Pair of Coalport Porcelain Oval Dishes, Flowers & Birds Patt.759, Regency ca1815
Located in London, GB
This is a spectacular pair of oval dishes made by Coalport between 1815 and 1820. The dishes bear the famous and very wonderful bird pattern with the number 759. Panels with stunning hand painted birds and flowers are set in a cobalt blue background with rich gilt decoration. This pattern is very desired and doesn't come to the market often, so this is a rare opportunity. Coalport was one of the leading potters in 19th and 20th Century Staffordshire. They worked alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport and Minton, and came out with many innovative designs. When we say "Coalport" we usually think of the one Coalport factory that became famous, but in its beginning years there were two factories, one run by John Rose and the other by his brother Thomas Rose. Thomas Rose went into partnership with Robert Anstice and Robert Horton and they were located directly opposite John Rose, across the canal. The brothers' factories had much in common with each other and they shared many different shapes and patterns. Ultimately, the John Rose factory proved more profitable and John Rose bought Thomas' factory in 1814, making it the one Coalport factory that became so famous. Many of the Coalport items, of either factory, are now collectors' items. The stunning thing about pattern 759 is that each bird is different, as well as each flower formation. All birds and flowers are painted carefully in their own colours; they are all different species. Each bird is an individual with its own expression; in fact I once had a large dinner service...

The cover is surmounted with exceptional cast floral and foliate motif emanating from a cast silver bud style finial; this ornamental motif is detachable, secured in situ via the screw fit finial. The hallmarks to the cover and rim of the base include: Maker's mark: Untraced Silver quality/purity mark: Mercury, 1 (.950, 950/1000, Paris) Guarantee mark: Paris (large guarantee) NOTE: From August 1819 the French silverware hallmarking system was developed to require pieces to be marked with the maker's mark, the mark indicating fineness and a guarantee mark. These continued to be the required range of hallmarks until May 1838, where the head of Minerva mark was utilised opposed to Mercury. This determines the date of the piece as circa 1830. Condition This French silver caviar dish is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The cast and chased decoration is very sharp and the engraved ornamentation is very crisp. The French hallmarks struck to the underside of the cover and rim of the base are all very clear. Durgin Co, the model number and signed, "D STERLING 930C". NutmegGraters.Com ~ American Sterling Nutmeg Grater By Durgin William B. Durgin Co. (1853 - 1924) was a noted American sterling silver manufacturer based in Concord, New Hampshire, and one of the largest flatware and hollowware manufacturers in the United States. Over the period between the 1905-1924 it was merged into the Gorham Manufacturing Company. The company was founded by the silversmith William Butler Durgin (July 29, 1833 - May 6, 1905). Durgin was born in Campton, New Hampshire, and from 1849-1853 apprenticed to Boston silversmith Newell Harding. In the 1840s Durgin moved back to Concord, where he opened a small shop making spoons opposite the Free Bridge Road. He incorporated as William B. Durgin Company in 1853, in 1854 added the manufacture of silverware, and in 1866 established a large brick factory on School Street. In 1905, after the death of both Durgin and his son, George F. Durgin, the company was acquired by Gorham through a long process that culminated with an official purchase in 1924. Production was moved to Providence, Rhode Island, in 1931. The company made the Davis Cup, the silver service for the battleship USS New Hampshire, and medals for St. Paul's School. Its Fairfax flatware...

Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a good small Serving Dish made of ironstone (Spode's Stone China) in the Ship Pattern, No 3068, produced by the English, Spode factory early in the 19th century, George 111rd Period.
