Mid-Century Modern Building and Garden Elements

MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE

Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

ICONIC MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE DESIGNS

VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.

Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.

Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer

Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.

The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by celebrated manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.

As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.

Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.

Generations turn over, and mid-century modern remains arguably the most popular style going. As the collection of vintage mid-century modern chairs, dressers, coffee tables and other furniture for the living room, dining room, bedroom and elsewhere on 1stDibs demonstrates, this period saw one of the most delightful and dramatic flowerings of creativity in design history.

1950-1960’s Tropitone Kahana Stackable Chaise Lounge Vinyl Straps Aluminum Frame
Located in Topeka, KS
Handsome 1950-1960’s Mid-Century Modern Tropitone Kahana stackable chaise lounge w/vinyl straps & powder coated aluminum frame. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, all frames have been cleaned with soap & water but have some scratches & signs of wear & the straps have some yellowing from sun exposure, lotions, & use. Also, when the chairs are stacked the vinyl straps stretch but when un-stacked the straps return to their original form. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1950-1960’s. NOTE: We have 6 of these Tropitone Kahana stackable chaise lounges available. We also have other listings composed of Tropitone Kahana stackable chaise lounges that are a bit newer & a slightly different color here for sale, check them out!! NOTE II: If you want a photo of the exact chair you would be getting, please request at purchase so you can examine and approve prior to shipping. Otherwise, we will ship the chair we have that is in the best condition at the time of your order. Is there anything quite as relaxing as a day lounging by the pool? We certainly don’t think so. And it’s EVEN BETTER if you’re lucky enough to be laying in a fabulous vintage Tropitone Kahana chaise lounge… GOOD NEWS!!!… We are here to help!! This is a FANTASTIC vintage Kahana chaise lounge chair by Tropitone composed of a commercial quality smooth powder coated aluminum frame, vinyl straps with a double wrapping technique exclusive to Tropitone enhancing durability and comfort, a height adjustable backrest with five different lean choices, and it bears a premier construction design boasting sleek geometric lines, elegance, functionality, ergonomic comfort, and a weather resilient finish ready to take on all of the elements! The color is somewhere between the current “Textured Sonora” and “Textured Shell” and it is conveniently STACKABLE!!! Whether on your patio, surrounding a firepit, aside the tiki bar, or lined along the poolside… this marvelous mid-century modern chaise is the one you need. Much like its island beach namesake, this Kahana vinyl strap chaise lounge chair is ready to complete your outdoor paradise. Tropitone was founded in Sarasota, Florida in 1954 by Burt M. Baker, a retired Lockhead Engineer and executive at Grand Rapids Chair Company. Tropitone served the contract market, including hotels, motels, clubs, and resorts with high performing outdoor patio furniture. In the 1960’s they introduced powder coated aluminum finishes to the industry. Utilizing a multi-step wash process that ensures a lasting finish, Tropitone’s aluminum frames prevail under any environmental conditions. Tropitone also pioneered the technique of double-wrapping vinyl straps around the powder coated aluminum frame for extra durability, which continues today. In 1970’s they established operations in Irvine, California which provided a bi-coastal manufacturing to North American customers. In the 80’s they released “Comfort is Key” cushions and sling seating. Tropitone sling seating has the perfect combination of clean lines, designer fabrics and carefree maintenance. In the 90’s EZ Span and Basta Sole Umbrellas were introduced and in the 2000’s woven furniture and Relax Plus cushion seating was created including replications of rattan or wicker outdoor...

Rare France Limoges Porcelain & Bronze Bathroom Set Washbasin Mirror Pendant Etc
Located in Lisse, NL
Highly decorative porcelain bathroom set with stunning roses pattern, by one of Europe's finest. Over the years we have sold very few porcelain Limoges pieces and that is simply because these high value items don't find there way to the open market very often. So to have been given the opportunity to purchase a set as complete and remarkable as the one we are offering you here, more than made our day. Also, because we already know that someone will be thrilled to be able to own and use this rare and beautiful set in their (new) home or, for example, in their holiday home. This vintage Limoges set of high quality and detail consists of the following: - A practical size washbasin with gilt bronze mythological dolphin handles. - Large mirror in stylish bronze frame with a mounted (or built-in) 4-light sconce. - A porcelain shelf (for wall mounting) to go under the mirror. - A bronze and porcelain, 4 light pendant light. - A shell design porcelain and bronze soap holder (for wall mounting). - A toilet paper holder with some damage (we therefor listed this set as a five-piece set). The two stunning bronze dolphins used to be the handles with which you could turn on the cold and hot water, but at some point in time the actual water tap...
