Alfred Sisley Art
French, 1839-1899
Alfred Sisley (1839 - 1899) was an Impressionist landscape painter who was born and spent most of his life in France, but retained British citizenship. Sisley was born in Paris to affluent British parents. His father, William Sisley, was in the silk business, and his mother, Felicia Sell, was a cultivated music connoisseur.
Sisley was the most consistent of the Impressionists in his dedication to painting landscape en plein air (i.e., outdoors). He deviated into figure painting only rarely and, unlike Renoir and Pissarro, found that Impressionism fulfilled his artistic needs.
Among his important works are a series of paintings of the River Thames, mostly around Hampton Court, executed in 1874, and landscapes depicting places in or near Moret-sur-Loing. The notable paintings of the Seine and its bridges in the former suburbs of Paris are like many of his landscapes, characterized by tranquillity, in pale shades of green, pink, purple, dusty blue and cream. Over the years Sisley's power of expression and colour intensity increased.to

A unique opportunity to acquire a period vintage print presentation of one of Sisley's famous impressionist paintings from a historic London retail gallery.
Available for sale from Big Sky Fine Art; this period vintage print from the 1930s. The print was sold from the Zwemmer Gallery of 26 Litchfield Street, London W.C.2 .
The presentation is untouched and remains sealed since the 1930s. The original dark wood frame with its original fittings has knocks and losses which only serve to endorse the vintage look and appeal.
The original Zwemmer Gallery label is present and intact on the reverse.
The gallery was established by the Dutchman Anton Zwemmer (1892-1971) in 1929 as an extension to his bookshop and publishing business created in 1921. The establishment was the only major art bookshop in London and from where Zwemmer introduced Modernism to London.
Instrumental to the concept of the gallery as a venture was the British artist and architect Victor Pasmore CBE 1908 – 1998 in that a gallery could run alongside the successful bookshop by drawing on the work of artists at the Central School of Art and Design. The bookshop, had sold as a complimenting product line, a selection of first colour prints of first rate artworks that were readily in the public consciousness. This trade then moved to the gallery alongside pre-war exhibitions of original works by the likes of Graham Bell, Rodrigo Moynihan, Ivor Hitchens, Victor Pasmore. Ceri Richards, John Piper and Winifred Nicholson...
