A RARE GEORGE III COMBINATION ARGYLE/BACHELOR TEAPOT MADE IN LONDON IN 1805 BY JOHN EMES. This piece stands on an oval, stepped, pedestal foot decorated with reeding. The oval vase shaped body rises to a reeded rim and is engraved with a contemporary Crest. The domed, pull-off, cover terminates in a ball finial and this piece has an elegant swan neck spout and fruit wood handle. The interior displays a conical central section, with cap, for filling with hot water or coal, so that the heating element would keep the sauce warm. This piece is unusual, as the central heating section can be removed, so that it could be used as a bachelor coffee pot. This piece is in excellent condition and is well marked on the base, cover, conical section and its cap. John Emes was a prolific, very fine, silversmith whose work shows a taste for elegant design and fine finish. He had workshops at Amen Corner...

We are delighted to offer this wonderful little solid silver tea caddy spoon made by Joseph Willmore in Birmingham, 1814. The spoon is beautifully crafted in the form of a single vine leaf with an accurate and intricate design ranging from the stem (handle) of the leaf to the different textures (stippled & embossed silver) on the surface of the spoon. The centre of the spoon is embossed in the form of a bunch of grapes with its stem conjoining to the thicker vine handle. We are delighted to have acquired and be able to offer this pair of solid silver Georgian asparagus tongs made by William Eley & William Fearn in London, 1820. The tongs feature a wonderful classical style with the terminals of the handles presenting a scalloped design and the entire edge accented by a contrasting border formed by two fine lines. A noteworthy crest is present on the end of the handle with it bearing the crest of Leveson-Gower ('wolf statant collared and chained') and the other crest for the Sutherland Clan, described as a 'cat-a-mountain salient'. The tongs were eventually discovered at Dunrobin Castle which is situated in Sutherland (Highland area of Scottland), and was/is a very ornate and extravagant castle that is still standing today. This is an exceptional and very rare antique English George III sterling silver teapot by the world-famous silversmith, Paul Storr, and bearing hallmarks for 1817. This splendid teapot is of a delightful shape and it is profusely chased with half ribbed fluting decoration. It is further embellished with wonderful foliate motifs below and above the spout and stunning gadrooned shaped borders to the top of the teapot and the base. The remarkable quality flush hinged lid is also beautifully surmounted by a delightful round finial. An exceptional, fine antique George IV English sterling silver three piece tea service / set made by Charles Thomas Fox; part of our silver teaware collection This exceptional antique sterling silver three piece tea service consists of a teapot, cream jug and sugar bowl. Each piece has an oval rounded compressed form on to a collet base and four bracket style feet. The body of each piece is embellished with chased flower and foliate decoration incorporating a shaped cartouche to either side, each displaying a contemporary bright cut engraved crest of a mower with his scythe proper habited*. The upper rim of each piece is encompassed with a gadroon decorated border. The swept shoulders and the swan necked spout of the teapot are further ornamented with chased floral and scrolling leaf decoration. The original hinged hallmarked cover of the teapot is surmounted with a silver flower and leaf decorated finial. The teapot is fitted with a C scroll sterling silver handle ornamented with an impressive leaf design incorporated into a scrolling thumbpiece. The cream jug and sugar bowl have leaf decorated sterling silver C scroll handles and retain the original gilt interiors. Each piece is supported by four impressive bracket style feet accented with floral and paw ornamentation in the classic Regency style. The components of this exceptional antique teaware set were crafted by the renowned London silversmith Charles Thomas Fox. * The crest pertains to the Pilkington family, who are found in the Counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire, although other families bearing the name are found further afield and a similar crest. Whether these families are genealogically connected is not known. The Pilkingtons, of Rivington in the County of Lancashire are probably the more ancient and senior line. Legend has it that a member of the family (which was said to be one of repute prior to the Norman Conquest of 1066) disguised himself when sought by Norman soldiers as a mower and escaped. A similar legend adheres to another Lancashire family, the De Traffords or Traffords in which a member of that family avoided capture by the Parliamentarians during the Civil War of the 17th Century by disguising himself as simple-minded thresher wielding a frail rather than the Pilkington's scythe. There is certainly a possibility that this tea service was in the possession the baronetcy family of Pilkington, of Stanley in the County of Yorkshire who descended from Sir Alexander de Pilkington who held lands at Rivington during the reign of King Henry III. The baronet at the time of the manufacture of this tea service was Sir William Pilkington, the 8th Baronet (baptised 14th November 1775 died 30th 1850). This is a wonderful English antique George III sterling silver 10 inch salver, by the world famous silversmith Paul Storr. It has clear hallmarks for London 1811 and the makers mark of Paul Storr. It is typical of his work with the raised gadrooned rim with anthemion at intervals, on four fabulous foliate bracket feet. The salver is engraved with a crest and motto and the underside is later engraved Charlotte J. Parke from C. J. Parke, March 1893' The centre is engraved with a crest above a motto 'True and Fast' and I have researched this crest: The Crest of Parke The crest as engraved upon this George III English Sterling Silver Footed Salver by Paul Storr hallmarked London 1811 is that of the family of Parke. It may be blazoned as follows: Crest: A stag’s head couped sable holding in the mouth a key or Motto: True and fast The family of Parke originally hailed from the County of Cumberland in the northeast of England1 later settling in the County of Dorset at Henbury House, Sturminster Marshal, near Wimborne. Given the evidence of the inscription found on the underside of the salver ‘Charlotte J. Parke from C. J. Parke, March 1893’ it was undoubtedly at one time in the possession of Charles Joseph Parke (died 9th March 1893) of Henbury House aforesaid and gifted to Charlotte Josephine Parke (baptised 4th January 1857 died 2nd January 1941) his third daughter by his wife, Ellen Mary Ethelston. I would venture the following hypothesis that the salver was bequeathed to Charlotte in her father’s will that was granted probate at London on the 20th May 1893. The ‘March 1893’ of the inscription acts as a remembrance of the month of the death of her father. It was noted that Charlotte’s father left an estate worth some £66,892, 19 shillings and one pence, a very considerable sum in the last decade of the 19th Century and even thereafter. Charlotte never married and was living at the time of her death at The Coppice, Sixpenny Handley in the County of Dorset. Her will was proved for probate at Llandudno on the 25th March 1941. She left an estate worth £18,866, 10 shillings and 4 pence. Again, a comfortable sum in 1941. See the photo of Henbury House, Sturminster Marshal, near Wimborne, Co. Dorset. The former seat of the Parke family. The house was destroyed by fire, the remains of which were demolished in the 1990's.
