Finishing the Hat Collected Lyrics '1954-1981' Comments, by Stephen Sondheim
Located in valatie, NY
Finishing the Hat: Collected Lyrics (1954-1981) with Attendant Comments, Principles, Heresies, Grudges, Whines and Anecdotes by Stephen Sondheim (March 22, 1930 -November 26, 2021). Published by Knopf, 2010. Hardcover with dust jacket. The winner of seven Tonys, an Academy Award, seven Grammys, a Pulitzer Prize and more, Stephen Sondheim's career has spanned more than half a century; his lyrics have become synonymous with musical theater and popular culture. In Finishing the Hat--titled after perhaps his most autobiographical song, from Sunday in the Park with George, Sondheim has not only collected his lyrics for the first time, he is giving readers a rare personal look into his life as well as his remarkable productions. Along with the lyrics for all of his musicals from 1954 to 1981 including: West Side Story, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music and Sweeney Todd, Sondheim treats us to never-before-published songs from each show, songs that were cut or discarded before seeing the light of day. He discusses his relationship with his mentor, Oscar Hammerstein II, and his collaborations with extraordinary talents such as: Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents, Ethel Merman, Richard Rodgers...

Romance and Reason Islamic Transformations of the Classical Past, 1st Ed
Located in valatie, NY
Romance and Reason: Islamic Transformations of the Classical Past by Roberta Casagrande-Kim, Samuel Thrope, and Raquel Ukeles. Princeton University Press, 2018. 1st Ed softcover with gilt edged pages. Within a century of the Arab Muslim conquest of vast territories in the Middle East and North Africa, Islam became the inheritor of the intellectual legacy of classical antiquity. In an epochal cultural transformation between the 8&10th centuries CE, most of what survived in classical Greek literature and thought was translated from Greek into Arabic. This translation movement, sponsored by the ruling Abbasid dynasty, swiftly blossomed into the creative expansion and reimagining of classical ideas that were now integral parts of the Islamic tradition. Romance and Reason, a lavishly illustrated catalogue accompanying the exhibition of the same name at New York University's Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, explores the breadth and depth of Islamic engagement with ancient Greek thought. Drawing on manuscripts and artifacts from the collections of the National Library of Israel and prominent American institutions, the catalogue's essays focus on the portrayal of Alexander the Great as ideal ruler, mystic, lover, and philosopher in Persian poetry...

Earth to Sky: Among Africa's Elephants, a Species in Crisis by Michael Nichols
Located in valatie, NY
Earth to Sky: Among Africa's Elephants, A Species in Crisis by Michael Nichols. Published by Aperture Foundation, Incorporated, 2013. 1st Ed hardcover, no dust jacket as issued. Elephants are among the earth's most sentient beings. They remember, they experience grief and joy, fear and love. Indeed, as our knowledge of these extraordinary creatures increases, the more they transcend all preconceptions of animal behavior. Michael "Nick" Nichols, longtime photographer for National Geographic as well as the magazine's editor-at-large for photography, has been working with African elephants for more than twenty years. In Earth to Sky he tells their story through poignant images that bring us directly into their habitat the lush forests and open savannas, or stark landscapes ravaged by human intervention-to observe the animals' daily engagements and activities. Nichols's photographs are accompanied here by the words of such celebrated figures in the field of conservation as Lain Douglas-Hamilton, J. Michael Fay, Peter Matthiessen, Cynthia Moss, David Quammen, and many others. In addition, Nichols engages us in his photographic journey with personal and informative introductions to each of the book's four chapters-exploring life in the wild, the ivory trade, family interactions, and programs for orphaned elephants. The survival of elephants is under dire threat from humankind, most immediately from the market for ivory. More than twenty-five thousand elephants are slaughtered each year, and their ivory is sold at astronomically high prices to countries such as China, Japan, the Philippines, and Singapore. African elephant refuges are under siege; many park rangers...
