An extraordinary "Kepeng Lamak" from Bali, Indonesia, circa early 20th century. Lamak is a general term for temple hangings, mostly made of disposable materials like palm leaves for temporary offerings. A small number, such as this piece, were made by wealthy and aristocratic families for permanent display. The lamaks are traditionally displayed in temples or residents for a strong spiritual reason in Bali that is known as "Artja". They could function as receptacles, or a vessels of for the habitation of the deities when they descent to the earth on propitious occasions.

A large and graceful carved nephrite jade conjoined double vase in the form of a pair of Buddha's hands fruit (finger citron), late Qing Dynasty, circa 1900, China.
The large and heavy vase carved from a single piece of celadon nephrite jade, with areas of lighter brown "sugar" skin. The vase ingeniously carved as a pair of Buddha's hand fruit, also known as finger citron, rising from a gnarled, leafy branch. The smaller Buddha's hand with a pair of bats. The Buddha's hands fruit with elegant and naturalistic curved "fingers". The "fingers wonderfully shaped and reticulated. The body of the fruit with simple stippling, in imitation of the textured surface of the real fruit. The interior of each fruit well hollowed and able to hold water.
Buddha's hands fruit are auspicious in Chinese culture. Their name in Chinese "Fo Shou" is a homophone for "Happiness and Longevity. They are often placed as offerings on Buddhist altars...

Showcasing high-quality workmanship and excellent attention to detail, crafted in the early 20th century, almost certainly in the Chaozhou region of Southern China.
Hand carved solid Huanghuali hardwood in the original red and gold lacquer parcel gilt finish; three-piece design for easy moving or storage, surmounted with a circular mirror plate mounted in a round wooden frame adorned in ornate relief decoration, resting atop a tapering fitted intricately detailed hand carved, pierced, and incised fiolated interlaced sculptural openwork panel, the artistic scence depicting four traditional ancient Chinese Scholar figures climbing the elaborate structure, rising atop a reticulated stepped rectangular shaped base with canted corners, pierced foliate raised gallery, and molded skirt with scalloped edge embellished on all sides with floral acanthus scroll and dragon mask relief work, further rising on four squared tapering legs terminating in bullet feet accented with carvings.
