Count Gleichen’s Russian shell paperweight, the tooth shaped fragment of a Russian armament shell set above another of rectangular form both raised on a silver mount on an ebonized rectangular plinth, applied with a plaque reading ‘Two fragments of a Russian shell fired at Mr Fred Burne assist.t paymaster and Mr Henry Crave St John midshipman of H.M.S. Cumberland in Aug.t 1854 from Tsee Fort Bonarsund whilst conveying refreshments to the English camp – for their messmate – H.S.H. Prince Victor of Hohenlohe Midshipman landed with the Naval Brigade in 1854’. With a framed caricature of Count Gleichen inscribed Vanity Fair, London, July 5, 1884. The print has the following biography on the reverse and on the mount ‘His Serene Highness Prince Victor …. of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, is better known in England as Count Gleichen and as the Queen’s nephew. Born fifty years ago, he was sent to school at Dresden; but at the age of fourteen he conceived ideas not to be bounded within the confines of the small life of a German principality. So he ran away from school to go to sea, and his aunt the Queen of England, being informed of the fact, proposed to her sister to let her adventurous nephew become naturalised as an Englishman and enter the English Navy. This was accordingly done, and Prince Victor, as he was then called, was appointed to the Powerful on the Mediterranean Station, in 1848. He served in the Crimean War and in the operations in China he proved a popular officer and a good sailor-man, and was three times wounded in battle. In 1861 he married the daughter of Admiral Sir George Seymour, sister of the fifth Marquis of Hertford on which occasion it was that he put down his title of Prince and took up for future use that of Count. He became, in due course a Vice-Admiral, and in the meantime he also became a sculptor. It is in the latter art that he now mainly busies himself, and he has created many pleasing busts of his royal relatives and some works of greater pretensions than family portraits. Beautiful wafer lighter, created in London England by the luxury house of Asprey & Company Limited, back in the 1963. Crafted during the post-war period with a rectangular shape in solid .925/.999 sterling silver The lighted is embellished with an amazing engine turned guilloche decorations and is fully dismountable for servicing. Fitted on top with push semi automatic button. Excellent craftmanship depicting an odd and geometric shape, It is in perfect condition with no dents or previous restorations.
Weight: 43.50 Grams, (27.88 Dwt).
Measurements: 56 mm by 39 mm by 6.5 mm (2.20 x 1.53 x 0.26 Inches).
Hallmarks All parts are stamped with British crown marks, the lion head mark for the city of London, the maker's mark A&Co. Ltd. associated to Asprey, the mark for the assay of the .925 silver, the letter H for the years 1963-1964 and signed, "ASPREY LONDON MADE IN ENGLAND Y7 A&CO LTD H REGD No. 856727".
Asprey
The company was established in England in Mitcham, Surrey, in 1781. Founded as a silk printing business by William Asprey, it soon became a luxury emporium. In 1841, William Asprey's elder son Charles went into partnership with a stationer located on London's Bond Street. In 1847, the family broke with this partner and moved into 167 New Bond Street, the premises Asprey occupies today. From its central London location, Asprey advertised 'articles of exclusive design and high quality, whether for personal adornment or personal accompaniment and to endow with richness and beauty the table and homes of people of refinement and discernment.' An early specialty was dressing cases. Asprey crafted traditional cases and designs, mostly in leather, suitable for the new style of travel ushered in by railways. As the business grew, the company acquired manufacturing facilities and hired silversmith, goldsmith, jewelers and watchmakers. In the 1920's, commissions poured in from around the world, from American millionaire J. P. Morgan to potentates such as the Maharaja of Patiala, who commissioned a huge teak travelling trunk for each of his wives, in which each trunk was fitted with solid silver washing and bathing utensils with waterspouts of ornate tiger head and lined with blue velvet. This exceptional antique Edwardian sterling silver tobacco box has a plain circular rounded form.
The underside of this box has a subtly concave form proffering a comfortable fit in the majority of pockets.
The surface of this antique silver tobacco box is plain and unembellished.
This silver tobacco tin or box retains the original sprung flush hinged hallmarked subtly convex cover, which opens by applying gentle pressure to each side.
The interior of the box retains the original gilding.
This antique Edwardian piece is an exceptional example for its type.
Condition
This antique tobacco box is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The box has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition. Full hallmarks and part hallmarks struck to the interior of the box are all very clear.

J. B. Waring describes this oxidised silver Testimonial as follows: “The Manchester Art-Treasures Testimonial is surmounted by a figure of genius contending with an eagle, around which are allegorical figures of Painting, Sculpture and Industrial Art. On the columns are the rose, shamrock and thistle and the motto of the Exhibition, from Keats’ Hyperion – “a thing of beauty is a joy for ever”. On the vase are the names of the principal artists whose works adorned the Exhibition, and on the angles infantine figures of Fame hold portrait medallions of Michael Angelo, Titian and Cellini”. An exceptional, fine, and impressive, antique George V English sterling silver table lighter; an addition to our smoking related silverware collection.
This exceptional antique George V sterling silver table lighter has a circular rounded form onto a circular spreading foot.
The rounded surface of the body is plain and embellished to the upper plateau with the contemporary bright cut engraved crest depicting an eagle displayed perched on a plaque displaying '105'.
Either side of the body is fitted with cast sterling silver scrolling handles; one handle plateau features a push fit hallmarked cylindrical channel which allows access to the wick.
