Waterloo - by M. Egerton & G. Hunt, with 24 hand-colored plates
Located in Middletown, NY
Egerton, M. & George Hunt Here and There over the Water: Being Cullings in a Trip to the Netherlands. (The Field of Battle and Monuments - Waterloo, &c.) by Omnium Gatherum. London: George Hunt, 1825. 4to; 10 x 8 3/8 in. (253 x 212 mm); (2), 34 pp, 28 plates by George Hunt after M. Egerton, including 24 hand-colored engraved and aquatint plates and four plates (21-24) of Waterloo memorials uncolored. Modern half morocco binding, title gilt, spine sunned. Occasional offsetting from plates, otherwise a fine copy. [Abbey Travel 188; Tooley 207]. An uncommon aquatint work, illustrating a regency excursion to the Low Countries. Egerton was a humorous designer and social satirist active in London between 1820 and 1829, who supplied drawings to members of the print trade (including the Hunts and Pyall) for engraving. For this project he begins his tour at Ostend, where he was stuck for a day as it was a Sunday. He took time to describe the people's custom-house hotel and the 'Purgatory Gate' attached to the church (destroyed in a fire later in the nineteenth century) before traveling the next day by 'Great Coach' and barge to Ghent, observing the 'Belgic Military' various 'Diligences' and peasant costumes before continuing onto Brussels. Here he examined the Market Pavilion of the Prince of Orange before traveling on the next leg of the journey, which takes the artist once more to Ghent, where he describes and illustrates the Exchange. Egerton then returns to Brussels to view the Palace of Schoonenberg and then on to the main reason for his excursion: a trip to Waterloo, taking in all the main sites of the battle, including graves and monuments. Michael Egerton flourished between 1821 and 1828 and produced a number of caricatures, mainly of social comedy, sporting scenes, and jokes on the weather; almost all his work was engraved by George Hunt. OCLC records six copies in North America at Harvard Yale New York Public Library, Brown Claremont College, and the Art Institute of Chicago. "A tourist (Egerton) soars high above birds and the Channel, a vignetted strip of water which a steam-packet and sailing vessel are traversing. He is propelled by steam from a big Patent kettle strapped to his back; from a large spout in the form of a bird's head black smoke drifts behind him. He holds out in his right hand a pair of lazy-tongs, in his left he holds up a plaid travelling-bag marked O.G. He wears a round flat peaked cap, with fashionable white cuffs and collar to his shirt, and white strapped trousers. His legs drift behind him." Miniature Terrestrial Globe Newton & Son London, Post 1833, Ante 1858
Located in Milano, IT
Miniature Terrestrial Globe Newton & Son London, post 1833, ante 1858 Paper, papier-mâché, bronze and wood It measures: sphere diameter 2.95 in (7.6 cm); diameter of the wooden base 6.02 in (15.3 cm); height 8.36 in (21.24 cm). Weight: 2,067 lb. State of conservation: the globe still bears its original paint, but has various small gaps, abrasions and stains on the surface. The globe is hinged with two pins at the meridian circle, which is in turn inserted perpendicular to the horizon circle; this is supported by four semi-arches connected at the bottom by a small goblet-shaped foot, resting on a wooden bell-shaped base. Apart from the wooden base, the entire support structure is made of bronze; on the foot there are the scale reproductions of a compass, a telescope and an open book. The sphere is made of papier-mâché and is covered with twelve printed paper gores. In the North Pacific Ocean the globe bears a cartouche with the inscription (about 30% of the writing is illegible, but the missing parts can be easily integrated based on the rest): NEWTON’S New & Improved TERRESTRIAL Globe Published by Newton & Son 66 Chancery Lane LONDON On the globe, much of central Africa is empty and the great lakes Tanganyika and Victoria are not marked (Europeans would begin to explore the area after 1858). Canada is called "British Territory" and Alaska "Russian Territory" (it would become part of the United States in 1867). Australia already bears its modern name (until 1829 it had been called New Holland) and its coasts are completely designed; Tasmania is listed as an island (Matthew Flinders circumnavigated it in 1798). The routes of Cook's various voyages are plotted; both the route followed by Biscoe in 1831 and the "Land of Enderby" which he discovered on the coast of Antarctica, south of Africa, are marked. Louis XVI Serinette in the Form of a Miniature Commode by Richard, Paris, 1775
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A very rare Louis XVI period serinette or bird organ in the form of a transitional style gilt bronze mounted and marquetry inlaid miniature commode in the manner of gilbert, by Robert Richard, Paris. With a label for ' RICHARD - maitre facteur d’orgues et mécanicien / Rue de richelieu à la bibliothèque Du Roy / Paris 1775'. This rare Serinette or Bird Organ has a wooden cylinder barrel mounted by twelve pins and linked to twelve sound pipes. A crank attached to the front panel controls the bellows that activates the mechanism. The exceptional marquetry inlaid case is in the form of a gilt bronze mounted transitional style miniature commode. The top of the commode is inlaid with a landscape scene with buildings, opening to an interior with an allegory of Love Conquering All, represented by two doves perching on a bow and quiver. The front of the commode depicts two obelisks centred by a Fine musical trophy and each side is inlaid with panels depicting the Medici Vase. The back of the commode is decorated with floral marquetry. A closely related Serinette dating from circa 1770, also in the form of a miniature commode, with the marquetry case stamped by the master marqueteur Leonard Boudin, is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. The term serinette is derived from serine, French for finch. The instrument worked like a small barrel organ with a barbed cylinder, wind box and lead pipes and produced a high, thin sound in imitation of birds. Other versions included a merline, which copied blackbirds and a turlutaine, which copied curlews. Used to teach caged birds to sing tunes, different barrels could be inserted to train different birds. It first appeared in France circa 1730 and became a popular drawing-room toy for fashionable women. An interesting painting commissioned in 1751 for Louis XV by Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin and now in the collection of the Louvre, depicts a refined lady seated in her salon playing a bird organ to encourage her bird to sing. Robert Richard Robert Richard was a Parisian organ and harpsichord maker and the mécanicien du roi to Louis XV and Louis XVI and was based in the Bibliothèque du Roi in rue de Richelieu. Initially working alongside the Cliquot family who acted as 'facteur d'orgue du Roi', he is recorded as building an organ for the church of Notre-Dame de Quebec, in Montreal in 1753 (destroyed in 1759) and as the inventor of a mechanical concert shown in an engraving by d'Eisen in 1769. Canon Jean Marie De La Corne described Robert Richard as : ''Le plus habile ouvrier de paris, fameux mechanitien et Homme de probité''. French, Dated 1775. Literature: Pierre Kjellberg, The French Furniture of the 17th century, The Editions of the Amateur, 2008 Count Francois de Salverte, Cabinetmakers of the 18th century, Editions of Art and History, 1934 Raymond Russell, Victoria and Albert Museum Catalogue of Musical Instruments, Volume I - Keyboard Instruments,(London, 1968; p. 69.) Page from "Gulistan" Illustrated in the Safavid Style
Located in Soquel, CA
Highly detailed Persian or Mughal era miniature painting from the book "Gulistan", depicting an outdoor court scene with three figures - the male figure is likely Sa'di, the author of the book. They are all seated, holding small cups. Behind them to the right is the exterior of a building, with an ornate entrance. To the left, there is a tree in a garden, with a landscape unfolding behind it. "Gulistan" ("The Flower Garden") is perhaps the most famous and influential piece of Persian literature, consisting of a collection of nearly six hundred poems and stories. The themes are broad but generally are structured around finding wisdom and beauty among flowers and plants. This page is from Chapter 2, Story 48.
