How Much is a Sofa Long Back?
Finding the Right Seating for You
With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.
Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.
Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.
The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.
Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.
With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.
Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.
No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.
- What is a long sofa called?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021A long sofa is usually called a chaise longue (in America, this is sometimes referred to as a chaise lounge). A chaise longue is a low reclining seat — it’s not quite a daybed, nor is it a sofa. It is an upholstered piece of furniture that gained popularity in France in the early 16th century. Shop a collection of antique, vintage, and contemporary chaise longues from some of the world’s top dealers on 1stDibs.
- How long should a sofa last?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertMay 3, 2024A sofa should last many years. The average lifespan of a sofa is 7 to 15 years. However, well-made pieces that are properly cared for may remain in good condition for much longer. To extend the life of your sofa, follow the maker's care advice regarding cleaning and stain removal. On 1stDibs, explore a large selection of sofas.

- 1stDibs ExpertMay 30, 2024There are many types of sofas that are long-lasting. The durability of a sofa depends on both its materials and its construction. Some features that can help sofas stand the test of time include solid wood frames, hand-tied spring suspension systems and quality foam padding. In terms of upholstery, leather usually outlasts fabric, but there are exceptions to the rule based on quality and care. On 1stDibs, find a large selection of sofas.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 7, 2024The difference between high-back and low-back sofas is that the former has a taller backrest than the latter. Some people, especially tall men and women, feel that a high-back sofa is more comfortable because the taller back offers more support for the shoulders and neck. Low-back sofas are popular picks for open-plan interiors, as they allow sightlines to be maintained across a space. On 1stDibs, shop a wide variety of high-back and low-back sofas.
- How long is a three-seater sofa?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertFebruary 1, 2024How long a three-seater sofa is varies from piece to piece. However, most sofas designed to seat three adults are somewhere between 70 and 87 inches long. The average size is around 84 inches in length. On 1stDibs, explore a large collection of sofas.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 13, 2024What a sofa without a back is called depends on its style. A divan is a casual, low backless sofa, often clad in fabric and tufted. More formal backless sofas, usually framed by scrolled arms, are recamiers. Find a large selection of antique, vintage and contemporary sofas on 1stDibs.
