Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS
The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.
Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.
Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer.
Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.
The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by legendary manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.
As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.
Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.

A wonderful, unique, beautifully glazed, quite rare, and special double-faced "Haniwa" pottery sculpture by American California studio pottery master ceramists Stan Bitters whose work was instrumental in shaping the organic modernist movement in the 1960s.
Bitters received his Bachelor of Arts degree in painting from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1958.
He also studied under Peter Voulkos at Otis College. After graduating, he worked for Hans Sumpf as the company's resident artist. During this time he created architectural murals, tiles, birdhouses, planters, and sculptural objects – designs that would earn him recognition later on as a pioneer of the organic modernist craft movement - many still some of the most iconic designs today.
Stan Bitters' work was featured as a part of the prestigious California Design series of exhibitions and annuals that chronicled art and design in California from 1954-1976. His works were also featured as part of a group show entitled Golden State of Craft 1960-1985 at the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles, CA. This show was part of Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980, an unprecedented collaboration of more than 60 museums and other cultural institutions in Southern California, celebrating the birth of the Los Angeles art scene. Swedish Floral Organic Modern Ceramic Wall Plate / Centerpiece, 1950s

Vintage handmade fully glazed Swedich midcentury modern wall platter / centrepiece with organic, floral decor depicting a gazelle with a direct gaze surrounded by vegetation in brown, ochre, green, white and bright pink colors on a striped dark blue background created with the experimental sgraffito technique that Tilgmans became famous for. Designed and handpainted in the late 1950s by Eivor Lang and manufactured by German/Finnish Paul Harald Tilgman in his workshop in the small town of Kortedala close to Gothenburg, Sweden. Milky white glaze on the base and sides with curved, muted green decor framing the image along the edge. Three holes for hanging - two in use with metal wire. Signed under base. An handpainted piece in beautiful condition.
Paul Harald “Harry” Tilgmann was born in Dresden, Germany in 1904 and emigrated to Sweden during WWII where he started Tilgmans Keramik (= Ceramics) in 1948 in the small town of Utbynäs close to Gothenburg. Tilgman had 16 employees working for him and when he hired the Polish refugee Marian Zawadzki (1912-1978) as artistic director in 1953, Tilgman Keramik started experimenting with the distinct sgraffito technique. The sgraffito technique consists of carving fine lines into the background of a design through a light colored glaze down to a dark grey clay slip. This created a unique textured ground which has become a style associated with Tilgmans Keramik in particular. The decorative elements also appear to be outlined with a carved line and then hand painted with overglazes where birds, fish, flowers, butterflies and other animals were a common theme. A wonderfully made and beautifully designed Mid-Century Modern pottery charger by famed California potter and sculptor Robert Maxwell.
Maxwell co-founded Earthgender pottery with fellow potter David Cressey.
This charger/platter was made at his Venice beach, California Pottery studio in the early 1960s as verified by his wife. It is a very rare piece in respect to design, pattern, and sheer Size/heft (it is a very heavy work). We have not seen another quite like it.
Apparently, he only made a few with some filled with melted glass to create the design/pattern.
Signed by Maxwell on the base.
Would clearly be a great addition to any mid-century pottery/ceramics collection...

Pair of Ceramic Vases by Guido Andlovitz for S.C.I. Levano

Originally designed by architect, designer and artistic director Guido Andlovitz in 1936 for Società Ceramica Italiana Laveno, this pair of vases are indeed the rarest of finds. The vases were manufactured in 1942, as attested to by the marking "N - 42" on the base of each vase. The gold rims and aquatic scenes that surround each vase, are unique to each piece and were painted by hand in 1943. They are both signed by the artist "Miruccia". One of the vases has the words “Anni di Guerra” (Year of War) written on the base in reference to the Second World War .
Founded in Laveno in 1856 by Severino Revelli and some former employees of the "Richard" manufacturer in Milan. The "SCI" (Italian Ceramic Society) began its activity as a manufacturer of wall tiles and fine tableware. In 1883 it became a limited company and obtained its first successes at numerous national exhibitions. In 1895, Cavalier Luciano Scotti took over the company and, thanks to his intuition and his entrepreneurial skills, the factory grew substantially in a few years. In those years, some Liberty-style pieces designed by Giorgio Spertini, the author of noteworthy elegant "whiplash" creations, were created in the Laveno factory. In 1906 "SCI" presented numerous works at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Milan. Other collaborators from the beginning of the century were Silvio and Piero De Ambrosis, Felice Palucco, Giancarlo Jacopini and the brothers Marco and Luigi Raggiori. However, it was in 1923 that, under the direction of Guido Andlovitz, the company reached the peak of its fame and in 1925 was a resounding success at the 2nd Monza Biennale. Andlovitz, who collaborated with the manufacturer for almost forty years, applied to the production process the principle of seriality, a concept also put into effect by Giò Ponti at "Richard-Ginori", adopting various types of decoration which, although moulded and decal stamped, still retained an undeniable elegance. In 1924 the "Società Ceramica Revelli" became a consortium with the "SCI", the partnership would continue until 1932 and saw Franco Revelli's company marketing pottery and table porcelain on behalf of "SCI". From 1925 porcelain and crockery began to appear in the factory's catalogs. In 1927 the company was present at the 3rd Biennial of Decorative Arts in Monza. Between the end of the 1920's and the beginning of the 1930's, the decorators Giuseppe Bellorini and Daniela Ferretto began to collaborate with the "SCI". As of 1932 the company managed two factories: that of Laveno, which, with over 1300 employees, produced strong pottery, tableware and artistic ceramics and the smaller factory of Verbano, which employed about 400 people and produced, in addition to ceramics for the electrotechnical industry, excellent table porcelain. The products were marketed in the company owned stores in Rome, Genoa and Naples. This was an initiative realised by Andlovitz himself. In the mid-thirties, the decorators Ada Corsi and Ida Fonini among others, collaborated with the "SCI". From 1936 to 1940 the artistic direction of the company was entrusted to the sculptor and modeler Angelo Biancini. In 1939 about 1300 people worked in the Laveno plant and in 1951 about 2300. Famed California Mid-Century Modern artist Beatrice wood signed bowl featuring her highly coveted deep ash blue iridescent lustre/luster glaze. In certain light, the glaze radiates as a purple hue in some areas. The glaze runs down the sides and gathers in areas underneath.
This piece comes with an interesting history/ provenance. This piece came from Beatrice's personal collection. She was using it as a coin and key holder in her Ojai house which accounts for the cracks in the glaze. It was gifted to Maria Anderson who assisted Beatrice around her home. We considered having the work restored but because of its history feel that it offers more value to the next owner as shown. This was apparently the condition it was given in as Wood was famous for noting about her work that objects that are not quite perfect are simply that...perfect because of their imperfections. A very Wabi-Sabi view. Flawed Beauty.
We love the piece and the history.
Signed with her customary "Beato" on the underside.
