Knoll Furniture

American

As a company that produced many of the most famous and iconic furniture designs of the 20th century, Knoll was a chief influence in the rise of modern design in the United States. Led by Florence Knoll, the firm would draw stellar talents such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Eero Saarinen into its compass. Their work would help change the face of the American home and office.

The company was formed in 1938 by the German immigrant Hans Knoll. He first worked with his fellow ex-pat, the Danish designer Jens Risom, who created furniture with flowing lines made of wood. While Risom served in World War II, in 1943 Knoll met his future wife, Florence Schust. She had studied and worked with eminent emigré leaders of the Bauhaus, including Mies, Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer. She won Knoll over with Bauhaus notions of industrial arts, and an aesthetic that featured flat and tubular metal frames and angular forms. When Hans died in a car crash in 1955, Florence Knoll was appointed head of the company. It was as much through her holistic approach to design — a core division of the firm was dedicated to planning office systems — as Knoll's mid-century modern furnishings themselves that she brought about the sleek and efficient transformation of the American workplace.

Today, classic Knoll furnishings remain staples of modern design collections and decor. A history of modern design is written in pieces such as the elegant Barcelona chaircreated by Mies and Lilly Reich — Saarinen’s pedestal Tulip chair, Breuer’s tubular steel Wassily lounge chair and the grid-patterned Diamond chair by Harry Bertoia.

As you can see from the collection of these designs and other vintage Knoll dining chairs, sofas and tables on 1stDibs, this manufacturer's offerings have become timeless emblems of the progressive spirit and sleek sophistication of the best of modernism.

Barcelona Daybed by Mies Van Der Rohe for Knoll International, 1960s, Signed
By Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Knoll
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This iconic and authentic (both the leather cushion and the Mahogany frame is signed with Knoll International labels) daybed is the 'Barcelona Daybed' also referred to as the 'Barcelona Couch' by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for Knoll International and is considered an 'early original production collectors example' as it is from Knoll's earlier years of producing this design in the 1960s and 1970s before they changed to different manufacturing processes during the 1980s. This example is signed with a Knoll International label that has the 320 Park Ave address and is dated on the back of the label July 9, 1975. To determine the estimated production year we note that the date most likely corresponds to the retailer or possibly the Knoll sold/ ship date. The address of 320 Park Ave changed to Fifth Ave in 1970 and Knoll Associates did not become Knoll International until 1968. Therefore we would pinpoint the production year to be between 1968 and 1970. It is possible that it was slightly after 1970 that this example was produced as it is believed that Knoll continued to use labels with the older 320 Park Ave for several months to a couple years after changing addresses, however generally speaking 1970s examples will be labelled with their Fifth Ave address. All construction details also indicate a 1st-Generation 'original' production by Knoll as their production did not change throughout the Knoll Associates years and through the first half of the Knoll International years. This rare original 1st-Generation 'Barcelona Daybed' features its original brown leather upholstery with subtle patina and wear throughout. These traces of age and use bring more vibrancy to the leather, giving this piece an on-trend lightly distressed look. The original bolster pillow in matching brown leather is secured to the cushion and platform via straps and lock snaps. The platform is crafted from stained Mahogany and supported by polished tubular stainless steel legs and the original leather straps are all in-tact. Both the cushion is labelled and the platform frame as well with a partial Knoll International sticker label as can be seen in the photo gallery. Considered to be the epitome of modern design, Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich originally designed the Barcelona chair in 1929 to serve as seating for the king and queen of Spain in the German Pavilion. This was Germany's entry for the International Exhibition, hosted by Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Designed in 1930 the Barcelona daybed (also referred to as the Barcelona Couch) emanates this seminal design, paralleling the same simplicity and elegance of the iconic Barcelona chair. This Barcelona couch by Mies van der Rohe for Knoll International is ideal for a living room, family room, study, den or lounge. It would also be an Apt choice in a corporate, retail or hospitality location such as a boutique hotel lobby, cocktail bar, members club, workspace studio, executive office or in a retail boutique...

Early Jumbo Table in Golden Calacatta by Gae Aulenti for Knoll International
By Gae Aulenti, Knoll
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This pièce de résistance is considered the holy grail of 'Jumbo' cocktail tables due to the rare golden Calacatta marble which features dramatic veins in golds and greys. The 'Jumbo' table is already extremely sought after and original early production examples are extremely rare. The white, grey and gold Calacatta marble is the most sought after due to the deep gold veining - and this particular example is an original early production example with a copy of the original receipt provided to us by the original buyer / owner, ideal for a collector or an interior designer who has a client who wants only the best of the best. One thing we really love about this example is the dark almost black veins that look like lightning emanating from one corner like a work of art. Produced by Knoll International, the 'Jumbo' cocktail table was designed by Gae Aulenti in 1965, originally for Gavina Italy. This example was produced in the late 1980s and sold in 1990, per the original receipt. You can also see in the photos that there is age appropriate coloration to the marble which takes many decades to develop and you don't see in new and newer year productions. Most of the ones you see online, including on 1sDibs, the dealers will list as "1960s" production however you can tell that they were made in more recent years making them not desirable for collectors. Dealers do this because it allows them to list for a higher price however they often have no documentation to support their 1960s production claim. Therefore savvy collectors look for age in the marble and/or documentation to decipher when the table was made and if it is a collectors example which is worth much much more than new and newer examples. Perfect fit for a Postmodern or Mid-Century Modern home, this Jumbo table by Gae Aulenti for Knoll International in white gold and gray Calacatta marble would also work great in a Contemporary or Transitional home or office. Also consider a splash of juxtaposition in a Traditional, Classical, French, Spanish, Mediterranean, Mixed-Style, Asian, or Minimalistic styled room. Great for a designer residential or commercial project, due to its strength and sturdiness, would be apt for a hotel, lobby lounge, restaurant, retail boutique...

This first generation Maya Lin stool is no longer in production, making this fine example a rare and coveted collectors piece, and is fabricated of molded concrete, unlike the polyethylene (plastic) modern versions of today. This incredible example of post-modern functional art can be used as a stool, footstool, ottoman, small coffee table or side table or as occasional seating, for indoors or outdoors use, and is signed and dated underneath. In our opinion, these are far greater than the concrete designs by Willy Guhl, since his products were made using asbestos. 4 Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Mr10 Dining Chairs 1960s Knoll International
By Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Located in London, GB
Complete set of four chrome cantilever MR10 chairs by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, in brown leather. This set of chairs is an early 1960s example of his famous design produced by Knoll International. The MR10 chair was first designed in the 1920s, and this set of four features the chrome springs on the backs and seats. Later the design was improved, with a shortening of the springs and a reversion to an elastic corset cord. The chairs still bear the oval sticker marks on the back of the bottom of the seats. MR10 chairs are really comfortable, and are a real design Classic, as seen in many films and other media. Our MR10 chairs recently have been used to decorate the interior of a restaurant in London, which was featured in Architectural Digest, Dezeen, Elle Decoration, and many other publications (as shown in the images, which are property of Child Studio...

Robert Venturi 'Corinthian' Cocktail Table for Knoll International, circa 1985
By Robert Venturi, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, Knoll
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This rare Post-Modern collectors piece is the 'Corinthian' cocktail table by Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown for Knoll International, circa 1985, inspired by the ancient Greek architectural order and part of a collection of chairs and tables now made famous by Post-Modern collectors, connoisseurs and art / design investors. This design was part of the 'Venturi Collection' for Knoll which was introduced in 1985 shortly after they (Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown) helped design Knoll's New York showroom. The Venturi Collection was a postmodernist’s interpretation of historical chairs and tables which Venturi describes as “modern technology and historic symbolism, traditional symbolism and modern symbolism, comfort and elegance, function and wit, high purpose and fun.” Venturi created his 'Grandmother' fabric, a patterned plastic laminate, after a visit to his grandmothers house in Pennsylvania where he saw fabrics of hers that inspired him. Later he copyrighted his pattern, although licensing it to Knoll for use with his chairs and tables. Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown produced nine variants of the Venturi Collection side chairs for Knoll in 1984, each suggesting a specific historical furniture style. For this chair, the silhouette of the back is an adaptation of Thomas Chippendale's 18th Century English designs. In 1985 the 'Chippendale' model was introduced by the Philadelphia Museum of Art as part of their collection. In addition, tables such as the 'Corinthian' cocktail table was developed to be used with or apart from the chairs in their collection. Other pieces within the collection include the Chippendale chair...

1st-Gen Knoll Barcelona Lounge Set by Mies Van Der Rohe, c. 1968, Double-Signed

1st-Gen Knoll 'Barcelona' Stool by Mies Van Der Rohe, c. 1968, Double-Signed
By Lilly Reich, Knoll, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A fantastic collectors example of a double-signed 1st-Generation "original" Barcelona stool / ottoman by Knoll International labelled (on the cushion) and stamped (on the frame) and in its original gorgeous cognac brown color leather. What is special about this piece is that it was produced between 1968 and 1969 just after Knoll Associates became Knoll International, at the height of their ascent in modern designs and production and just before they moved to their future location on Fifth Ave in 1970. Shortly after this period they changed production on the Barcelona line thus making these rare collectors examples from the end of Knoll's 1st Generation production run of the Barcelona series and for collectors, often the most desirable. *Note, we have a pair of Barcelona Chairs with two ottomans in another listing. We acquired this set from the daughter of the original owner who had two chairs and three ottomans. This listing is only for the single ottoman. See our other listings or contact us if you wish to purchase as a combined set. Being one of the most copied designs (and a timeless classic), we never purchase unsigned Barcelona chairs and we suggest you be hesitant when considering unsigned examples, so of course we were delighted to acquire this fantastic set of signed originals. In addition - people often add Knoll stickers to fakes, so the entirety of details is vastly more important than just a sticker label alone. This stool / ottoman possess its original Knoll International paper label stitched into the cushion with the 320 Park Ave New York address. We have confirmed these paper labels have not been removed and reattached via the stitching which is a great sign that the leather and underside canvas are original. And the frame has the Knoll Production KP-stamp which Knoll used in their early years to identify their stainless steel frames. The correct strap fasteners are apparent indicating they have not been replaced. The leather straps exhibit correct age and via its details we have determined the straps are original as well. And even the foam inside of the cushions are original - there is slight firmness and hardening to them which is actually a good thing, it shows that it is original which collectors prefer. All in all, this is a fabulous all-original double-signed example with original frame, original straps and hardware, original leather cushions, original inner foam, and original canvas fabric on the undersides of the seat cushion. Collectors and art/design investors... eat your hearts out. With this early 1st Gen example you'll feel pride in that you have the "real thing", and rare early production examples to boot, while your friends boast either a knock-off, reproduction or brand-new production-line versions which do not have the collectability value as the earlier originals such as this one - you can feel pride in having one of the most desirable examples out there. Considered to be the epitome of modern design, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich originally designed the Barcelona chair in 1929 to serve as seating for the king and queen of Spain in the German Pavilion. This was Germany's entry for the International Exhibition, hosted by Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The frames were made with polished chrome hand-ground and hand-buffed to a mirror finish with leather upholstery straps attached with aluminum rivets. The upholstery is fabricated from a single cowhide with each individual panel being cut, hand-welted and hand tufted with leather buttons. Whether you're a designer seeking a quintessential piece or a collector adding to your modern design collection, this iconic Knoll International Barcelona...

1st Generation '657' Armchairs by Charles Pollock for Knoll Associates, Signed
By Charles Pollock, Knoll
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Incredible 1st-generation collectors examples (original production of this design) of the classic Charles Pollock 'Model 657' Armchairs for Knoll Associates, signed with Knoll Associates paper labels (see photos). This pair has beautiful cognac brown color with light attractive age. Secondly, and most importantly, these are labeled with its original Knoll Associates tags which date these towards the early few years of production before Knoll Associates changed hands to Knoll International. The labels are date stamped with Feb 16, 1971 however Knoll Associates became Knoll International in 1968 and at that time they changed the labels used in production. In addition, the address on the labels are the older 320 Park Ave which they moved from in 1970. Most likely these chairs were produced around 1968 but then later sold and shipped out in 1971. This pair of 657-armchairs are ideal for a collector who wants the 'original' production examples with all-original leather. And considering the condition of these - this pair won't last long so be sure to buy them while they are still available! These 657 leather sling armchairs perfectly blend comfort, functionality, and style. The frame is made from polished chrome steel tubing with cast aluminum, creating a sleek and subtly contrasting profile. The seat is a cognac brown cowhide suspended on the frame which has been carefully shaped to form the back and seat sling. The thick sling leather contrasts beautifully with the black arms, black leather seat pads and black seat supports attached to the chrome frames. Under the sling-seats are the original Knoll Associates manufacturing stickers which identify these from being in their earlier (original) production runs of this design. The leather has an attractive light patina in excellent vintage conditions. Both chairs present very well, are ideal collectors examples and are ready for immediate use. Here is a quote from Charles Pollock speaking to the design of this chair taken from Knoll's website: “I was penniless, didn’t have a car and I was making my prototypes out of plumbing that I pulled out of an old, abandoned basement. I brought all these prototypes in [to Knoll] without an appointment and pushed them off the elevator and said, ‘I want to see Florence Knoll.’ Fortunately for me, [Senior Designer] Vincent Cafiero came out just by accident, and he said, ‘Who are you?’ I said, ‘I’m Charles Pollock.’ I had had a major article in Interiors, in a series of articles about Saarinen, Eames, and myself about three or four months before, and he had read that…. So Cafiero said, “Look, this stuff is interesting. Why don’t you take this idea and throw this other idea into it?” Eventually, between Vincent Cafiero and myself, I developed a quarter-inch scale model of a chair that was very, very similar to…the 657 chair...

By comparing the style of the logo to samples online, you can estimate the age of the piece. In some cases, the manufacturing year may appear on the sticker. To date a Knoll chair, look for the tag sewn on the back of the seat cushion. Often, the manufacturer prints the date there. You'll find a collection of expertly vetted Knoll furniture on 1stDibs.

The history of the Knoll sofa began in 1954. The sofa was made during American designer and entrepreneur Florence Knoll’s direction of the Knoll Planning Unit, the company's pioneering "design consultant service" that would define the look of the postwar workplace. The versatile Florence Knoll sofa, with its angular silhouette and tasteful mix of textures, could as easily fit into the glass lobby of a skyscraper as the living room of a home. That same year, Florence Knoll also introduced a companion lounge chair that coordinated with the sofa. Knoll, Inc. continues to produce the Florence Knoll sofa over half a century after it was introduced, and vintage models are still prized for their sturdy construction and timeless qualities. What Florence Knoll called the Womb chair after it was created is unknown. However, its creator Eero Saarinen stated that Knoll inspired him to make the piece by asking him to design the most comfortable chair ever, saying specifically that she wanted something that felt like "a basket full of pillows." Presented with the challenge, Saarinen went primal. What, the designer figured, better signifies the very essence of comfort than the womb? "It was designed on the theory that a great number of people have never really felt comfortable and secure since they left the womb,” the designer said of his chair.
