Maedate [helmet crest]: Kuwagata (stylized horns) with shakudo kuwagata-dai (support) fitted with three hanabishi (flower-shaped family crest) and a large gilt-wood peony
Menpō [mask]: A russet iron (tetsu sabiji) ressei-men (mask with fierce expression)

This book contextualizes Hendricks’s portraits at different stages of the country’s history and places him in the pantheon of innovative twentieth-century artists.
Hendricks developed his signature style at a time of significant social and cultural change in the United States, especially with regard to Black artists, and amid a perceived bifurcation between abstraction and representation. He produced portraits from the late 1960s through the early 1980s. Following a hiatus during which he made landscapes, basketball paintings, works on paper, and photographs, he resumed his portraiture practice from 2002 until his death in 2017. We have searched the worldwide web and there is not a single wooden elephant sculpture out there that even comes close to having the same quality details and/or such perfect anotomy. It does not take a biologist to see that the artist has perfectly captured the soul of these ancient herbivors and therefor too they have great aesthetic and decorative value. Some of the amazing details of these sizable tuskers are their dried-leather-like skins. You just don't find carved elephants like that, because besides being extremely time consuming, it also takes great skill. Other great features/details are the loose skin around the hips and around the 'armpits', the trunks and mouths, the amazing body postures and ofcourse the stunning ears. They too are unlike anything we ever saw in an elephant sculpture. That too is why it did not take 30 seconds for us to know we had to have these in our gallery on 1stdibs (now also home to the most beautiful elephants on earth). Besides being more realistic than any wooden elephant we have seen or sold before, this pair also is fairly large in size. And with them being carved out of solid teakwood they have quite a bit of weight to them as well. Previous owners have clearly taken very, very good care of these midcentury carved elephants which is why they could not be in better condition either.
