Antique Rookwood Pottery Hand Painted Vessel Gorham Engraved Silver Decoration
Located in Cincinnati, OH
This late 19th century glazed earthenware mug was crafted in the studios of Cincinnati Ohio's renowned Rookwood Pottery Company and has a traditional form with an ear-shaped handle having a thumb rest. The exterior of the piece is finished in standard glaze and features hand painted decoration executed by highly regarded artist William Purcell McDonald (1864-1931). The decor has an appealing wine harvest theme consisting of grape vines that snake across the surface. The vines are studded with leaves in various shades of green along with two dangling clusters of plump reddish grapes. McDonald's application of paint is slightly raised in places giving the image a dimensional quality. The mug is further ornamented with an ornate silver overlay manufactured by Gorham. The silver decoration covers the handle and rim and includes a series of large etched foliate scrolls and flowers that extend across the body. There is also an eye-catching latticed area that provides a strong visual contrast with the gentle curving motifs found on the other parts of the silver overlay. The underside of the mug has an impressed RP mark along with shape 422 and the letter W. It also carries the incised initials of the artist - W. P. McD - and the letter L. The underside of the silver foot rim is stamped Gorham Manufacturing Co. along with a hand engraved mark reading S 1274 S. This highly collectible Rookwood silver...

19th Century Pair of Polish/German Stoneware Figures
Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting a lovely 19th century pair of Polish/German stoneware figures. Quite rare! Not a matching pair but similarly themed, with the little girl holding a basket of kittens with one kitten climbing up her front and the other of a little boy climbing a tree stump with a snail at the base. The ‘Little Girl’ is painted stoneware or earthenware and we are of the opinion is Polish in origin (or possibly Russian). It does not have any identifiable markings but it was originally with another similar style figurine (not included in this sale) which had markings that we were of the opinion were Polish markings. The ‘Little Boy’ is painted pottery and we are of the opinion that it is either Polish or German in origin. It is slightly different in style an texture to the girl and has a more ‘bisque’ finish. The facial features are more defined and remind me of German bisque dolls...

Six Wedgwood Majolica Argenta 'Lincoln' Pattern Dessert Dishes
Located in Fort Lauderdale, FL
Six Wedgwood majolica Argenta palette ‘Lincoln' pattern dessert plates with finely molded maroon prunus blossoms and dark taupe pine branches surrounded by a yellow Greek key border. The dishes are decorated in the japonisme style and feature the “Three Friends of Winter” motif, an Asian artistic convention showing the pine, plum, and bamboo together to represent steadfastness, perseverance, and resilience. The Wedgwood factory introduced muted Argenta glazes to its majolicas in the 1880s to keep up with ever-changing fashions. The Argenta glaze color palette was more subdued than that of traditionally vibrant majolica, and was thus more appealing to the Aesthetic Movement japonisme style that pervaded the market. These Argenta majolica dessert dishes...

19th Century Minton’s Art Pottery Studio Kensington Gore Hand-Painted Charger
Located in Cincinnati, OH
This large hand-painted charger was made by Mintons Art Pottery Studio of Kensington Gore, London. The studio traces its origins to the renowned earthenware and fine bone china factory Minton, located in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire England. Colin Minton Campbell, descendant of founder Thomas Minton, took over company management in 1858 and went on to establish Mintons Art Pottery Studio in 1871 for the purpose of hand decorating pottery and tiles. The studio initially operated under the direction of painter and book illustrator William Stephen Coleman and drew upon the talents of artists studying at the Kensington's National Art Training School, now known as the Royal College of Art, as well as those of well-regarded Continental artists. The company was short lived as it was destroyed by an accidental fire in 1875 and was not rebuilt. This large earthenware charger has been hand-painted in polychrome enamel and depicts two young children at play in the nursery. The scene includes multiple colors and textures and features a cherubic toddler seated upon a bed alongside a young girl standing on a blue footstool...

Trophy Plate, Wedgwood, circa 1900
Located in Melbourne, Victoria
Trophy plates were a particularly Victorian development at Wedgwood, taking the use of classical ornament to its absolute limit. Over 2,000 individual sprigs were made, applied, and undercut to produce this plate. Only the best decorators made these, beginning with Thomas Lovatt in the late 19th century - this is an example of his work. The central relief depicts Bellerophon with Pegasus. Bellerophon was a noble hero of Corinth, known for his strength and bravery. He was the son of Glaucus and the grandson of Sisyphus, though some myths suggest he was actually the son of Poseidon. Bellerophon was a skilled warrior and sought to accomplish great deeds. Pegasus was a magnificent, winged horse born from the blood of the Gorgon Medusa...

Rare Dutch Church Interior Rozenburg Porcelain Tile Painting After J. Bosboom
Located in Lisse, NL
Beautiful large tile painting of a Gothic church interior by W.B. van Horssen (1863-1931). We very recently purchased a small collection of very rare antique plaques, tiles and vases by some of the best known maker's in the history of Dutch ceramics. This unique, hand-crafted and hand-painted work of art is the first one of that collection and this stunning and rare, single tiles plaque is in its original wooden frame. Because of their contrasting colors, the frame and tile painting go together really well. And these are in fact two works of art, because both the stunningly hand-painted tile and the wooden frame are as good as they come. With the borders of the frame coming as far outward as they do and the Gothic church interior that is drawing your attention deep into the back of the church, they really complement each other. However beautiful the frame is, this antique ofcourse is about the painting and this particular painting is by one of Rozenburg's finest (Wijnand Bastiaan van Horssen) who has perfectly managed to enhance the depth that is already in this composition, thus creating a visual effect that is an absolute joy to look at. By the way, the price that you see on the 'sticker' that the former owner put on the back after he had purchased this piece was put there in the 'old days' when we still had the Dutch guilder. The original painting of the Nieuwe Kerk in the Hague Holland (built in circa 1650) was by J. Bosboom. Besides one small old crack and a few minor imperfections to the frame, this unique and wonderful work of art is in very good condition still and may it grace the home or chapel of a Gothic style enthousiast soon. Mind you, because of their relative fragility very few of these amazing and high value works of art are still around. Rozenburg of the Hague, where this unique tile painting was created, was always one of the greats in Dutch ceramics and many of their works grace museums all over Europe. Rozenburg’s shareholders included the likes of the marine painter H.W. Mesdag (1831-1915) and the poet and literary critic Carel Vosmaer (1826-1888), and its tile painters numbered rising artists like Willem de Zwart...
