Ettore Sottsass Mandarin Dining Set in Carrara Marble, Red & Black, 1986 Italy

About the Item

Icon of the Memphis Milano Movement. A set of four Ettore Sottsass Mandarin chairs for Knoll. Black Alcantara upholstery. Arms in red lacquer. Additionally, a Carrara marble round pedestal dining table attributed to Ettore Sottsass. A 1986 design by Ettore Sottsass for Knoll, the Mandarin chair consists of a flat rectangular seat cushion and flat rectangular seat back. Both with rounded corners and upholstered in black fabric. This angular core is wrapped in an unbroken cycle of colorfully lacquered tube steel that serves to bring structural and visual integrity to the arrangement, as well as serving as the armrests. Four legs are made from the same diameter tube steel lacquered in black. Unlike the armrests made from the same material, the legs are straight. However, they are not completely vertical, nor parallel to each other. The legs are slightly angled outwards such that they further apart from each other where they touch the ground and closer to each other where they connect to the underside of the seat. This set is in overall excellent vintage original condition with fewer marks than expected given the age and use. Provenance: acquired from an architect's office in Munich, where the long-practicing partners, who had acquired the chairs new from Knoll in 1988, were retiring their practice.
