This is a very rare oval lobed dish from the famous "Earl of Camden" service made by the Derby Porcelain Company in 1795. The service was painted with typical English roses by William Billingsley, one of Britain's most famous painters, and responsible for exactly this type of rose painting on British porcelain.

The Derby Porcelain Company, later called Royal Crown Derby, is currently the oldest British porcelain factory still in production. The Derby pottery was one of the most prominent potteries right from the start of English porcelain production in the mid 1700s to today, and the factory went through many iterations. In the 1820s, it was called "Bloor Derby" as it came under the ownership of Robert Bloor; this factory later closed but its legacy was continued under the ownership of a group of employees, and later this was merged into a new factory called Royal Crown Derby, which is still in operation today and still carries forward some of the oldest patterns that have made it famous over the centuries.
William Billingsley was a brilliant but notoriously difficult man who left behind a trail of debts, broken hearts and mystery - but he was also one of the most important people in the history British porcelain. Billingsley revolutionised the way British decorators painted flowers; he added a freedom and artistry that now singles out British flower painting, and he created a new technique for painting roses, which you can see in this design. Billingsley worked at Derby, Worcester and Mansfield. He also set up his own potteries in Pinxton and Nantgarw and created some of the best porcelain ever made, but racking up great debts, before running off in the dead of night and ending his days at Coalport painting flowers.
Items painted by William Billingsley are rare and very much in demand - together with Thomas Baxter's work they are probably among the most desired pieces of British porcelain.
The Earl of Camden service was a huge service ordered by Lady Camden in 1795. It had to be produced under great, and unrealistic, time pressure and was notoriously late, much to Lady Camden's chagrin. She wanted the service to be produced by only the best artisans and therefore William Billingsley was tasked with painting all items - but it is thought that when it was clear the deadline was impossible to make, he enlisted the help of John Brewer for some of the last items, such as the ice pails. This plate shows the typical "Billingsley" roses: a beautiful naturally flowing garland of English roses interspersed with buds, trailing around a crisp gilt ribbon. The way the roses link into each other, the way each individual one is completely different, the light effects achieved by rubbing out some of the pink paint, and the very fine buds and foliage all point to these being from Billingsley's hand.

At the center of this lively scene, Fröhlich, dressed in vibrant carnival attire with a green hat and yellow cape, stands on the runners of the sleigh, leaning forward to embrace and steal a kiss from Countess Friesen. However, the "Countess" is, in fact, Schmiedel in disguise, adding to the humor of the piece. Schmiedel wears a floral-patterned gown with intricate hand-painted blooms in shades of purple, yellow, and red, complemented by a white apron and a red bonnet. The finely painted facial features capture the moment's theatricality, as Schmiedel grips the reins while seemingly playing along with the jest. In front of them, a small monkey with wings sits perched at the sleigh’s edge, holding a dish with two burning hearts, reinforcing the amorous and playful nature of the composition.
The back of the base bears the Meissen underglaze blue crossed swords mark, confirming its origin at the renowned German porcelain manufacturer. The model was first created by Johann Joachim Kändler in 1741, during his tenure as Meissen’s chief modeler. Kändler’s ability to animate porcelain figures with expressive gestures and dynamic movement is evident in this work, reflecting the theatrical influences of the period.
Meissen, established in the early 1700s under the patronage of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, was the first European porcelain manufacturer to successfully produce hard-paste porcelain. This outstanding pair of Dutch Delft blue and white tobacco jars were made circa 1770 to hold a type of tobacco named "DÜÎNKERKER."
Made in the city of Delft circa 1770, the cobalt blue decoration on the jars is outstanding.
Description: Framing the title of the jar is lovely floral decoration of leaves, small flowers, and scrolling vines.
At the top of the floral decoration, we see a vase bursting with leaves and flowers.
The covers are 20th century.
Dimensions: 8.75" tall (11"with covers) x 7.25" diameter at widest point
Condition: Excellent
Price: $2,400
Provenance: One of the pair has the mark of The Blompot on the underside. The Blompot factory operated from 1654 until 1841.
In addition, the Philadelphia Museum of Art has an almost identical tobacco jar made by a competing contemporary Dutch Delft factory. The museum notes the name on the jar, "DÜÎNKERKER," refers to a type of tobacco that was more commonly known as DÜÎNKERKEN, spelled with an "N" at the end. Duinkerken is a type of chewing tobacco.

Background of Dutch Delft:
The technique of making Delft was first described in writing by Gerrit Paape in "The Delft Pottery Maker," written in 1794 and dedicated to Lambertus Sanderus, the owner of De Porceleyne Claeuw (The Porcelain Claw). Delft faience began in the 17th century. Much of the most beautiful Delft was produced in the Dutch city of Delft. The Delft potters began to coat their pots thoroughly in a white tin glaze. They then began to cover the white tin glaze with a clear glaze, giving depth to the fired surface and smoothness to cobalt blues. Over time they created a good resemblance to porcelain. By circa 1650, the technical skills of the potters and painters were much improved, and Delft began its golden age.
Background of 18th Century Tobacco Use in The Netherlands:
Tobacco use in 18th century Holland was widespread and socially acceptable. It was commonly consumed through smoking in pipes. Pipe smoking became popular among all social classes, from the working class to the wealthy elite.
Tobacco was not only enjoyed for its recreational purposes but also had a role in social rituals and gatherings. It was often smoked during social events, in coffeehouses, taverns, and at private gatherings.
The Dutch Republic was known for its extensive trade networks, and tobacco was significant in this trade. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) was crucial in bringing tobacco from the colonies, such as Virginia in North America and Java in the East Indies. In addition, the VOC controlled much of the tobacco trade in Europe, contributing to the popularity and availability of tobacco in Holland.

The shaped plaque has a raised molded border decorated with a series of alternating painted panels of flowers and Chinese auspicious objects. The central scene is painted with a slightly off-center table with a vase filled with flowers and a large parrot perched on the branches. Several flying bugs can be seen around the flowers. To the left is a gardener with two watering pots at his feet. The whole in a puce, yellow and green palette. The top is surmounted with a blue shell pierced with a suspension hole. The exterior rim of the plaque in blue.
Dimensions: 8 7/8 inches high x 9 3/4 inches x 1/2 inch depth.

Condition Details:
There are two small chips to the plate's rim, wear and fritting to the entirety of the plate's rim and footrim, and some very light rubbing to the glaze in the bowl. Otherwise, there are some fine & light surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age.

This is a very rare square dish from the famous "Earl of Camden" service made by the Derby Porcelain Company in 1795. The service was painted with typical English roses by William Billingsley, one of Britain's most famous painters, and responsible for exactly this type of rose painting on British porcelain.

The Derby Porcelain Company, later called Royal Crown Derby, is currently the oldest British porcelain factory still in production. The Derby pottery was one of the most prominent potteries right from the start of English porcelain production in the mid 1700s to today, and the factory went through many iterations. In the 1820s, it was called "Bloor Derby" as it came under the ownership of Robert Bloor; this factory later closed but its legacy was continued under the ownership of a group of employees, and later this was merged into a new factory called Royal Crown Derby, which is still in operation today and still carries forward some of the oldest patterns that have made it famous over the centuries.
William Billingsley was a brilliant but notoriously difficult man who left behind a trail of debts, broken hearts and mystery - but he was also one of the most important people in the history British porcelain. Billingsley revolutionised the way British decorators painted flowers; he added a freedom and artistry that now singles out British flower painting, and he created a new technique for painting roses, which you can see in this design. Billingsley worked at Derby, Worcester and Mansfield. He also set up his own potteries in Pinxton and Nantgarw and created some of the best porcelain ever made, but racking up great debts, before running off in the dead of night and ending his days at Coalport painting flowers.
Items painted by William Billingsley are rare and very much in demand - together with Thomas Baxter's work they are probably among the most desired pieces of British porcelain.
The Earl of Camden service was a huge service ordered by Lady Camden in 1795. It had to be produced under great, and unrealistic, time pressure and was notoriously late, much to Lady Camden's chagrin. She wanted the service to be produced by only the best artisans and therefore William Billingsley was tasked with painting all items - but it is thought that when it was clear the deadline was impossible to make, he enlisted the help of John Brewer for some of the last items, such as the ice pails. This plate shows the typical "Billingsley" roses: a beautiful naturally flowing garland of English roses interspersed with buds, trailing around a crisp gilt ribbon. The way the roses link into each other, the way each individual one is completely different, the light effects achieved by rubbing out some of the pink paint, and the very fine buds and foliage all point to these being from Billingsley's hand.
