About the Item

A stunning antique hand painted French porcelain cabinet plate with a scene of a couple by renowned porcelain maker Sevres and dating around 1848. The finely made plate is of rounded form with a raised scalloped rim which has been richly gilded with scroll and floral garland patterning on a deep blue/black ground. The centre of the plate is finely hand painted with an interior scene, possibly a tavern, with a young maiden seated in front of an open fire and warming up the contents of a bottle. A young man holding a pipe rests his left hand on her shoulder and appears to be in conversation with her. The plate is painted in colored enamels, and the scene is indistinctly signed. The plate has various printed Sevres marks to the base including one with the date 1848 and another in red reading Chateau des Tuileries. A stunning display piece. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market In good condition with light wear associated with age and use. Minor rubbing to the gilding.
