How Much is a Purple Audemars Piguet?
A Close Look at modern Jewelry
Rooted in centuries of history of adornment dating back to the ancient world, modern jewelry reimagines traditional techniques, forms and materials for expressive new pieces. As opposed to contemporary jewelry, which responds to the moment in which it was created, modern jewelry often describes designs from the 20th to 21st centuries that reflect movements and trends in visual culture.
Modern jewelry emerged from the 19th-century shift away from jewelry indicating rank or social status. The Industrial Revolution allowed machine-made jewelry using electric gold plating, metal alloys and imitation stones, making beautiful jewelry widely accessible. Although mass production deemphasized the materials of the jewelry, the vision of the designer remained important, something that would be furthered in the 1960s with what’s known as the “critique of preciousness.”
A design fair called the “Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes” brought global attention to the Art Deco style in 1925 and gathered a mix of jewelry artists alongside master jewelers like Van Cleef & Arpels, Mauboussin and Boucheron. Art Deco designs from Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels unconventionally mixed gemstones like placing rock crystals next to diamonds while borrowing motifs from eclectic sources including Asian lacquer and Persian carpets. Among Cartier’s foremost design preoccupations at the time were high-contrast color combinations and crisp, geometric forms and patterns. In the early 20th century, modernist jewelers like Margaret De Patta and artists such as Alexander Calder — who is better known for his kinetic sculptures than his provocative jewelry — explored sculptural metalwork in which geometric shapes and lines were preferred over elaborate ornamentation.
Many of the innovations in modern jewelry were propelled by women designers such as Wendy Ramshaw, who used paper to craft her accessories in the 1960s. During the 1970s, Elsa Peretti created day-to-night pieces for Tiffany & Co. while designers like Lea Stein experimented with layering plastic, a material that had been employed in jewelry since the mid-19th century and had expanded into Bakelite, acrylics and other unique materials.

Finding the Right bracelets for You
Today, antique and vintage bracelets are versatile and universally loved accessories that can add polish and pizzazz to any ensemble.
Bracelets were among the jewels discovered to have been buried with Pharaoh Tutankhamun when his tomb was unearthed in 1922, and wrist and arm bracelets were allegedly worn by Queen Puabi in Sumer, southern Mesopotamia. But preceding the adornments of Ancient Egypt and elsewhere, the people of prehistoric times likely wore the decorative accessory, fashioning it from shells and fish bones. When the Bronze Age allowed for more durable materials and semiprecious stones to be incorporated into jewelry, bracelets became a treasured symbol of wealth.
In the thousands of years following the debut of the world’s first bracelets, the artistry behind this common accessory has only broadened, with designers at popular jewelry houses growing more venturesome over time. David Webb looked to nature for his Animal Kingdom bracelets, and for her best-selling bracelets and more at Tiffany & Co., Elsa Peretti would frequently do the same. From bangles to tennis bracelets, the modern age offers plenty of options.
Internationally acclaimed bracelet designs have on occasion become powerful symbols of status, style and, in the case of Cartier's iconic design, love. The Cartier Love bracelet can be found on the wish list of most jewelry lovers and on the wrist of some of the world’s biggest stars. Its arrangement of mock screwheads and distinctive functionality — it was initially locked and unlocked with an accompanying vermeil screwdriver — is an enduring expression of loyalty, unity and romance. (Do you know how to spot a fake Cartier Love bracelet?)
While the Love bracelet has played a role in the skyrocketing popularity of cuff-style bracelets, they are far from the only glamorous option for collectors. Make a statement with an Art Deco design, a style that sees all kinds of iterations fitted with studded cuffs, one-of-a-kind shapes and dazzling insets. A chunky vintage gold bracelet in the Retro style will prove eye-catching and elevate any outfit.
One of the best things about bracelets, however, is that you never have to choose just one. Style icon Jacqueline Kennedy stacked her Croisillon bracelets — designed by Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co. — with such frequency that the ornate bangles were eventually dubbed “Jackie bracelets” by reporters. Contemporary silver pieces can easily complement each other, rendering a layering of luxury almost a necessity.

- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023To identify your Audemars Piguet watch, first look for its case number. You'll find it on the back or inside of the case or in both places. - 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023The dial on the Audemars Piguet is simply called a dial. However, many Audemars Piguet timepieces feature an iconic textural effect known as Tapisserie. Watches with Tapisserie patterning on their dials show off raised squares arranged in a grid. Applying the patterning is a complex process that involves engraving, lathing and pantography, a method of reproducing drawings mechanically by increasing and decreasing their size. On 1stDibs, find a variety of Audemars Piguet watches.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023Whether it's hard to buy Audemars Piguet watches depends largely on the model you wish to purchase. - 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023There are only 250 Audemars Piguet Black Panthers in existence. Part of a collaboration with Marvel, the timepiece is a variation on the brand's popular Royal Oak model that features a unique pulsating tourbillon. The accessory has a sandblasted titanium case inspired by the iconic character's suit, a satin-brushed and polished black ceramic bezel, a sculpted figure on the dial and a purple rubber strap. Shop a wide variety of Audemars Piguet watches on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 27, 2023To tell if an Audemars Piguet watch is real, examine its details closely. The dial is often a giveaway. On authentic timepieces, the tapisserie pattern consists of individual raised squares, while replicas often have the pattern drawn on or shallowly stamped onto the dial. A genuine Audemars Piguet timepiece will have an even polished finish all over. Any dull or rough spots on the case usually indicate a fake. If you're uncertain about the authenticity of a specific timepiece, consult a licensed appraiser or knowledgeable dealer. Explore a wide variety of Audemars Piguet watches on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 23, 2024Yes, Audemars Piguet is a good watch brand. In fact, the Swiss luxury watchmaker's timepieces are almost universally acclaimed and widely coveted. Audemars Piguet emphasizes quality over quantity, producing a limited number of timepieces in accordance with strict quality standards, with movements designed and made in-house. The artisans at Audemars Piguet can spend a year crafting each watch that bears the brand name. Explore a wide variety of Audemars Piguet watches on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 27, 2023Yes, some Audemars Piguet watches are made of gold. The Swiss luxury watchmaker produces timepieces out of yellow, rose and white gold, as well as other materials like ceramic, platinum and titanium. One of Audemars Piguet's most acclaimed finishes is frosted gold. To create it, artisans employ an ancient Florentine hammering technique that gives the precious metal a sparkling diamond-like appearance. On 1stDibs, shop an assortment of Audemars Piguet gold watches.
- 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 23, 2024Many celebrities wear Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore watches. Musician and entrepreneur Jay-Z is especially well known for sporting the Royal Oak and other Audemars Piguet pieces, and he has even made references to his admiration for the brand in his songs. Arnold Schwarzenegger also has a famed collection of Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore timepieces. The watch was also heavily featured in the HBO television series Entourage. On 1stDibs, shop an assortment of Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore watches.
- 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 23, 2024How many grams of gold an Audemars Piguet watch is varies from timepiece to timepiece. The gram weight of gold in any timepiece depends on its size and the amount of gold it features. Over the years, Audemars Piguet has produced watches out of both solid gold and gold plating in a variety of sizes. Solid gold watches will contain more grams of gold than plated ones of similar sizes, and the larger the watch is, the more it will weigh. On 1stDibs, find a large collection of Audemars Piguet watches.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 8, 2023To tell if an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is fake, first examine the details of the case. A genuine timepiece will have even beveling and fluid edges. Irregular beveling or rough spots usually indicate a replica. Next, examine the dial with a magnifying glass. You should notice two distinct textures in the iconic "Tapisserie" pattern. Fake timepieces will often have raised squares that are smooth rather than textured. When in doubt, consult a licensed appraiser or experienced dealer for assistance with authentication. Shop a large selection of Audemars Piguet watches from some of the world's top dealers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 23, 2024It can be difficult to state exactly what type of watch the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is due to the very nature of its design. Before its release, most watches for men were either dress watches or sports watches. Its creator, Gérald Genta, intended for the Royal Oak to be a bridge between the two. It has sporty features like an octagonal case and specially designed bezel screws, but also has dressier details. Some people refer to it as a sports dress watch due to this unique blend of elements. On 1stDibs, shop an assortment of Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watches.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 27, 2023To tell a fake Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore apart from a real one, first closely examine the dial. The tapisserie pattern on the dial should feature raised squares in a regular pattern. On fakes, the dial is often just stamped with a grid to mimic the complex texture of an authentic Offshore. Also, look at the finish on the case. A real Oak Offshore will have an even finish all over with no variations in color or rough spots. Any flaws indicate that you're likely looking at a replica. When in doubt, a licensed appraiser or knowledgeable appraiser can assist you with authentication. Explore a collection of Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore watches on 1stDibs.
