The artist enjoyed a prestigious career. According to the Benezit, Baucke studied under Karl Janssen at the Dusseldorf Academy of Fine Arts. In 1903 Baucke moved to Berlin and executed several commissions for Kaiser Wilhelm II including a major work at the Royal Palace in Berlin (known since the end of the monarchy in 1918 as the Berlin Palace) and supervision of the development of the Schlossplatz palace square. Carl Kauba (1865-1922)
Carl Kauba was born August 13, 1865 in Vienna, Austria. The son of a shoemaker, Kauba chose to follow his calling into the world of art. Collectors now rank him in a class with Remington and Russell as one of the great portrayers of American Western. His subjects were typically Native American Indians, Cavalrymen, Cowboys, and Roughriders. In addition to his American bronzes, Kauba produced a lifetime’s worth of Austrian statuary. His work became fully appreciated on both sides of the Atlantic.
Carl studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under professor Laufenberg. Later he would study at the academies under Carl Waschmann and Stefan Schwartz. Next, he went to Paris in 1886 to further study before he set off for the U.S.
Kauba’s fascination with the West was fired by the stories of the German writer, Carl May, whose tales of Western adventure were well known throughout Europe. Most authorities feel that he was about twenty-five years old when he traveled widely throughout the American West. This pair of cold-painted and patinated bronze figures were made by Alfonzo Titze, cast from models by Carl Kauba (1865-1922), who was a removed Austrian artist particularly known for his patinated bronze depictions of the Wild West.
The bronzes portray a pair of Native Americans, each one standing on a rough-hewn deep red marble base.
The first figure portrays a Native American warrior, called a brave. Leaning forward his mouth is open as if he is shouting. A small feather headdress ornaments the figure's head. Vibrant red frills are decorating parts of the trousers and shirt, an animal fur boa, as well as a yellow, blue, and white scarf covering his body.

A delightful pair of early 20th century floral bouquets by the Parisian sculptor Fernand Cian (French, 1886-1954), the cast terracotta features a wonderful impressionistic display of flowers, including many beautifully rendered roses, grapes and other fruits curling over the sides of the fluted basket raised on a gadrooned footer over a beautifully patinated rouge marble base.
Fernand Cian was born Fernando Ciancianaini in Carrara, Italy. He became known as a French sculptor and developed a strong reputation for his detailed bronze and terracotta works in the early 20th century. He studied in Paris under the luminary Laporte Blairsy as well as the titan of sculpture Alexandre Falguière and developed a style influenced by the Art Nouveau movement he worked within with a strong nod to the classical works of the eighteenth-century. He exhibited eleven times at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1907 to 1928 and received honorable mention in 1921.
Cian's sculptures are admired for their graceful lines and dynamic poses, often depicting mythological themes. These works were exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1911 and 1928 and remain popular among collectors.
In addition to smaller sculptures, Cian contributed to public monuments and architectural projects. He lived for many years in Torbole on Lake Garda, where his terracotta figures still adorn the Church of the Madonna delle Vittorie and numerous public squares in the area.
His sculpture can be found in both the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where his terracotta Cupid...
