Amazing quality and excellent condition, heavy bronze chandelier. This early 1900s and all handcrafted bronze chandelier is of amazing quality and highly decorative at the same time. We don't know the actual meaning of these templar or Robin Hood-like watchman who are holding up their lights for you, but they are a marvelous sight to see and the condition of this antique and sizable fixture is among the best we have ever seen. The handcrafted and hand-engraved glass shades are the perfect finish to this six light chandelier. Mind you, our photos were taken prior to our rewiring procedures, because we did not yet know which country this amazing fixture will go to. This is also the reason why in our images only one group of three lights is working. Finally, the patina of this fixture combined with the engraved transparent shades creates a sight and an atmosphere that will never fail to impress. They just don't make em like this anymore. This rare and amazing bronze fixture is great value for money. Antique Arts & Crafts Alabaster & Brass w. Swallow Birds Pendant / Light Fixture
Located in Lisse, NL
Stunning mineral stone pendant with wonderful colors in a unique brass frame. The designer and artist who created this Arts & Crafts work of lighting art must have been inspired by the wonderful colors that mother nature has to offer in the late afternoons and evenings in the summer. Especially the copper red light that the sun creates when disappearing under the horizon seems the source of inspiration for this artist. With the colors in this particular alabaster shade AND in the brass 'frame' corresponding with the marvelous colors at sundown this one of a kind pendant really is a joy to own and to look at. In our experience it is also at that time of day that swallows are the most active. Just like the embossed swallows in this shade we too have seen them circling above and around a swimming pool in the Canary Islands. By the way, the workmanship that has gone into hand-crafting this remarkable chandelier is of a level that you don't find anymore in this day and age. Never mind the amount of time it must have taken to first hand-draw and then completely hand-craft this gem. We have said it many times before and we will say it again here: both with the light switched on and off, the colors in this alabaster shade are much warmer and much more beautiful than in our photos. You can take our word for it. Because of the many colors and 'patches' one could also say that this pendant (when looking at it from different sides and angles) has many faces. That too is the beauty of surrounding yourself with truly natural materials. Together with the hand hammered (or embossed) swallows this alabaster shade pendant...

Antique White Alabaster & Black Veins Pendant Chandelier W. Mint Shade & Canopy
Located in Lisse, NL
Exceptional alabaster pendant with a perfect shade and canopy. Over the years we have seen and sold a number of alabaster pendants that were even better than the top quality ones that we sell regularly and this here specimen too fits that bill. This best quality specimen really ticks all the boxes. First of all, it has the best design AND size alabaster shade. A shade of this timeless design and size can be used virtually everywhere, from the kitchen to the entrance and from your landing or small stairwell to the master bedroom. With this practical size and timeless design pendant you simply cannot go wrong. Firstly, because it was created in the earliest years of the 1900s with just a hint of that European Arts and Crafts design in the smoothly rounded upper edge. This specimen was created only a few years before the designs became much more geometrical. Secondly, this alabaster pendant has the perfect division of black veins that makes the better antique ones stand out from others too. Thirdly, both this striking alabaster shade and the original canopy are in superb condition. This means that there are no chips or cracks whatsoever in the perfect shade and that it is so structurally sound that it actually rings like a bell when you strike it. On top of that both the shade and canopy also have the most amazing polished and scratchless surface. Fourthly, the three classy bronze suspension points perfectly complement the color of the original beige rope and knot. Both on and off this pendant really is an absolute joy to look at and although we have said it many times before, we will say it again here, but in real life this special antique pendant too is even better looking than in our photos. Also, because the more translucent veins and patches create patterns that are unlike anything you ever saw. This finest of alabaster fixtures is rewired to the highest standard for safe and immediate usage in the USA as well and you can use a regular American bulb of up to 100 watts, but we would go with 70 watts (like we did in our photos), because that will suffice for every ocassion, especially when you use a 'dimmer switch'. If you like this perfect and unique alabaster pendant...

Large Arts and Crafts White Alabaster and Black Veins Pendant / Flush Mount 1910
Located in Lisse, NL
Rare and beautiful, black and white alabaster antique light fixture. This unique design and good condition Arts & Crafts pendant is another one of our recent great finds. With antique light fixtures in general and alabaster ones in partical being one of our specialities, we are always thrilled to find a design that we have never seen before. This probably unique design was almost certainly used in an entry hall or bedroom of an Arts & Crafts era mansion. With the more than average number of black veins in this predominantly white shade, this antique light looks even more impressive. Both the perfect matching bronzed chain and canopy are replacements and as you can see they complement this striking light really well. Because of a chip to the outside of the lower alabaster ring...

Antique Arts and Crafts Era Alabaster Pendant w. Matching Canopy & Original Rope
Located in Lisse, NL
Timeless and beautiful design antique alabaster pendant, ca. 1910 With early 20th century light fixtures as one of our specialities, we have learned that certain shapes are more sought after than others. This relatively 'calm' and very classy design probably is among the most desirable and these white alabaster lights usually get picked up by our interior designer clients who immediately see the potential. This particular alabaster fixture with its very stylish shade with a high edge and a rare curvy pattern dates from the European Art and Crafts era. The calm (or serene) design makes this good size pendant special, but the combination of more and lesser translucent veins and patches in the natural mineral stone makes this antique light an even bigger joy to look at. Apart from one minor repair to a crack in the high edge (one that most people will never notice) this unique alabaster pendant is in very good condition However, because of this repair it is not perfect and therefor we have dropped the price by about one third. We have said it before and we'll say it again here, but in real life this special antique pendant too is even better looking than in our photos. You can, again, take our word for it. This fine Arts and Crafts fixture...

Antique, Vintage and Contemporary Chandeliers and Pendant Lights

Chandeliers — simple in form, inspired by candelabras and originally made of wood or iron — first made an appearance in early churches. For those wealthy enough to afford them for their homes in the medieval period, a chandelier's suspended lights likely exuded imminent danger, as lit candles served as the light source for fixtures of the era. Things have thankfully changed since then, and antique and vintage chandeliers and pendant lights are popular in many interiors today.

While gas lighting during the late 18th century represented an upgrade for chandeliers — and gas lamps would long inspire Danish architect and pioneering modernist lighting designer Poul Henningsen — it would eventually be replaced with the familiar electric lighting of today.

The key difference between a pendant light and a chandelier is that a pendant incorporates only a single bulb into its design. Don’t mistake this for simplicity, however. An Art Deco–styled homage to Sputnik from Murano glass artisans Giovanni Dalla Fina (note: there is more than one lighting fixture that shares its name with the iconic mid-century-era satellite — see Gino Sarfatti’s design too), with handcrafted decorative elements supported by a chrome frame, is just one stunning example of the elaborate engineering that can be incorporated into every component of a chandelier.

Chandeliers have evolved over time, but their classic elegance has remained unchanged. Not only will the right chandelier prove impressive in a given room, but it can also offer a certain sense of practicality. These fixtures can easily illuminate an entire space, while their elevated position prevents them from creating glare or straining one’s eyes. Certain materials, like glass, can complement naturally lit settings without stealing the show. Brass, on the other hand, can introduce an alluring, warm glow. While LEDs have earned a bad reputation for their perceived harsh bluish lights and a loss of brightness over their life span, the right design choices can help harness their lighting potential and create the perfect mood. A careful approach to lighting can transform your room into a peaceful and cozy nook, ideal for napping, reading or working.

For midsize spaces, a wall light or sconce can pull the room together and get the lighting job done. Perforated steel rings underneath five bands of handspun aluminum support a rich diffusion of light within Alvar Aalto's Beehive pendant light, but if you’re looking to brighten a more modest room, perhaps a minimalist solution is what you’re after. The mid-century modern furniture designer Charlotte Perriand devised her CP-1 wall lamps in the 1960s, in which a repositioning of sheet-metal plates can redirect light as needed.

The versatility and variability of these lighting staples mean that, when it comes to finding something like the perfect chandelier, you’ll never be left hanging. From the whimsical — like the work of Beau & Bien’s Sylvie Maréchal, frequently inspired by her dreams — to the classic beauty of Paul Ferrante's fixtures, there is a style for every room. With designs for pendant lights and chandeliers across eras, colors and materials, you’ll never run out of options to explore on 1stDibs.
