A small porcelain basket in Rococo Revival style with scroll and shell moulded borders, pierced handles on both ends, a pale yellow twig handle, a French blue ground with pale yellow foliage and a fine landscape painting in the centre.
This would make a perfect gift as a trinket dish - these baskets were often used to collect visting cards from guests.

Condition: excellent
The Samuel Alcock factory was operative in Staffordshire between 1822 and 1856, after which it was bought by Sir James Duke and Nephews. The factory started as a partnership between the young Samuel Alcock and the older Ralph Stevenson, who provided the factory and capital. Alcock quickly took the factory to great heights, building one of the biggest factories of its time. Alcock jumped on the new Rococo Revival fashion and served a huge new middle class market. This is a very charming coffee cup trio made by Belleek in the Shamrock design, consisting of a coffee cup, a saucer and a little cake plate. It has the 2nd Black Mark, which was used between 1891 and 1926. Given the quality of the porcelain we think the date of production is probably closer to 1891 than 1926.
If you ever thought Belleek fine china looks, sounds and feels unique, you are right. There is a back story to this extraordinarily fine Irish eggshell porcelain, which has an unusually high amount of "frit" and therefore is thinner and finer than any other china.

Depiction of the merely cloth-covered, bearded and crowned god Hephaestus (Roman: Vulcanus) seated centrally on a rock, holding a long-handled hammer beside him and looking off to the side, surrounded by winged putti representing activities from his trade: Patronizing the entire artistic spectrum of metalworking, including the production of jewelry, weapons, sacred-ritual and profane utilitarian objects, the one helping putto to his right is busy firing a cannon made of metal, to his left another putto is forging on an anvil with the help of a hammer and tongs, in front of him, at his feet are presented ornately crafted war ornaments such as a helmet and shield, at the back a putto holds small torches in both hands.
