This is an Antique Soumak ( Sumak, Sumac ) Kilim from the Caucasus region with a rare and beautiful color composition.
Of the four countries that make up the Caucasus, Azerbaijan produces the most kilims, and the land has a long history of weaving. The nomadic tribes wove kilims and carpets as well as a wide range of storage bags and sacks, such as saffrash, khurgin and chula, and donkey and horse trappings. Smaller bags for salt, utensils, and other items are also common. Not only are the Azerbaijani weavers prolific, but they also employ many techniques at the loom. These include slitweave- known locally by the word Kilim, warp-faced patterning (jajim), supplementary weft (zili), weft wrapping (popularly known as soumak), and extra weft wrapping (verneh). Furthermore, flatweaves are defined by regional names such as palas and shadda, so it is possible to ascribe a variety of weaving names to particular provenances as follows: soumaks are made in Kuba, palas, and kilims in Hajikabul, zili in Khizy, verneh and zili in Kazakh, shadda, verneh and zili in Barda, jajim in Agjabedi, and palas and kilims in Jabrail.
Soumak weave is a technique in which weft threads are added to a plain weave fabric, and one or two warp threads are wound from the front to the back. The resulting Kilim is denser and firmer, giving it a unique feel and look. This technique is commonly used in the Caucasus region.
Soumak kilims have a very beautiful contrast between orange that shines like the sun, deep purple-tinged indigo, and astringent dark red. You can also see the unevenly dyed abrage in this Soumak, which is like a magic carpet with an oriental atmosphere. Features of the Caucasian Kilim, such as the unique cosmic geometric floral pattern, are also found in this Soumak which has a bright look, but it also has a faded and textured feel, so it can be used in a good old atmosphere.
The woven fabric is particularly solid, so it is recommended for use in a solid living room or under a dining table without moving or twisting. A nice Kilim under a long wooden dining table.

Early state flags fall between very scarce and extraordinarily rare in the antiques marketplace. One primary reason for this is that most states, even if they existed during the 18th or 19th century, didn’t actually adopt flags until the early 20th century. The Maryland State Legislature, for example, didn’t find need for a state banner until 1904, in spite of the fact that Maryland was one of the original 13 colonies. Other states had crests or symbols that were tied to the state legislature in some way, or to local patriotism, but didn't accept an official design until many years following statehood.
In the case of California, the "Bear Flag," as all California state flags and variations thereof are often called, is based on a significant early example. The eldest surviving Bear Flag is thought to date to the 1846 “Bear Flag Revolt”. This occurred when Major John Frémont arrived in the state on a so-called mission to reach the Pacific and encouraged an uprising against Mexican rule in the territory. Frémont claimed himself military governor of the California Republic and was brought up on charges of treason for his actions, but was pardoned by President James Polk. Polk was an expansionist and Frémont’s actions brought California to statehood in 1850, immediately following the 1849 Gold Rush.
The original Bear Flag was designed and made by William L. Todd, a first cousin to Abraham Lincoln’s wife, Mary Todd. Painted on cotton, it had a white field with a red stripe along the bottom, just like the modern design. The star image was taken from what was known as the “California Lone Star Flag”, flown during California's previous, 1836 revolt. Constructed in a 7x7 block structure, each 11" x 11" square was created by a different individual—likely members of a sewing society or women’s group—making this quilt not only a masterwork of craftsmanship but a collaborative historical artifact. The vibrant color palette includes striking combinations of turquoise, pink, yellow, navy, and green, giving the quilt dynamic visual appeal. Elaborate herringbone embroidery connects each block, showcasing both unity and individuality in the design. Backed with cotton and discovered in New England, this piece was possibly crafted in Pennsylvania in the early 20th century.
