Swedish Modern, with its simplified lines and lack of excessive ornamentation, was a counter reaction to the earlier, more decorative design movements such as Art Deco. In comparison, as this floor lamp demonstrates, the mid-century era brought streamlined modernism to Sweden as well.
Börje Claes designed this lamp model with both table and floor lamp versions. In this floor lamp version he combined a classical shape with carefully thought out proportions and Swedish craftsmanship. The neck’s characteristic curve holding the brass shade defines this model. To counterbalance the defined curve, the rod is straight and stands on a circular base that mirrors the shape of the shade. The inside of the shade is reflective, enhancing the light the lamp emits with a beautiful accompanying effect. While there is a clear attention on the design elements, functionality was of equal importance in the classic “Svensk design” manner, in which form must follow function in order for something to be considered ‘good design’. As such, the lamp’s trumpet shade can be adjusted freely on the vertical axis through a so-called knee joint by the German company OMI. In line with the Functionalist trend of the time, the designer abandoned ornamentation in favour of form. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. There is nothing outstanding, but you might find small scratches and a small dent on the base if you look very closely, and the globe seems to have a small smudge-like flaw inside the bottom side of the glass but very low visibility. Undisputed emblem of elegance and functionality, the Daphine represents the essence of Lumina.
The idea behind the creation of the Daphine lamp is as simple as it is effective: a pivoting diffuser, an articulated arm in two segments and an electromechanical transformer on a cylindrical base between two metal caps.
The Daphine first “saw the light” in a small workshop in Sedriano (Milan province) in 1975 thanks to the skilful hands of Tommaso Cimini, a mechanical engineering expert, and the machines he had retooled for the purpose.
The Daphine springs from Tommaso Cimini’s design philosophy, “Lots of light, not much lamp”, which is still the essence of every product bearing the name of Lumina, the company he set up in 1980.
45 years on, the Daphine’s aesthetic and functionality are unchanged, which goes to show the validity of the original idea.
