortable, stretchy jersey knit dresses and gowns — on 1stDibs.

Fashion of the 1990s

For fashion lovers, the 1990s have become associated with styles adopted by today’s supermodels and influencers, who never wear the same thing twice. And because fast fashion didn’t yet exist, the design associated with 1990s fashion — vintage '90s handbags, clothing and accessories — has a quality appreciated by the millennial generation: authenticity.

If there was one concept unifying fashion in the 1990s, it was the lean silhouette. “Fashion is a game of proportion,” Alexander Fury wrote in the New York Times in 2016. “Narrow-shouldered and narrow-hipped, the ’90s were skinny.”

If it takes a practiced eye to identify that single concept, that’s because in truth, ’90s fashion was many things to many people. After the 1980s era of strong-shouldered working women, glossy aerobicized bodies and Madonna, fashion branched out.

The industry gained momentum from big-money relaunches of the great Paris houses Dior, Givenchy and Balenciaga, rescued at long last from the constraints of licensing. Japan and Belgium gave fashion new avant-garde ideas to play with. From America came denim, minimalism, '90s grunge fashion and hip-hop. From Italy came sex appeal. And Prada.

For the colorful corsets of her 1990 Portrait collection, audacious British designer Dame Vivienne Westwood drew on 18th-century oil paintings — her models donned the pearl choker necklaces that have become a social media star and a favorite of influencers and fashion lovers all over the world. For a jacket-and-shorts suit from her Fall/Winter 1996–97 Storm in a Teacup line, the designer used the extreme asymmetry of a tartan mash-up to confront, according to Westwood, “the horror of uniformity and minimalism.”

“The ethos of the time was, you could have style, you could be into all kinds of cool stuff. It wasn’t about money, it wasn’t about status,” says Katy Rodriguez, cofounder of Resurrection. In contrast, “our last 10 years have seen the domination of nonstop luxury, money and status.”

Vintage 1990s Chanel bags, for example, are among the most prized of the brand’s offerings — at Newfound Luxury, proprietor L. Kiyana Macon has "clients who only buy ’90s Chanel because they recognize that it is the best quality.”

Things were different in the ’90s, and the difference is reflected in the clothes. Pull up any recent “How to Do the 1990s” fashion article (or look at photos of current supermodels Gigi, Kendall and Bella), and you’ll see iconic '90s outfits — knee socks, cardigans, fanny packs, fishnet stockings, slip dresses, flannel shirts and combat boots.

Rodriguez has recently noticed something similar happening. Before COVID, customers searched 1990s stock “for very sexy Galliano, Dior, Cavalli — that kind of thing,” she explains, noting that just a few months ago, “people were posting [on social media] the poshest things they could.” Now, in the age of shutdown, “that would just look out of touch.”

Instead, people are looking for “things that are cool but also easy and comfortable, not necessarily super-luxe,” Rodriguez continues. They’re “heading back to the more avant-garde, anti-fashion designers, like Helmut Lang, [Martin] Margiela and [Ann] Demeulemeester.”

Late designer Franco Moschino shocked and titillated the ’80s fashion elite with his whimsical, irreverent parodies of bourgeois finery. Whether emblazoning a sober blazer with smiley faces or embellishing a skirt suit with cutlery, Moschino rendered high style with a hearty wink. He famously said, “If you can’t be elegant, at least be extravagant” — words that, with all due respect to Susan Sontag, epitomize the essence of camp.

Vintage Moschino pants, jackets and other '90s Moschino garments remain so bold and fresh today that even the house's former creative director, Jeremy Scott, drew on the brand's past and the pop culture of the decade for his debut collection in 2014.

Find vintage 90s dresses, skirts, sweaters and other clothing and accessories on 1stDibs — shop Thierry Mugler, Miuccia Prada, Jean Paul Gaultier and more today.

Finding the Right clothing for You

From museum-worthy vintage Oscar de la Renta evening dresses and jackets to audacious T-shirts and trousers from provocative punk designer Vivienne Westwood, one thing is abundantly clear: If the clothing available on 1stDibs could talk, it would certainly make a statement.

For fashion lovers, the 1990s have become associated with styles adopted by today’s supermodels and influencers — think Galliano and Cavalli — but maybe ‘80s accessories are among your (guilty?) pleasures. Playful, boldly colored coats and outerwear from Moschino and other titans of the era can take a simpler ensemble to the next level, while chic and practical suits from the likes of Christian Dior and Chanel remain classic for haute couture advocates and beyond. By exploring the vast array of vintage collections on these pages, you can transform your closet into a retreat that is as retro as it is royal.

Velvet cocktail dresses and silk evening gowns designed by French-born American couturiere Pauline Trigère — who dressed Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor — have proven timeless since their mid-century debut, while an overcoat by Alexander McQueen is the perfect finishing touch. In fact, an emerald one stays in rotation for Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge.

Those seeking modern high-fashion brands are also in luck. Turn your day-to-day into a runway with selections from Dolce & Gabbana, Yves Saint Laurent and Versace or complete that fresh look with stunning footwear classics from the likes of Gucci and Christian Louboutin. The future — and glamorous past — of fashion is yours for the wearing.

Build your collection of covetable and iconic vintage garments by shopping on 1stDibs. No matter where you roam, our diverse apparel and accessories will keep you covered in the hottest styles and comfiest black hoodie imaginable.

Questions About Alexander McQueen
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
No, Alexander McQueen shoes do not usually run small. Most people find that they fit true to size. Consult the official size chart on the brand's website to determine which shoe size is right for you. Find a selection of Alexander McQueen shoes on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
The best way to clean Alexander McQueen sneakers depends on the material. Generally, you can wipe off surface dirt with a dry microfiber cloth. Tackle stubborn stains with a cleaning product designed for the material, such as a leather or suede cleaner. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of Alexander McQueen sneakers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
You can authenticate Alexander McQueen sneakers in a variety of ways. One option is to examine the stitching that connects the upper to the outsole. On genuine sneakers, the stitching stops at the point where the sole texture shifts from smooth to rough. Stitching often extends past that point on replicas. Alternatively, check the back of the tongue. Genuine Alexander McQueen designs show the style name and size in the same dark gold numbers toward the center. The fonts may vary in color and size or appear closer to the top of the tongue on fakes. You'll find a range of expertly vetted Alexander McQueen sneakers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
A simple way to authenticate an Alexander McQueen scarf is to examine the Alexander McQueen logo printed along one edge. From the top of the scarf, the logo appears the same color as the rest of the print. When viewed from underneath, the text appears black. The underside logo has a faded quality like the print on a fake. On 1stDibs, find a collection of expertly vetted Alexander McQueen scarves.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
To begin to tie Alexander McQueen sneakers in the brand's trademark style, point the shoe away from you and pass the lace from the bottom left eyelet through the center tab and out through the upper right eyelet. Then, take the end of the lace on the left side and pull it across the shoe through the bottom right eyelet. From there, thread through the second-lowest left-hand eyelet. Cross the lace over to the bottom right-hand eyelet and continue in this fashion until you lace it all the way. Then, tie the ends in a bow.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
To wash a silk Alexander McQueen scarf correctly, follow the care instructions printed on the tag. In most cases, the brand recommends washing their silk scarves by hand with a mild detergent and then hanging to dry. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Alexander McQueen scarves.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
You can wear an Alexander McQueen scarf in many ways. One popular option is to fold the scarf into a triangle and then wear it with the point filling the neckline of your top or dress or turned to the side so that it drapes over one shoulder. Alternatively, fold it into a slim rectangle and tie in a bow. You'll find a collection of Alexander McQueen scarves on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
Yes, Alexander McQueen Oversized sneakers typically are true to size for most people. The name Oversized does not refer to the fit of the shoe. Rather, it describes the chunky proportions of the sole. Find a range of Alexander McQueen sneakers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
Alexander McQueen fashions, shoes and accessories have a signature style that is eclectic. The brand borrows elements from the Roman, Gothic and Victorian eras and frequently incorporates dark colors, heavy fabrics and romantic embellishments like lace. Its skull-patterned scarves and oversized sneakers are among their most well-known designs. Find a large selection of Alexander McQueen on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022

Yes, Alexander McQueen trainers are unisex. The designs can suit both men and women. However, the brand divides their shoes by men's and women's on their website and lists only one set of sizes to simplify shopping. Shop a selection of Alexander McQueen trainers and other shoes on 1stDibs.

Kering owns Alexander McQueen as well as a number of other luxury brands, including Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent. François Pinault founded the French multinational corporation under the name Pinault S.A. in 1962. Kering was initially in the timber supply business (its focus shifted toward specialized retail distribution in the 1990s). Find a collection of vintage Alexander McQueen on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
One way to spot a fake Alexander McQueen t-shirt is to examine the tag. A real tag will show either a Q with an MC in the middle or the full brand name with the C inside of the letter Q. Check that the font is correct and that the stitching is straight. If the tag doesn't seem securely attached, the tee is likely fake. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of expertly vetted Alexander McQueen apparel.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
How you wear Alexander McQueen sneakers is largely a matter of personal preference. Finish off an ensemble centered around denim jeans or shorts with a pair or use them to add casual flair to a dress or skirt. Feel free to get creative and experiment with different looks. Shop a range of Alexander McQueen sneakers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
You can wear an Alexander McQueen skull scarf a variety of ways. The bold print makes it ideal for pairing with solid-colored tops and dresses, but you can also mix it with prints in a small or micro scale. Fold it into a triangle or a rectangle and play with different ways of draping and tying it. You'll find a selection of Alexander McQueen scarves on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
